1.
I thought this might happen... let me make it clear icastle, Chris b, Xilddx, Roland Rock and anyone else who thinks I am pre-judging people based on their musical preferences, that I was referring to actual discussions I have had with players in the past, not members (to my knowledge) of this forum. I had heard their bands play and had listened and formed opinions of the relative merits of each player and what I thought their musical contribution was to the overall experience. Who among us doesn't do this when they see a band/ show? After the gig, stripping the gear down or whatever, the usual discussions would start up - "I liked the sound you were getting", "That's a lovely looking bass", "What's that pedal you're using?" etc. The bass scene was changing and some of the hot topics of the time were players like Pastorius, Stanley Clark, Louis Johnson - guys who were at that time pushing the envelope. I merely observe that in general, the more basic the player, the less likely they were to even recognise the skill and talent involved in guys like Jaco, let alone admit to liking their music. And when I say basic, I'm not talking about highly skilled individuals choosing to play a very simple and restrained part impeccably well- I'm talking about people who are learning their instrument in the best way possible - by going out and doing it- but maybe still have a way to go before they could claim mastery. We're all on a musical journey and some are further down the road than others. Some are down different roads entirely and that's good - there's room for us all. And this means there's room for Jaco and his like too. The bass world would be a grey, bland and colourless place if we all had to conform to strict guidelines and I for one am glad it's not. Hope that clears things up. Cheers Ed
Of course there's room for Jaco, no-one's suggesting there isn't. There's also room for people who don't like what he did. There are also plenty of non-musicians and 'basic' musicians who love his work. There are also 'complicated' musicians who like Paul Simonon. I just don't get all this crap about about having to have a certain skill level on a musical instrument to appreciate the virtuosos, it's totally wrong.
  2.
It's as well that we're all different, eh? I can never understand a lot of bass players' attitude to Jaco. I've spoken with a few over the years who don't like the music. don't like the tone, don't like the bass playing tunes up front etc. etc. All this from players who were themselves barely adequate in my opinion - was it jealousy? Or did they really just simply not understand the music? I suppose we are now so far away in time from Jaco's heyday that it's ancient history to a lot of younger players. So for those who weren't there at the time, I have to tell you that Jaco was a game changer. He took the humble bass guitar and turned it into something extraordinary and we had seen nothing like it. Don't forget that we had no internet, no mobile devices, no youtube - no warning. When I saw him with Weather Report in the late 70's I knew that the way I approach bass could never be the same again, simple as that. He was the most complete, rounded, musical bass player I ever expect to see and without a doubt, the bravest and most expressive. I guess the problem is that he didn't fit the mould then and he doesn't fit it again now. In an age when many players aspire to playing a Fender bass with flatwound strings which are mostly covered over with big chrome ashtrays, I can see that they won't like the totally "in yer face" sound of Jaco in full flight but hey - there's always time...tastes change and the cycle goes round again. :-) One of a kind and my greatest bass hero. Cheers Ed
Don't be dissing people's abilities because they don't like your favourite bass player. That's ridiculous. Barely adequate? Didn't understand the music? What bollocks. That's just competitive and arrogant. We all need a BA in music to appreciate Sibelius now do we? You'll be telling us you are eminently capable of playing and understanding all music and musical instruments shortly when we question you on your opinions of Weather Report? You must be an amazing musician and musicologist mate.
  3.
No worries, bud. I'm always happy to support fellow BC'ers, but in this instance I didn't need to try being helpful or encouraging - it's just a rollockingly good EP. The sort of music that used to make my job worthwhile when I was a music journo. Bask in the glory. Get out there and shout about it. And get your collective arses Northwards!
You're very kind, Paul, really appreciate it, mate. Cheers x
  4.
Bought! just wonderful, i bought the last EP a while ago having found it through your Signature, got a very nice Email from Kit and a personalised message on the CD sleeve. this one sounds even better! Please come up to Newcastle and play a gig, i promise to bring all my friends along! Matt
Matt, this is great to hear, thank you mate! I hope it brings you musical joy Thanks again x
  5. Done, and I really like the song too.
  6.
Is there anything like a definitive Pastorius song? One to make me go... ahhh, wow, yes, that's good. One with, well, you know, a tune. None of the ones here seem to be doing it -- and I don't mind a bit of fusion (though the less guitar the better). Did he write Birdland? I think he played on it, didn't he.
Portrait of Brian
  7.
Right… I've had a listen now. F-ing brilliant! Really. Trust is probably my 'stand out' track on the EP. If I heard it on the radio for the first time, I'd immediately want to to know who was behind it and would end up humming it all day. It's that good in my opinion. A beautifully crafted song; very striking and memorable; credible but also 'accessible' (? - struggling for the right word there). To put it another way: it's the sort of song I'd love to hear doing well in the charts - akin to the likes of Ellie Goulding, Laura Mvula and co. Not in terms of how it sounds, but because it represents what's great about good pop music. And I like good pop music The Settle, How to Breathe and Private Universe also great. Very clever - and in places very sad - lyrics that clearly have a lot of emotion and thought behind them. And Kit's voice is something else (Mrs Skol still thinks she sounds like a young Kate Bush - that's a compliment, of course!). The whole EP hangs together well and has a strong sense of identity. They're unmistakably 'Kit Richardson' tracks - not just in terms of that very distinctive vocal, but the instrumentation too. All tightly played and nothing fighting for attention. Although there's something about the bass sound… something strangely 'silky' about it!? Production-wise I can't offer much in the way of constructive criticism. The mix sounds great! Pro quality. I've only listened on cans so far - too late to play it loud tonight, but I'll enjoy doing so over the weekend. In short: I love it Nige. Hugely chuffed for you mate. I'd be astonishingly proud of something like this. Now get yourselves up North so I can experience it live!!
Bloody Nora! What a lovely, lovely review, Paul! Thank you! We were talking about Manchester and Nottingham so hopefully we'll get there before the year's out! The Settle is the only track with bass guitar on, glove silkiness The others are Kit's bass synth, it was easier and they are silky repetitive lines that benefit from that synthy vibe. I've replicated the pulse bass on PU with the POD, and Trust is much livelier on stage, I rock out on that one with a Chris Squire sort of tone. That's great you think the EP has identity, I'm delighted about that as the numbers are quite diverse. Kit is always deeply humbled by the KB comparisons mate, even though she's not an influence. Paul, thanks again mate, it's so lovely you like it so much. x

  9.
Personally, making music is important to me but it's far from an all-consuming passion. There are far too many other interesting things to do and experience in our short lifetimes. I couldn't possibly imagine only having one interest consuming most of my time.
I agree. I am consumed by music. But those who exclude all else are usually the ones making dull music with little or no life. You have to have a life, you have to be an observer of human behaviour, otherwise most of your music will have little relevance to anyone else. I do a lot of stuff and interested in a lot of things, but music is running through it all, even when I'm cooking or fishing.

  11.
You're joking, I'd have Fire Of Unknown Origin over CE any day, superb album.
I liked it in the day, but FoUO sounds pretty terrible to me now, whereas CE is a great album. Anyway, let's not derail this BOC thread
  12.
Simply 'alright'..? Some of the finest music this side of Schubert..? Not just because of Jaco, of course, but I'd love to hear 'better' than this, if it exists. Any recommendations..?
Bach is amazing too but his music doesn't touch me. It's nothing about 'better, or 'worse', this is music we're talking about. I adore Scott Thunes' and Tom Fowler's bass work, but hardly anyone knows who they are or would give a sh*t anyway because it's about context. The Jaco thing is a 'jazz problem'. I don't like most jazz and fusion so I find Jaco's context difficult, and I can't get on with his rancid tone, it's so harsh. I also prefer to hear the harmonic possibilities of the bass rather than the melodic, hence my love of Zappa, and Tom and Scott in particular. I also think some people buy into that troubled genius backstory too.

    Ebanol?
Just seen a post on talk bass about ebanol fretboards not sounding as good as wooden ones. Is this true? I can't see it having a huge effect. Obviously it's cheaper, but to a fretless newb surely it will be fine.
I had a Mighty Mite fretless neck with ebanol fretboard which I fitted to the body of a Precision Special. It was a superb neck, sounded ace. I doubt the ebanol had any real effect on the sound.
  16. I'd read a lot about him before hearing him. I was disappointed because I didn't like his tone or what he was playing. That was about 25 years ago, and my opinion is the same despite hearing loads more of him. Some of his work with Joni Mitchell was alright though.
  17.
I really enjoyed that! Had a listen on the Soundcloud link yesterday. The cover of Private Universe is a superb arrangement, and her own songs are really nice as well. Great stuff.
Thanks man!
  18.
I really enjoyed The Settle, great arrangement. Private Universe is an outstanding cover. In fact, I love them all. I wish you would get t'up north with some gigs, I'd love to see you live.
Cheers man, I'm probably going to organise some dates outside of London, the band are up for it. Nx
  19.

I had rather too much of that white last night mate
  20.
Excellent stuff, I still can't get over how lovely that Private Universe cover is, the contrasting dynamics are inspired considering the original is so.... homogenous. Here by Pavement would be a great song to hear given the same treatment, if you take requests . The Settle is lovely, although the lyrics are pretty depressing, but those harmonics before everyone comes in are a touch of class, good job.
Thanks Bob! I'll suggest Here, you never know Yeah, The Settle's words are dark, I love that song though. Thanks for the compliment re the harmonics, although they are fretted notes, my theory is poor but I think it's a tritone, G Bb G. The preceding swelled distorted chords are bass too. Thanks again mate, delighted you like the music
  21. Thought Blue Oyster Cult was what you meant, they haven't made a decent album since Cultosaurus Erectus. Anyway, had a listen to Boards of Canada just now because of this thread, and I find I'm a bit mesmeralized by it. I'd not heard them before. This is what I found on YT, the video really got me as well, seemed to fit beautifully even though it's done by a fan. Top stuff man.
  22.
No worries Nigel, just home from work. Glass of red and headphone time now. BTW, Kit's spelt your name wrong on the bandcamp page.
Apart from mine's white, I'm doing the same thing right now. Let's enjoy it together
  23. For me it's a compulsion, I don't have a choice. But there is also the vanity
  24.
Wow! Pretty cool song, I reckon! At the start, I kind of went "I've just decided I don't like her voice" which just threw a spanner in the works, because she's a really good singer, and i'm so unable to decide now whether I like it or not! Great song all the same, despite my inability to make up my mind on Kit's voice! I'll buy a download if I find a few bob
Cheers man, I have a friend who really doesn't like Kit's voice. Voices are such personal things, that's why we identify with them so much. I very much appreciate your openness mate, thanks
  25.
It's sh*t. No, you know i'm joking
