  1. I play a couple of Metro Express fives with my band - a J/J and a P/J.

Which begs the question, why do

I have a couple of more expensive four strings (MM Sabre & Klos Apollo) and a pair of very capable five strings (MM StingRay 5 and SKC Bogart 5) sitting at home?

Sometimes I think I need my head checked. But then again I've always sold basses if I need the money for something else.

My pre-EB Stingray was an 82/3 with a four bolt neck. It was a lovely bass in mint condition but at the time I owned it in the late '80's/early '90's the EBMM Stingrays I played in shops were overall better made with a a higher level of fit and finish. I distinctly remember thinking that at the time. I would have cheerfully done a direct swap.

Same for me. I had a black 1980 which I owned between 1989 and 1997 (swapped it for a Streamer Stage 1 but that's another story)

I remember ogling and hankering after the very svelte looking EB models at Rose Morris in Denmark Street, who I always thought carried a great selection of MM basses at that time. And again later when I moved back to SW Scotland at Sound Control and I remember marvelling at the woods and finishes on the EB basses. Then I bought a 1990 Sabre in 1994 and again the woods, fit and finish made me think my pre EB was a clunky old thing. Still loved it though until said Streamer Stage 1 appeared.

I use a Sterling 34HH and I tend to find myself using the middle three (of five) switch positions - that is 'outer coils only', both pickups, inner coils only' . The neck pick up is the one I use least - largely due to the style of music I play which doesn't need that deep and powerful tone. I'll use the bridge pick up on its own if I need to cut through.

I like my 34HH but I have to admit that the quality control wasn't the best - the 5 way selector switch was noisy out of the box and while it doesn't affect the tone when I'm playing, I would have expected better from what is the most expensive bass I own.

I owned both a Ray34HH and Ray35HH and I found the output drop on the in between positions 2 & 4 (both inner and both outer coils) made switching between those tones and positions 1, 3 and 5 almost impossible in a live band setting. The in between positions sounded great but almost impossible to keep a consistent output if switching settings. Shame really as both basses were otherwise really nice.

I didn't get this problem with a USA deluxe Fender Dimension HH 5. That was a great sounding bass and the inner and outer coil settings sounded terrific.

  4. I struggle to comprehend that this is actually my first Sandberg. Bought off here just recently-beautiful VS5 with capabilities that far exceed its relatively low price and single pickup. I'm hugely impressed and now a bit of a Sandberg convert🙂

  5. My Classic Sabre 😍

Gets me really close to a StingRay. Has the Lakland H+S mode and does the 'hollow' two pickup tone with the switch in the middle position. There's a lovely woody P bass mode tone on position 4 and lastly a nice fat warm neck humbucker on its own.

I prefer the 'Lakland' and 'P bass' inbetween settings on the Sabre 5 way compared to both inner and both outer coils settings on a StingRay HH.

  6. Bought Rick's Sandberg VS5 which is now my Sandberg VS5! Lovely instrument at a super price.

Rick was great to deal with throughout. Top fella and an absolute credit to Basschat.

Many thanks Rick for a really easy deal.

    All the best!

  7. I owned this bass for a couple of years (as well as owning no42 previously ) and they are great Super J basses.

Very rare here too - I can only think of nos 11, 42 (and possibly no 5 iirc) which I've seen for sale on BC and in the UK in the past 15 years or so. There could well have been others but I don't recall seeing them.

Would love to buy it back, but I'm not playing fours these days and I've overspent as usual. Seller is a top basschatter as well!

    GLWTS!

The M5-24 you had was a real thing of beauty! I think I would use VTC a lot, it makes a big difference I think. The Sadowsky preamp sound is one of my favourite bass sounds, I’ve got the preamp pedal which I use for passive basses to run straight into, and I find myself using VTC a lot there, but the best sound is with no VTC Ope /30-40% Bass & 30% Treble which is the best slap tone ever on a Jazz, and no VTC is needed I suppose.

Totally agree that the core tone of the Sadowsky pre amp is one of, if not my favourite bass tones.

And I find that I'm getting that tone off the MEs.

I did worry about the preamp being a little bit over bright even with the treble set at zero and how the lack of VTC would mean taming it from the amp head itself but I noticed that at volume it doesn't come across that way at all. In fact I was boosting the treble a bit.

What is always noticeable though is that big lovely fat but clear bottom end. It just works!
