  1. Hi!

Yes, I do have two Power Jazz Bass Special basses! I adore them. They are the kinda bass that would have to be prised from my rigor morticed hands, you know? I never really cared for the on-board electronics and thus I stripped the lot out and replaced them in true 80's style with a full active EMG circuit. They sound amazing. Interestingly, they actually both sound different - but lets not start the "tone wood" debate here too lol..

As for the Tri-Lam neck, yeah I never really cared for or bothered to chase up what was actually meant in the somewhat vague marketing literature. Being something not visible, I wondered if they had inserted rods in the neck like many brands do today to "stabilise" them. I've no idea, but these are two basses that I don't think I have ever adjusted the truss rods for since an initial set up, years ago. They are rock solid, the necks are amazing and they have a great sound. Gotoh OEM hardware too, if you can find a good example they will p*** over any modern Mexi - and I like some of those MIM basses too

Played their first album recently and it's excellent, it was a special edition with a bonus CD of covers and other band compositions, the covers are great including Pump It Up (Elvis Costello), Should I Stay Or Should I Go (The Clash), Unbelievable (EMF) & Hanging On The Telephone (Blondie), great band :D

    John 😎

Interestingly, and, you could say coincidentally, Skin covered Hangin' just after the band I played in supported them - and it was a strong track in our own set list. I forget the band, but a similar thing happened with our version of Message In A Bottle. lol. Myke Gray is on my Facebook, he's a hard working so-and-so that's for sure. He deserves to do well. Also known for Jagged Edge and current band Shades Of Gray.

    My amp tech, who's spent years as a player back in the day and works with some high end studio peeps, reports that class D amps are prone to shut-down if they're hit hard with spikey transients, {snip}

I know of one model that came out a many years ago where the fans on a batch had been wired with the wrong polarity, thus they didn't spin and were prone to shutting down due to overheating - and cheaper no-name models where insufficient heat sinking (and heatsink compound) were found to be used (a bit like the internals of my MacBook Pro as it happens - a known issue), but generally speaking, everything that has been built more recently, especially with the ICE modules have pretty resilient. I've owned many and reviewed even more and haven't suffered a shut down yet. Maybe user error can be factored in if kit is being taken to a service agent?

  4. I've a document somewhere that is a list of all the bass gear I've ever owned. The contents would fill a small museum I am sure. It's scary to think where this obsession has led me! (Other than having the pleasure of geeking out in three major bass mags each month lol)

I certainly don't want to be regularly trying to get it into the car. The neighbours are a reasonable distance away, but I suspect the missus might have something to say about me using it at home regularly (not that I'd be able to hear a word she was saying...)

But I do want a 7400 and an IBS 400... a Trace V8.. and A Trace V-type Preamp, an Ampeg SVP Pro, two Hartke 4.5XLs, an Ampeg 810, Bergantino HD212's, Barefaced Big Twin 2 (or a pair of BB2's) and ummm... a new back.

I did put that Marshall amp and cab up for sale a little while back (collection only!) or for trade for something (anything!) but didn't get any takers.

It's a shame really because I wish it would get some usage. It's just way beyond too heavy for me at the moment and I'll be sticking to the Helix and QSC K10.2 for the foreseeable. I might get a Barefaced with a lightweight head, but for home use the TE is superb.

Yes, I did look at it many times!

I wanted one of these when I was a teen. Had to settle for the Bass State B150 which was a hefty lump, but not the prestige DBS line!

Used to have one of these with a 2x10 extension cab.

Also until recently had a fantastic Trace 2x10.

My first proper amp was an 80s Peavey. It was knackered. It had weird dials for "pyramid" and other craziness. But it was "150 watts", 80s Peavey watts, and I'm fairly sure it was radioactive. I don't have any photos of it unfortunately.

I'd love to be playing a Marshall DBS set up, or a good old Peavey set up, but I don't have the skill to repair or maintain these things, sadly and I'm all about having the job done reliably. I'd be stressing too much if I thought something could go wrong with my amp or bass at a gig.

Love seeing these though, fantastic that they're still in use!

Yes! The same! I remember playing a hefty ole P bass (that I did ended up buying) through massive 7400 stack! (Gosh to think that P bass was only 400 quid back then) - the Marshall stack was of course a considerable amount more. I was obsessed with it, but I was actually very pleased with my (rather unfortunately named) Marshall IBS 200W head that I used for years. The cabinet I used was a secondhand 2x15 with Celestion speakers. Awww, maybe I should recreate that stack one day, it was lovely.

I have a 32Kg SVT 2 Pro on my shelf. I love it, it sounds incredible, but like @Bridgehouse, I can't imagine it will go out to many gigs these days!!

  8. Jon Shuker and I had talked years ago about putting a pickup underneath an extended ramp, but leaving a cutaway so the pickups(s) could be moved back and forth in the ramp, thus, no unsightly holes in the top of the body. (Yes, admittedly there are those who think ramps are ugly too and, I tend to agree when they're done badly!)

Many years ago, whilst I was still maybe a bit wet behind the ears, I discovered that rather than taking two speaker cabinets stacked, I could take just one, angled up to face my ears. These days, I have a little stand that cost about a tenner that I can pop cabinets on so they face my lug-oles.

Actually, scrub that. I've not used backline for ages, because, well.. IEMs.

Get an old omni reprters mic off ebay for £40

The problem comes when you buy blind and are unsure that the microphone elements can handle the SPL of a live environment. Even some unknown models that suggest being able to handle 120dB have fallen short in tests. I like the idea of at least using a couple of Behringer C2's. Cheap as chips and work.

  12. The H4n method means you can also place compression / limiting on each of the mic or audio feeds too. Your mix to your ears is also stereo.

fwiw I also use two condensers when necessary and a stereo IEM mix is available. Actually, I would rather set up my own external monitoring than have to ever go mono again. Eurgh.

p.s. I’d not recommend anything but decent condensers for ambience. SM57’s response couldn’t deliver the results I’d wish for, but even a pair of SE pencils will be brilliant. SE8 for example, but even a pair of  SE X1S mics.
