  1. Agree with this. He also figured out a way to mass produce instruments and make them affordable. There are many sociological arguments why this is a bad thing but without Mr Fender and Mr Ford music would never have been so accessible and so varied in such a short time span.
  2. Down on the corner - Creedence (CR)
  3. I get people don’t like the extravagant marketing flim flam but it’s no worse than all the marketing drivel that goes with expensive perfume or performance cars. Ceramic brakes, expensive custom paint jobs etc. I’m sure if Lewis Hamilton had the vehicle it may be worth the outlay but most punters wouldn’t have a clue.
  4. Wood is certainly expensive these days. Overall though Ash or Basswood are fairly reasonably priced. The top luthiers I suspect charge more for their time and experience than the materials used.
  5. Possibly all of the above. Some luthiers will also not rely on volume sales and will be motivated by the best they can build. Ultimately there is no universal truth and most of us will just all filter information to match what we already believe.
  6. Looks like he is giving a salute to Satan too. He’s a wild one that Whittaker.
  7. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
  8. Just to merge the two topics and play devils advocate. Is there a possibility that top luthiers are also artists and choose their materials according to their own tastes, experience and skill, including the wood as they know what they are trying to achieve. The audience are probably just teenage dorks and middle aged duffers talking twaddle on the internet?
  9. Can I kick it - A tribe called Quest
  10. Just like heaven- The Cure
  11. Problem is the high street is typically rammed with large chain stores who also don’t care, treat their indifferent staff like commodities and are hopelessly inefficient, have nothing in stock, take ages to order anything and can only deliver it on the only day your not available.
  12. True. When the next generation of engines were not so reliable I went Japanese. Buying something you know isn’t very good just to remain loyal to a brand is definitely cult like, irrational behaviour on that we agree.
  13. I went through a stage of only driving VW cars. I couldn’t care less about VW as a brand the decision was based purely on past experience. They were well made, reliable and not too expensive for parts and servicing. I don’t get the cult like fanboy approach but do get why people gravitate to the familiar if they have had positive previous experiences.
  14. I rarely play any of the records now but went to several memorable gigs that were a load of fun.
  15. I bought one from here a while back and love it. My only complaints are: 1) it’s just too pretty and feels like it wouldn’t take much punishment. 2) I’n used to the P bass shape and find the offset body is taking a bit of adjustment to get used to. Its a quality bass though and the neck is superb. For its price band, particularly used, it’s a lot of bass for not a lot of cash. The stock pups are fine but I have a set of Geezers that I had in another bass so replaced the stock pups with these. To me it’s a big improvement, but that may be more down to personal preference/familiarity.
  16. Can work well in Rockabilly/Psychobilly stuff though and visually can be good theatre with a DB.
  17. Interesting thanks. For me it sort of confirmed my thoughts that there are marginal differences with a very clean isolated instrument but nothing that can be differentiated once effects are used or in the mix.
  18. Summer Shadows - Martin Harley
  19. Start! - The Jam
  20. Night nurse - Gregory Isaacs
  21. Green and Grey - New Model Army
  22. Instant Karma! - Lennon
  23. Evil (is going on) - Howlin Wolf
  24. The whole of the moon - the waterboys
  25. I think there is a cultural context as well in terms of vintage clothing and vintage instruments being seen as desirable, whereas simply being “old” is just outdated.
