  2. I just brought a hofner verythin bass (contemporary series) and boy, am I impressed! The set up was dire from New (nothing new there) but after a serious going over it is absolutely sublime. It needed the string spacing at the bridge widening, the edges of the fingerbaord rolling, frets and fingerbaord polishing and a serious dose of lemon oil, the pickups lowering (more on this at the end) and the intonation, action and truss rod doing. However, this is what I would expect really and the bass, when finished, absolutely sings. If there are any hofner addicts out there a bit of a question. I would like to lower the humbuckers a bit more ideally, but they don't seem to be adjustable-is this correct or am I missing something? Cheers chaps.
  3. Just got some to try out. Great (all be it aggressive) sound, very clear and growley low mids and dynamic. Slap players will like then I think. Bloody expensive tho!let's see how well they last.

In real life no discernible difference. The body wood, neck thickness, paint thickness all play far more of an influence on sound than the finger board. How can you begin to compare two guitars with different finger board materials when every thing else is so changeable? In the vast majority of cases basses are made of natural materials-wood- which is by it's nature variable in weight, density, grain etc. I wouldn't worry about it and get the BASS that sounds/plays right as well as looking the nicest!

What I have done in the past was take the neck off, clamp to a cricket bat, string down the headstock so it's bent back somewhat (after loosening the truss rod) then gradually heat with a heat gun. If you're careful you don't mess up the lacquer- 4 years later it hasn't moved and plays as mint as it's going to!!
  7. Any ideas where I get a Badass 2 bridge saddle screw-you know, the intonation one with the spring! Pinged out at a gig a while ago and haven't replaced it yet!!!
  8. Can't stand them I'm afraid. They are wonderfully made, great looking furniture basses but the polar opposite of what I go for. Don't like the necks as a rule and really dislike the pickups (emc's or something??). However there is always an exception, and a fretless thumb or one of them jack Bruce sg thingys wouldn't be too bad!! Gimmi a good p bass or Ricky anyday tho! Does anyone else think this: old basses for fretted and modern (read Warwick) for fretless?

  11. Does this forum have a 'name and shame' venue/promoter list? May be helpful cos I have done some gigs for right (insert expletive/s of your choice here) and wouldn't want others to fall into the same trap.

  13. Get a danelectro! Seriously tho. A mate of mine had a similar thing. He used a short scale for a year and got a hell of a lot better.
  14. That range came out when I was working in a music shop and frankly embarrassed the Mexicans and slot of the japs. Awesome instruments and with pickup upgrades hmmmmmmmm!
  15. These are one of the best basses for the money imo. This jazz and the p bass (like pino's one) put a lot of fenders to shame. Bargain.

But the jist of my post is that really that vast majority of the audience couldn't care less what the bass sounds like at the level of valve vrs tranny.

  20. I play with the preamp just pushed, so you hit it hard and it breaks up a tad, but played softly it is smooth. That is the main thing for me with valve amps really-in real life (live) the difference between valves and ss is unimportant to 99.9% of the audience-they both thump, and they both sound low!! The whole valve vrs tranny thing only really matters to you yourself and other bassests. I ain't saying it's not important to take pride and pleasure in your sound, but sometimes it goes a bit anorak!! When I worked in the guitar shop the guys that really cared about the intricacies of their guitar/bass sound and spent ages and loads of cash 'searching for the sound' were ALWAYS the really ropey players!! The guys who just plugged into an amp and went for it were often the true, sh!t hot players. I'm a stout believer that a players sound comes from their fingers and how they hit the instrument-the rest is secondary. If you sound crap through a 20 quid practice amp then the Chances are you ain't going to sound much better through a 4 grand rig!!
  21. I had the Chinese 8x10, the plastic wheel cracked within a month of owning it (yank ones are rubber I believe). Bloody great cab though just a bit big for what I do now. Also didn't have the horn dial thingymablobsy, but that wasn't a major as live it makes f all difference anyway!

The USA stuff (what, 90's to early 00's) was the real ampeg, but now they are flogging Chinese built stuff FOR THE SAME PRICE! Now, nothing against China, that make some good kit but I don't expect to be paying USA prices for it. The cab I want would be a used USA one. Liking the look of the peavey stuff. Got me eye on a few cheepys to entertain me till I am loaded (yeah right!) Never heard of barefaced stuff so will have to have a ganders. Volume ain't really an issue enough on stage to hear it the rest'll be through a desk/front of house.
