  1. I bought one as a cheap replacement of a broken Cog T16, it was alright... but didn't cut the mustard as a solo'd octave down oc2 type thing (I'd read several reviews to the contrary).  Can do some great octave stuff though, they're far more than just a standard octave pedal.

  2. How on earth do they put things like this out and make any sort of money?!  Surely they'd have to sell at massive volume for any sort of return... not that this matters to you of course! 😁  Congrats on what is hopefully bargain of the century, I hope it sounds great... but even if it doesn't, 10 quid!

  3. I've had a similar issue in store to be fair with an EBMM sterling 5.  It had been in the shop for a while, so they discounted it by around £300.  I snapped it up, foolishly without checking it properly.  Got it home to find the nut had been damaged and looked like it'd roughly filed.  Their distributer gave me a couple of sets of strings to make the issue go away which I accepted.

Then the phantom coil in the pick up stopped working, so every 1/3 times you plugged it in, series sounded thin, parallel sounded thinner, and single coil didn't exist.  Seemed to correct itself if you pushed the pick up until you got an audible click.  Had it sent for repair 2 times to come back unfixed.

Third time I told them I wanted the bass exchanged.  At this point, they couldn't honour my previous deal and would only give store credit. The bass I wanted was now out of budget and money I otherwise wouldn't have spent was tied up in store credit.  Ended up putting a bit more money down on a Sandberg, which I heavily modified to suite my needs before moving on at a fair sized loss.

The most I'll buy from PMT now are accessories and lower cost pedals.

  4. While my barefaced cab hasn't caught fire, I did have an issue with one of the cones sparking and causing a loud crackle when I used any sort of low frequency effect (oc2 etc). Contacted Alex who basically said I was wrong and it couldn't be. (I wasn't, it was.)

Took it to a local electronics wizard who found a break in one of the driver connectors; meaning only 1 cone had been working. Said it had to have been there from point of manufacture (bought this second hand), and as the low frequencies were physically vibrating the connector it was catching and causing an arc and the broken cable crackling. Emailed Alex to let him know the findings, but no response 🤷🏻‍♂️

Safe to say my next cab won't be a barefaced...

The opposite in fact, more than enough mids in the Legacy.

I'll definitely check them out in that case!  How does it compare to your Ashdown "heft" wise?  I'm not sure I completely believe in the A/B vs Class D thing, but after having a few class D I have reverted back to my 20 year old GK 1001RBII head.

Sounds beefy! I feel like the Acinonyx is very different from the more familiar Jazz/Precision/Stingray tones in most recordings, so it still feels a bit odd playing it live, but I'm sure I'll get over it! That's a great set btw!

Thanks, Lewis!  I feel the same way, although I do think that the respective pick ups to reach the same ball park as the standards (Neck: P, Bridge solo: Stingray, both parallel: all on Jazz).  I found I gravitated towards series mode though for this gig, but it was running through a fairly big PA.  Tomorrow I'm going to try both on parallel through my GK and barefaced rig and see how it goes.  I agree that it's taking some adjusting to though but I love mine.

Tempted to tuck that volume knob inside though, seems redundant with a mute button and doesn't half get in the way when I use a plectrum!

They are a brighter amp compared to say Ashdown and Ampeg.

    Inherently more mids too.

Was really interested in these when they came out, but don't GK amps usually have a baked in mid scoop?

Welcome to the short side! How do you find the Nordy on gigs?

Only gigged it the once upto now... It's frighteningly light though; I'm pretty active when I play and it nearly ended up over my shoulder on a few instances!  From what I could tell it sounded great out front, output seems a bit hot for my sovtek big muff but it's a work in progress!

Here's some ropey gopro footage, if you can hear anything from it

  9. Just realised I've accidently gone fully short scale!  Recently traded my Sandberg for a Nordy Acinonyx, which means my gigging line up is now an Ibanez EHB1005sms and the Cat bass!  I'm surprisingly happy about this, as they're both tremendously fun basses to play and incredibly lightweight!

It’s a very deep pedal and, to be honest, I felt pretty overwhelmed when beta testing it as there is just so much stuff it can do.

    Check out this guy’s patches:

    https://neuro.sourceaudio.net/?search=Gazza&scope=user&pedal=Ultrawave Bass

He has done a bit of work in replicating more “traditional” sounds.

If you dig into the editor, there are quite a few non-foldback options. I tended to get more pleasing results using single-band or a low number of bands when making patches but have to admit that it’s a pedal I haven’t really touched for quite some time as distortion is not something I use a lot of. It’s crazily capable but one needs to spend a chunk of time with it to fully plumb its depths.

Thanks for that! I did check out some of his patches, and they're really good but not quite what I was after. I spotted some darkglass patches that used foldback (I think, not sure how they've managed that) and they sounded great.

I think I'll have another look at it tonight before making the decision.

I've got a feeling I'll get the tremolo from my C4 with the tap tempo switch, which would be handy as it's to run my C4 through anyways.

Starting to feel like the aftershock that I sold to buy this was maybe a more suitable tool.

  11. At the risk of reviving a dead thread... My Ultrawave came today, and I don't get it! 🤯

I was looking for a tap tempo tremelo, along with a mastotron style fuzz and some more tradition drives and fuzzes that I could run parallel (for the occasional clubfoot cover).

Ive sussed out the tremelo, and there are a few mastotron patches in the neuro hub ( @Quatschmacher, yours in particular stood out! 👏) But the more traditional drives evade me! Everything seems built around the foldback stuff, which I'm just not a fan of. Very tempted to return, which isn't like me at all! What am I missing?!

Instead of using the amp's pre-amp, you're using the HX Stomp instead to shape your sound.

By plugging directly into the Effects Return, you are going straight into the Power Amp, so it is literally just the Master Volume (though you can control the level from the HX Stomp). I'd advise start with the HX Output set to about 9 o'clock, and turn the MV up from 0 til it's loud enough.

Running the POD Go into the Effects Return of an Ashdown MAG 300 combo, with the amp's MV at about 9 o'clock, and the PG output at around 9 o'clock, it's easily loud enough.

Sounds perfect!  Downloaded those Celestion IR's last night Opted to try the 4x10 option first, you get A LOT of options in there!  Some of them sound great but I'm struggling to get them to play nice with my synthy and parallel drive stuff.  Think I'll try the Pulse12s or 15s and see if there's much difference.

I still use my amp, but I route the POD Go through the Effects Return, rather than into the Pre-amp. Doesn't colour the sound quite as much as going through the Pre-amp.

That's my plan... my set up is a GK 1001RB-II into a Barefaced Big Twin II, which I believe is a pretty flat response cab so hopefully it comes through faithfully if I use the effects return.  I've never done this set up before though, does the input gain and pad impact or is it literally just the master output?

he's playing with things for his setup... the amp settings and the eq-block-cabs are great...
Also for ideas..... but he's not giving you plug and play... you have to backward engineer it the Yamaha bass out of it and work your sound in...

But it's free and full of ideas in a world where people seemingly will spend money on a set of presets for Helix it's possibly worth looking at it and spending some time. Forexample the amp settings are a better starting place than the preset ones line6 used!

That's very true. I can't get my head around people paying for presets;  IR responses fine, but not so much presets.  I did find his flat response amp settings beneficial.  I'll definitely have another look at it!

Have You tried Jon Willis’ eq block based cabs? Worth the time trying out to see if that gets you what you’re looking for…

Everyone has recommended the Dr Tone site to me.  Some of the EQ guides have been really helpful, but I've found most of the demo videos he's posted to be very mid scooped.  Maybe I'm approaching it wrong though for the amount of people who'd recommended it.

Yes, really pleased with the Celestion IR's. Bought the Pulse 4x10 & 2x10 pack, and you get quite a few different choices in that lot. Just a case of working through them all, and finding the one(s) that work best for you.

I'm hugely tempted... haven't played with it through my amp as yet though so not even sure if the IR will be needed, it's all new to me!  It was nice not having to take my amp to the last festival gig we did though.
