2. As a general rule, short scale basses tend to be more "thuddy" than long scale. If you like that (and I do) then that's great, but I've never yet owned a shortscale bass that actually sounded like a Precision. Certainly you'll need to put some effort into making a Mustang "growl". Could be your string choice, could be a smallish (say 15W) valve amp, could even be a pedal. Given that Mustangs are not exactly cheap, I suggest that you either try before you buy or buy a really cheap shortscale to try out first.
3. As with most everything else in life, it's horses for courses. I've seen compressors being used as effects pedals, as a general sound enhancer, and as a compensation for poor technique (that would be me then). They're versatile, but a compressor can only really do one of those things at a time. Ultimately it's down to your ears. If you can't hear the impact then that compressor or that setting is (literally) doing nothing for you. Others may make comments, and clearly they're hearing a difference, but can you? Pete just mentioned the Demeter Compulator. Some years ago that pedal was absolutely flavour of the month here on Basschat - lots of love for it, lots of praise. I spent two hours in Charlie Chandlers trying everything I could to hear that pedal's subtle, transparent effect. You know what's coming, don't you? It was so subtle and so transparent that I couldn't hear a damned thing. I left the shop with an MXR Dynacomp. These days I use The Warden pedal by Earthquaker Devices. Would I recommend it? To me, yes I would. To you, dunno - we've never met.
4. Does Darryl Jones count as an actual 'member' of the Rolling Stones?
5. Snap!
6. Crosby Stills Nash. The Monkees.
7.
For me, a lot of tiredness at gigs is caused by being tense because I don't know the set well enough.
Yup, that's a good call. In my early gigging days (not as long ago as you might think) I used to have to remind myself to breathe! I'd be so keyed up not to make mistakes and let the band down that I'd be playing with cramped fingers while holding my breath ...
8. 2" Rawlplugs ain't gonna do it ...
9. Yup. No short cuts available, just play more! If you're out of shape, be sure to do some basic warm up exercises first ... nothing too strenuous, just loosen the rusty muscles. http://youtu.be/bakDMyALGt0
10. Best ask MacDaddy of this parish - he's the one who keeps complaining about it ...
11. This ^ Also, are you testing using the same Speakon each time? A cable that hasn't properly"twisted home" and locked has caused me hours of aggravation in the past.
12. I always fancied Prof. Higgins's room from My Fair Lady ...
13. The only issue with my Hondo II Les Paul is the intonation from the 12th fret up on two strings. How's yours?
14. ... this Sunburst model has the rare distinction of being owned and played by The Who's master bass player John Entwistle. Unfortunately, a quick Google turns up literally dozens, perhaps hundreds, of images of The Who's master bass player playing Gibson Thunderbirds, not one of which is this bass. And since the advert itself fails to offer such an image, it's hard to see how even so reputable a dealer as NKR can make this provenance claim.
15. As soon as I joined Bassworld it shut down. As soon as I joined Basstalk it shut down. As soon as I joined Basschat it survived for over nine years (and counting). And they all lived happily ever after.
16. [Pedantry alert] Well tech-nically of course, if you can be heard then you're acoustic. [Pedantry alert off]
17.
The Wiki article doesn't really do justice to the glory/horror that it panto. It's a VERY British form of children's entertainment... these are some typical images (and yes, the male romantic lead IS a girl - ALWAYS!!!)
But if nothing else, this poster demonstrates the Panto's continuing obsession with ultra-obscure so-called "celebrities" who get to be described as "stars". Of the four "stars" listed here, I have quite genuinely never even heard.
18. A bass with a DIN plug ... God I hate midi.
19. Have to beat 'em off with a stick, me. No, not really.
20. IMHO you should always play at the volume that's appropriate for your location. The Junkyard Dogs rehearse in my converted (single) garage, so we play without a PA and set overall volume at the unamplified voice. If we were to rehearse in a large village hall or something then we'd rehearse at gig volume. Playing at full blast in a smallish rehearsal space is barking mad. Not only does it destroy your hearing but you can't actually hear what you're doing, spot the mistakes, improve the song. If that's not why you're rehearsing then what's the point?
21. "So what happened after the drummer spontaneously combusted?"
22.
I had to extract a punter from behind the kit on NYE last year, he couldn't see what the problem was. Lucky for him it was me that caught him and not the drummer....

Drum kits are magnets for idiots! You can read whatever you like into that
As a guitarist friend of mine likes to say, "drumming is just dancing, with things in the way".
23. Always ask, but hardly ever turns out to be a Basschatter - though most have at least heard of us. Truth is, there are only 17 real people on Basschat. The rest are either Bots or they're JTUK using multiple logins ...
24.
As far as what someone is willing to pay, if it's 210 then the chances are I don't feel safe taking decent expensive gear in ...
Don't understand this at all. I've never had any gear (of any value) damaged by the venue or by a punter, just whatever damage I've managed to inflict all by myself. If the value of your gear really is an issue, then the obvious solution is to take cheaper gear. I play a Mike Lull T5, but I also own a Tokai Thunderbird which cost me roughly 1/20th of what I paid for the Lull. I doubt if there's a single punter who would spot the difference. Hell, I sometimes wonder if even my own bandmates notice.
25.
Leave them in and you won't even hear the punters asking you anything.
Depends whether you're listening to Coldplay or Metallica, I guess.
