Thanks. We didn't fancy driving across London on a friday evening so we took the train, hence instruments only. Rock 'n' Roll eh?
Trace GP7 mate. Really funny here. The first band just had a hissy fit at the SO and stormed off home during their SC.
That would be me. I think there is a drummer coming, along with Happy Jack who can now make it? Anyway, I'll stick it in the car regardless.
Sorry Paul. I couldn't remember and didn't have time to find your post. That's brilliant thank you! I'll bring the guitar then! And something for your trouble mate. See you tomorrow. Nigel -

Nik, I'll assume there's no drummer so I'll not bring the strat. Would you let the guy bringing the Fender guitar amp that he doesn't need to now. Thank you! Sorry this is late in the day, I've been blue arsed for the last few days and got to go to a gig now. I'll bring the Warwick Corvette $$ with DR Neons on instead. See you about 9am mate. Cheers. Nigel -
This may seem a little silly to you all but i've been thinking about this alot recently. Most of us i'm sure started out on a 4 string, I did and was quite happy for 12 years playing like that. Must admit I did buy a budget 8 string for a laugh at one point that was too much (see sig). Then just over a year ago I joined my current band and found for one or two songs I needed a low C# and B, typical. So went out and got a 5 string. When I go back to 4 now, it still feels natural and easy to find my way around but i feel not quite complete and slightly naked. I wouldn't want to do any sort of gig with only a 4 string now, yet I love playing my old 4 string basses still. Kind of felt like i've lost my roots abit here. Odd thing is with guitar. I play to an intermediate standard and dabbed in 7 strings but that did feel like too much and prefered less. Mind you trying to play slide guitar over that wide a neck is bloody hard lol. So my point is, is it bad to feel like your loosing your roots or is it just natural progression?
It's all about your vision old son. I can't stand more than four strings but I need 24 frets and I use a POD X3 LIVe. And I'd love a VB99 Bass Synth. It's when your musical situation demands change but you don't want it that the trouble begins.
I am selling a brand new Big Al 5 SSS if you want to upscale to five strings, its in mint conditions as are all my basses. you can see it here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...=STRK:MESELX:IT
It's not white and red is a horrible colour for a bass. BUT, that looks utterly magnificent! It's also the only bass that looks ace in red sparkle, especially with the maple board. Gorgeous!! (too many strings though ) Off your auction. Question & Answer Q: would you possbibly be interested in trading in towards a Ritter Roya 5string Fretless, brand new, plus cash? The bass is brand new. Did cost EUR 5970 and I would let it go for EUR 4995. I would be willing to accept the full price you paid originally for your bass. Let me know. My email: ******@web.de 17-Nov-10 A: No.
Pretty good PA - 4x Mackie SRM450 heads and 2x JBL subs. Not sure how much power was driving it. To be honest, I thought the sound guy pushed for a bit too much volume at the expense of vocal clarity, but maybe I'm just not a great fan of bleeding ears. Backline was a TE for Bass and Laney and Marshalls for guitars. I think the TE was a 715, if you could confirm that I'd appreciate it - I was impressed with it but forgot to note the model number.
Will get that model for you mate. I won't be using it mind Good they got Mackie SRMs. Cheers.
Loving this thread! Your '82 band rocks, Bilbo Today is another day, so here are another two (my last, as I dont think I have any more recordings of note). I've managed to find what I think is my earliest ever recording - aged around 13 or 14 I think. Recorded on a good ol' Tascam 4 track, I remember having a lot of fun flipping the tape for backwards vocals with delays and tinkering with pitchshifted guitars on my first (and cherished) multi effects pedal. Terrible singing and quite pretentious, but I still like it because when I hear it I can picture my messy teenage bedroom with wires draped everywhere for when I bounced down to my hi fi And here's a piece of dubstep I recorded last week on my iPhone, in a lovely little app called Music Studio. I had intended to write a longer piece for strings but when I tried out the synth patches they immediately brought back joyfull memories of Amiga game music...
India is lovely! Not too keen on Dubstep. Great for an iPhone app though. There's some great sounds on this thread! And some genuinely great composing. -
We played Babalou last friday - great little place. Can't make it this week though as we're playing the Hertford Corn Exchange. Have a great one!
Ah, excellent! Good PA for a 6 piece band? Thanks mate.
I'm going to get there for about 9am in order to set-up (assuming all that's OK with Hamster)... Clarky: that's great - really appreciate it.. Philw - sorry you can't be there but hope to see you next time! silddx - thanks Nig; still hoping I can find someone for part of it...
Let me know, Nik and I'll bring the guitar. If you can't I ought to let the guy who agreed to bring the fender combo know not to bother. Do you want me to get there a bit earlier to help you set up? N -

I'm still available for the tour, I've cleared my diary
Hehe Should be a very good night actually.
Hi Folks, Couple of urgent things: 1) Looks like my 2 available drummers have now both let me down for the day, so we won't be able to have a Jam Room which is a real shame.. Unless anyone knows a drummer who'd be interested in coming along for the day or part of the day? I could get a kit if that helps, so they'd only have to bring themselves... 2) As Happy Jack can't be with us (which is a real shame) perhaps the foyer area which doubled as the Quiet Room and the Workshop Area could be used for the Workshops and also include this idea from charic: "How about a small group of people say 5, each knowing their stuff in each area just available for a Q&A session?" I'm also looking for someone who'd be happy to take charge of the Raffle on the day? Cheers Nik
That's a damn shame Nik. The two I know are busy. I'll not bother bringing the Strat, but I will bring a Warwick Corvette. -
Things do move and evolve which is good, but sometimes there is something nice about just using a traditional method If a band is producing a kind of music which was originally created on a passive 4 string fender with 1 pick up position, what is wrong with doing just that now Evolution is good and exciting, but if you don't need 8 active pick ups, led lights etc to create your sound and image, then thats not being stuck in the past Nail guns are great, but sometimes a hammer is all that is needed
I'm really talking about decent hardware and ergonomics. Not all the fancy bollocks, or massive amounts of tonal options. Simply the usability angle. After all, it was designed as an alternative and evolution of the string bass. How traditional do you want to be?

I bought the album a couple of months ago. It's very good indeed, it's more progressive than a lot of the rubbish around at the moment that parades itself as "progressive". There's some great composition and playing, and Darran has a really good voice. The music has loads of personality. So, Dan, you are the young fella everyone's been mentioning Congratulations!
Well, not for me. I've spent a lot of time looking for an amp, cab and even cables suitable to me. Every part of my setup is a huge part of my sound, even the cables - Klotz Funkmasters. They DO sound different than others, especially with flats (I'm La Bella 760FL addict;) As for Fenders... well. A '62 P-bass was good enough for Jamerson so it's way more than good enough for me. I just like the fell of wider neck, whole ergonomy, punch and fat sound of passive Precision. I'm aware that my bass is overpriced (tonewise) but I payed for the sound, feel and visual look that makes me feel good everytime I have bass in my hands. Leo was a Genius. Precision, Jazz Bass, Stingray, G&Ls' are all milestones for bass players and bass builders from all over the world.
I never understand that attitude. It's like saying a diet of coconuts was good enough for Robinson Crusoe so it's good enough for me, or something. There is such a thing as progress, we musicians should embrace that and move forward. Leo's design has not evolved at all over fifty years, Fender are completely stuck in the past, and so are many of the musicians that play them.
After discovering the graceful active sound of the MM stingray, I've been yearning for something similar (interns of neck, and possible sound) however that at least looks different and is able to produce a wider range of sounds. I was stuck in a frame of mind of not wanting some from the same manufacturer. This was broken by playing a friend of a friends Big Al 4 SSS. I liked it when I first saw it last year but now I've played on one, I need it in my life. I think the only way they could be better is if they could have been manufactured between late 80s and early 90s so automatically come with the bigger bridges and Birdseye maple neck, or if they were roasted maple neck ( haha ) I've already emailed Mark at bass direct asking about them (really want a White one) and he says it's a matter of what they can get in. If I'm sensible ( :/ ) and sell my jaguar bass (in the for sale section, shameless plug) I can get it before christmas. I'm quite giddy with excitement. Thought I'd share the news with you guys.
Congratulations! It's the only bass MM make that looks good. I've read reviews and apparently it's a fantastic instrument! What colour? Has to be white really
OK, Glam Punk days from early 1996 and then a session I did over the summer for a friend so just a few months ago. Interestingly it's the same drummer & guitarist but a very different style. Both are just Fender Precision basses just DI'd
I really like the second number. With some sh*t hot production it has hit written all over it! -
Wow what a thread. I'll admit to getting a bit uninspired recently on BC (believe it or not) and not digging a lot of the threads. I'll check out some tunes a bit later when it's quieter at home. These 2 are mine. The first track is called Somebody's Fool and was written by our singer / guitarist who was 15 at the time. I was 18 and it was recorded on a Tascam 4 track in 1984. As it was the 80's there is a chorus laden slap bass solo before the guitar solo! The second track was recorded earlier last year for some of my students. It is self penned solo affair with 3 sections and some drum accompanyment to the 2nd & 3rd sections. It has some chordal work and was insipred by a Bach Cello Gavotte which was transcribed for bass by Rob Burns at the Basstech in Acton many years ago when I took private lessons.
I can't pretend I like either to be perfectly frank. The first is great though considering the ages involved, and the era The second is just something I can never get on with, cello transcribed for electric bass. Aside from the odd timing issue, you play it really well though. I just don't dig on solo bass so I'm not the right person to comment, sorry
