  1. The guitarist may be highly experienced with many gigs under his belt with the conference to improvise. If this is the case though I would hope he would be able to signal his changes to the rest of the band and have the maturity to guide the less experienced members so they were working with him and nailing the songs in rehearsal. I haven’t played in a band for a long time and when I was in one we were all equally inept so stuck rigidly to the structure. We were fairly rubbish but I saw plenty of local bands live who were technically more proficient than us but sucked live as they were doing exactly what your guitarist does. It was like watching 10 year olds in a local football tournament. 11 would be strikers all doing their own thing.
  2. Sir Psycho sexy/ RHCP
  3. The lion sleeps tonight- Tight fit sorry had to be done
  4. Baggy Trousers - Madness
  5. Generally I’m ambivalent about relic jobs BUT if ever there was a candidate for a sympathetic relic job that bass naked must be it. At a great price too.
  6. Loser - Beck
  7. Rattled by the rush - Pavement
  8. Or how delusional many guitarists and singers are. A band without a rock solid drummer and bassist are going nowhere.
  9. 1969 - Iggy and the Stooges
  10. Telephone call from Istanbul - Tom Waits Closest I can think of to Morocco
  11. Try a little tenderness - Otis Redding
  12. Sister luck - The black crowes
  13. A great guitarist is one that knows how to reign themselves in and not to dominate a song. Sounds like he is pretty immature to be honest. Maybe I am missing something but isn’t the point of a covers band to try and replicate the original song? There’s certainly room to put your interpretation out but I doubt the audience is going to put up with it being rewritten just so the guitarist can show off his bag of tricks.
  14. Never Enough- The Cure
  15. I don’t know anything - Mad Season
  16. Mine was definitely basswood. I did read reports of an odd composite wood though when researching buying it.
  17. Natural mystic - Bob Marley
  18. Dirty old town - The Pogues
  19. Mack the knife - King Kurt
  20. Across the universe - Laibach
  21. Misery is the river of the world - Tom Waits
  22. I’ve owned one. It’s in the Squire CV bracket in terms of quality IMO. Nice bass and £300 would be reasonable. Worth bearing in mind that a new G&L Tribute can be bagged for the same cash.
  23. You’ll never die in this town again - The kill devil hills
  24. Mercedes Benz - Janis Joplin
  25. Bands that share royalties seem to have far more longevity and remain friends with less acrimonious breakups and expensive court cases. The Cure, U2, The Strangers are a few I can think of. I think it’s important to recognise the individuals input in terms of what they contribute musically as well as off stage. Morrisey for example maybe a gifted lyricist but I can imagine him being an insufferable tw@t in real life. In the early life of a band I can’t imagine him going out of the way to build an audience by being approachable to fans or venue staff and promoters. Before any success comes these things really matter. In the case of The Doors Jim Morrison must have been a nightmare to work with towards the end but the band always seemed to work with him and remain supportive.
