1. Hi there, As I spend a lot of time on buses and trains travelling to gigs/rehearsals and waiting around at venues, I figure I should utilise this time and was wondering if anybody else has found handy excercises to improve their theory/general knowledge? Maybe not theory specific but just activities/excercises that can be done without an instrument or with just pen and paper. Cheers! Jack
2. He's coming into my University to do a masterclass next wednesday.. Can't wait!
3. Just a quick question.. Is it better to cut bass strings down when replacing them or wrap them lots? Or does it make bugger all difference?
4. I use to practice for an hour a day but I just got fed up when I saw no massive improvement. Finding transcriptions proved a headache too, I mean you can only really sight read a piece once.. After that you remember notes and you start to rely on memory
5.
iRealB if you are interested in jazz charts
I got an IPhone last week and this was my first purchase! Definitely worth it..
6. Paul taught me at BIMM Brighton. Lovely guy and great knowledge.. Recommended!
7. I suck at sight reading.. No matter how much I tried last year to get better at it I just didn't see any improvement. There was a glimour of hope using the Josquin Des Pres book - "Simplified Sightreading for Bass" - But it just doesnt seem to stick in my brain.. Any advice/tips on improving reading?
8. The Slide at the beginning of Ladies Night.. OOOF!
9. Something I always considered but I suppose its just more dexterity is required in the left hand (For just general playing..) The right hand for me has always been a question of stamina as its drawing on the arm muscles aswell I imagine. Good thought though, somebody at my Uni recently just learnt to play left-handed so he could be a more authentic Paul Mccartney in his Beatles Tribute Band.. Commitment!
10. I'd take the sub over a rockbass anyday.. I love some of the more high end warwick stuff but the Musicman Subs get more bang for your buck than A LOT of the other basses in the same price range..
11.
Great choice ! I have a transcription for that somewhere, I'll post it up if I can locate it.
That would be greatly appreciated!
12. Dissimilar but when I use a six string I constantly get people "Totally pointless, you don't need all those notes" To be honest I rarely use the higher notes you gain from the C string, I more often use it for ease and not having to jump up the fretboard.. Definitely true about falling into the trap of using B - Eb more often though.. I think it's just from usually playing the E as a top string and generally rooting around that position for E-Ab usually..
13. I can get four octaves in B or C out of my Cort. Six Strings and 24 frets.. Delightfully Unneccesary
14. Ah this is the transcription I have aswell. Thanks for the ammo!
15. Pino + Chris Dave on the Jose James track Trouble.. Filth. And the Live D'Angelo stuff with Chris Dave or Questlove. Groove City..
16. That'd be amazing man thanks. I'm currently looking for some Anthony Jackson stuff. Considering doing From Within as my exam piece for my Uni course.. Studying Latin so I've been hooked on Michel Camilo at the moment!
17. Recently acquired a six string and need to get use to playing it.. Can anyone think of any pieces which utilise these additional strings .. Solo pieces or just general songs would be great! Any with trancriptions would be even better.. Cheers!
18. It's the Latin Real book I'm looking for, I've got a copy of the normal real book in bass clef lying around somewhere..
