1.
Great watch. Is that Jason Bonham on drums?
Yes it is. There's a longer version on UT where he's introduced. Glad to see he wallops like his Pa!
2. Speaking as a relative newbie, i'd like to request a sixth finger or a bionic wrist implant. I also wish to voice a highly educated and considered response to a day of trying to learn Stuck In The Middle With You. (other songs are available) AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
3. I put this advert in Portsmouth student union:- 'Miserable old git bass player seeks position with young arrogant rock band.' I had no response. I never thought of trying Gumtree, I'll give it a go this weekend.
4.
Just to clarify , was this guy the original bass player you are standing in for , or your fellow substitute bass player? If not, then you should have stopped this chap mid -sentence and asked him who he was and why he had taken it upon himself to offer you this advice ? And then turn your back on him.
This was a total unknown. I guess i should go down the obnoxious route, it seems quite effective.
5.
So the OP should take it as a compliment on his personality, that he is regarded as unobnoxious by his would-be mentor.
In spite of my ex-wifes beliefs, I HAVE done something properly. Does being obnoxious mean i can get an amp that goes to 11?
6. If i wanted to hear this much aggro, i could have visited the ex-wife!
7. Welcome from another newbie. Oh s**t, i feel even older now!
8.
Whenever anyone asks me anything at a gig, I just point them towards our guitarist and say "he'll answer any of your questions" another tactic is to wear a t-shirt onstage with "I like you, I will kill you last" emblazoned across the front, that also keeps the armchair critics at bay
I think I'm off to the T-shirt shop at the weekend! So funny!
9.
Hey Stinky, don`t fret about it. Years ago I had a compound fracture and dislocation on my left pinky and thanks to the wonders of modern medicine, it is now almost completely useless. I don`t use it for fretting the neck at all and have always managed to get by. I think most of us have had these herberts and most of them seem to be bedroom players or people who aren`t in a band as they are useless or lack the social skills required to be in a band They are jealous as you are the one playing the gig and not them.
Thanks for that. I guess there's a lot of really great bedroom players that can't or won't play in a band. At least I can keep time with the kick drum, perhaps my new friend can't.
10. I spent a few years DJing in London hotels. The worst deal was a 30 day from month end. 90 days is a p**s take. I wonder if they would accept some compond interest on the outstanding amount.
11. Thanks for all the comments and reply suggestions. I like the angle of 'I'm playing and he isn't'. That's a great confidence builder. Tush was one of the first songs i ever learnt and one of the few i can play without looking. There's always going to be a fingering issue with my playing, i sustained ligament damage, to my left pinky, in a fight many many years ago and it won't stretch out sideways. My ring finger tends to cover middle and pinky. I did try and avoid him. He was a pleasant enough guy, but i think he saw me as his best mate for the evening. Altogether now. 'Me...and... my shaaaaaadow.' At the end of the evening, three things had occurred:- I was paid. I had a laugh. They shouted for more. I'm happy with that. Another disappointment was that i wasn't told to turn down. I must seriously adjust my atitude.
12.
Couldn't agree more. Excellent post.
+1
13. I'm speaking as a relative newbie to playing live here. A friends band recently lost their bass player for a couple of weeks due to illness. To cover existing gigs, me and another guy are stepping in to help out as we know most of the set between us. We played on Saturday night and it went quite well as we'd never played together before. However, after one of my spots, this 'expert' player decided to give me a lecture about economy of motion and correct fingering, citing the E string run-up in Tush. This wasn't a couple of comments, this was a university thesis standard verbal essay. He went on and on almost pushing me to a 'swift and to the point verbal retort'. Is it really that important to use the correct fingering? My left pinky isn't that useful anyway due to a mis-spent youth, and how would you deal with this sort of character?
14. Oh God, please don't start me off again. (Biting whole of fist) He is very skilled, but calling a track 'Arpeggio From Hell'? The guy is a walking cliche.
15. Or. Stupid Girl and Pretty Fly For A White Guy.
16. Anything with open strings, so I can do a lot of pointing.
17.
You'll not be 'liking' this, then...
Not even in the same league. Just a rich petulant w****r showing off.
18.
Richie Blackmore used to swap his strat for a cheapo woolworths special before sacrificing it on the alter of Rock 'N' Roll and the Marshall stacks he used to destroy were made of cardboard. It was all just pantomime for the teenage boys in the front row. I hope this bit of inside information has calmed you down.
Now that's interesting and something i didn't know. Thanks.
19. Anyone used these? I have a chance of joining an established band, it's a group of guys just looking to get on stage, dress up, goof-off and be generally silly. I'm considering these strings, green ones to clash with my purple bass and a black light to make them glow. They are pricey but do they last any length of time and how do they sound? Cheers. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180878636430?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
20.
Why don't you relax a bit, go and have a glass of milk and a sandwich or summat. The world can be a horrible place, there are much more important issues to die young of stress about. Boiling live animals to death for dinner so certain Chinese people can get a better boner, female genital mutilation in Africa, child abuse in Daventry, why Tom Daley's sexuality still has the power to shock some people, why many American states are fascist theocracies. Will that do?
Some valid points there, This is a feeling that has bothered me since i was 16, and i'm now very old. Still think i've missed something along the way.
21.
As a long-time fan of The Who, I shall do my best! If it is indeed correct to credit Pete Townshend as the first man to destroy his instrument onstage, it all began as an accident - they were playing in a club with a low ceiling, and in the middle of one song, he accidentally put the head through the ceiling. The guitar came back down, but the head didn't, so to save face he grabbed his 12-string and finished the song (and rest of the set) with that, as if he'd intended to do it all along. The audience, understandably, went insane. I think they freely admitted it was a bit of a gimmick to repeat this, but at the same time, The Who were always the angry group that appealed to angry mods. The (occasional) destruction of their gear evolved into a statement of that anger, even though it was really just a gimmick. If you watch those videos of Townshend and Moon laying into their gear from the '60s, Townshend clearly looks like he's letting off steam in the process. The problem is that the bands who've subsequently done it don't have that backstory or that connection. I've watched clips of Nirvana doing the same, and it just looks staged and stroppy. Particularly when you're filling up arenas, like Kiss, like Nirvana, like Green Day, it just looks like three or four rich kids smashing toys they can afford to replace. It has none of the same resonance.
Thanks for that. Hmm. I can get my head around The Who bit, i think. Being the first, i can understand a little artistic merit may be attatched, together with the youth anger of the time. After all, they did their best to connect with the audience of the day.
22. I wouldn't say it's an exageration, nor would i commit any violence of any sort. I was attempting to convey my feeling of 'blood boiling'. I can't understand the concept of the sensless waste of a musical instrument.
23. I really need to vent my spleen on this subject. I realise there are going to be vastly different outlooks on this and I'll do my best not to turn BC into a session with a shrink. When i see 'stars' wreck their guitars and gear, it really turns my stomach and makes me feel physically ill. My first recollection was when i went to see Rainbow at the old Southampton Gaumont. It was a great gig until Blackmore rammed his strat. into the speakers and went nuts, smashing it into as many bits as he could. I remember thinking what an arsehole. If he disliked his guitar so much, why not just give it to someone in the audience that would be grateful for it. Or a school! I never followed The Who, but they're a topic in themselves. I can think of load of bands and players that i've liked over the years, only to be put off by the on-stage antics. Kiss NIrvana Twisted Sister Motley Crue Greenday Foo Fighters Ygwie even Metallica. The drummer in Greenday for instance....not only does he kick his kit over, he uses the stands to make sure he splits all the shells so there's no way they can ever be played again. It makes me feel like smacking him in the face a few times. How many kids in the audience does he think would rather see the kit destroyed rather than have it given to them. I'm wondering wether its just a display of arrogance and the fact that they can afford to buy replacments. I realise that there is the chain of thought that a guitar/bass is just a lump of wood with some electrical bits or the fact that once you buy an instrument, its yours to do whatever you want with it. I guess i'm a little more 'romantic' for want of a better word. When a guitar is completed and turned on for the first time, it has life and becomes a living thing with a soul. That's my say on the matter, i'll be interested to see how this topic progresses. It's something that's troubled me for many years, pehaps one of you learned chaps or chapesses could explain it all to me.
