1. Hi all, I’d like to step in and clarify things directly, as I can see some understandable confusion here. Bass Bags Ltd (the company) went into liquidation, but the Bass Bags brand, stock, and team were acquired by Strings Centre Ltd, which is now running the business. We are trading as Bass Bags (a Strings Centre brand) and continuing to serve musicians exactly as before. Like many UK retailers, we’ve faced tough trading conditions in recent years — Covid, Brexit, and wider global pressures (including the war in Ukraine) have all made it challenging. Closing Bass Bags Ltd was a restructuring step, but it has allowed us to protect the brand, keep the same team together, and continue looking after our customers. For me, Bass Bags has never just been a company name — it’s our team, a small family of people who share their expertise to make a living. We’re musicians and craftspeople ourselves, and we take things personally when it comes to our customers. That hasn’t changed, and it never will. To be absolutely clear: The same team is here looking after customers, just as we always have. No customer orders, hires, or repairs have been affected. We’re fully operational, continuing to support players across the UK and beyond. We’d always prefer people to pick up the phone and speak to us directly rather than speculate online — but I completely understand the concerns and wanted to set the record straight here. If anyone would like to talk to me directly, please feel free to get in touch: 📞 01332 840391 📧 [email protected] Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years. We remain committed to delivering the same reliable service that Bass Bags has been known for since the beginning. David (Bass Bags / Strings Centre Ltd)
2. They look like Jargar Mediums to me. David.
3. Thank you for the recommendations guys, it's appreciated. David.
4. The Flexocor Deluxe are a slightly brighter string than the Original Flexocor and they complement darker sounding basses well, both work well under the bow. If you want to try either type of Flexocor and you can get into us in Derby, we have both variants fitted and available to try on Eastman basses. Although this won't help you know how they will sound on your bass it will give you a feel for them.
5. One of my favourite books is "Looking at the Double Bass" by Raymond Elgar. 1967 "A reference dictionary of Double Bass makers of the world including the Italian makers with 160 illustrations of important bass instruments." A picture of the cover of our copy is here: https://www.bassbags.co.uk/looking-double-bass-raymond-elgar/ Good luck with your research and writing your book. David.
6. No problem at all, our van is fitted out internally to safely transport double basses and cellos just in their soft bags. Also, our driver knows double basses and how to handle them. This is because our normal deliveries are actually more like handovers with our hire customers needing advice, especially if they are just starting out on their DB adventure.
7. No problem, just give us a shout. If the buyer needs to know, we deliver/collect in the London area on Tuesdays.
8. If you can get the bass into us at Derby, we can deliver it into London on our van with our other weekly London DB and Cello deliveries/collections. We charge just £49 to deliver a bass in London plus congestion charge if applicable. Just give David or Richard a call on 01332 840391 to arrange.
9. The Westbury double bass case is the one that you want for your situation, as others have already said. The number of handles and their placement make it an excellent choice. Some dealers rename them as their brand of a case; this is a testament to the Westbury's quality. Endpin Damage: Most bass bags/cases zip up to the endpin. There are a couple of reasons for this: A, To prevent damage to the case and zip B, To make them easier to put on and off the bass. Most good cases including the Westbury have leather (or similar) sewn over the zip to prevent the zip being closed completely over the endpin. Cases with an offset zip and a hole for the endpin to poke through are a real pain to get on and off the bass. In this photo, you can see the zip stops sewn over the Westbury case zip. 10. We regularly fit 3/4 size DBs into customer's BMWs. The 3 series saloon is the tightest we've found, but still possible. The way to get a double bass into BMW saloon is as follows: Pull the front passenger seat as far forward as it will go. Wind the front passenger seat back down until it's level with the rear seat. You may want to remove the headrest. Pull the driver's seat as far forward as possible to give you space to position the bass Open the rear off side door and put the bass in scroll first towards the front passenger footwell. Return the driver's seat to driving position. The body of the bass should sit on the seat back and base of the front passenger seat without too much, if any, upward pressure on the neck/scroll. Just watch the endpin on the back of the rear seat as you move the bass into position. You can also put the seat belt over the bass carefully, to keep it from sliding about. With a 7 series the driver's seat bit may not be nessessary because of the cabin space vs a 3 series. Good luck.
11. Which string do you need?
12. We always keep Nyman's DB rosin in stock. http://bassbags.co.uk/product/nymans-double-bass-rosin/ Our standard shipping is two working days with Royal Mail.
13. Hi Cici's Mum, We're based in the Midlands (Derby) and we can hire you a quality double bass that is properly set up and the right size for your daughter, we can also recommend a tutor in your area. All the best, David.
14. Bow choice is a very individual thing and to choose the right bow you should always try a range of bows to find what suits you, before you buy.
15. The wooden Primavera DB bows are great beginner bows, we supply them with most of our hire DBs. Off the top of my head I think we sell them for about £69 so they are great value for money. As for the best rosin, you will need to use Nymans. David.
