1. Hi Pete, I'd just say, keep your eye on the For Sale section on this forum I've bought several items - incl 2 double basses!, a bass guitar, and an amp All the stuff has been great, and the BC'ers I've dealt with have been great nice people, honest and a pleasure to deal with As it happens (lol) I've got one for sale at the moment too Although it might be a bit out of that range, and I'm a bit of a trek from Manchester Good luck with your search Marc
2.
I rotate my basses almost religiously: every practice session I take a different one. I do the same for gigs, but a little less strictly. If I find that a bass no longer works for me in these situations, goes on the market, no matter what!
I like razze's approach - but I probably wouldn't be able to do this myself Which one I use depends partly on which band I'm playing in If you really like the sound of your cheap P bass copy, then keep it! There's often too much snobery involved in basses and guitars - as with many other things in life too, of course If it plays well, and sounds great, what more do you want? If you trade it for an expensive Fender, you may be a bit more "precious" with that - being more careful with it, re playing live etc So you may end up being less comfortable with it I've got a Squier P bass (admittedly, a 2 pickup version) and you know what? It sounds amazing, and it's the cheapest bass I have! I had a German Warwick Corvette, which was lovely, but there was too much fussing around with too many controls for my liking If you sell your P copy, you may find another one cheap enough in future, but you can't guarantee that it will sound & feel as good - it's luck of the draw As others have said, try some different strings on your Streamer But keep that P bass copy - if you like it - what does it matter what's on the headstock? If I had a comfy pair of cheap trainers, why would I trade them for a pair of Nike £100+ shoes that weren't so comfy?
3.
I think there might be something about the new music medium...ie MP3 downloads, iTunes etc etc. Kids now have access to 1000's of tunes all quite cheap if not totally free. So they load up there pod/phone whatever they have with all this stuff and hardly listen to a fraction of it. Where as when I were a kid, or at least a young teenager, I had very few records......
I think gadgie has a fair point here MP3's are relatively cheap, and many people will be able to get hold of them for nothing... As a lad, I had to save my pocket money to buy records I even had to take the long, 5+ mile walk home on several occasions ... because I couldn't resist buying another single, or LP in a sale Even when I started work, records were relatively quite expensive (certainly on my starting wages) - so i couldn't buy a fraction of what I wanted at the time Maybe we appreciate the music more if we had to save hard to buy it? Oddly enough, I can still recall where I bought quite a lot of my vinyl LPs and singles ..... saddo, I hear you say lol
4. Ah, we'll be converting you completely on this forum Papa J You'll be selling your guitars before you know it Welcome to the forum, and welcome to the low end of the music
5. Hi again, Not seen those Ibanez micro basses before Yes they do look sort of "cute" I'm generally a fan of Ibanez - they are usually well built Re the Kala U-bass, I had a very similar "Ashbory" mini bass It did indeed sound "big" and was really surprising, and quite a lot like DB to my ear However, I didn't get on too well with the spacing / intonation The tuning seemed to go out a lot too (though that may have been more to do with my brand new strings) I also didn't get on well with the very chunky rubber strings I found there wasn't enough space between them to play finger-style The E string also popped out sometimes too, when playing vigorously (ish) A 2nd hand Ashbory would set you back less than a Kala, and you might be taken aback at the sound you get from such a tiny instrument But it may take you some time to get used to playing one
6. Hi again, Did you get my last message re this bass, and payment etc? Cheers Marc
7. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 1 post to view.
8. Hi folks, Anyone know if there's a DB luthier who can supply me with a Centre Screw for a Strunal Tuner? One has dropped out of my David Gage bass, and apparently, the tuners are made by Strunal... Any ideas folks? Cheers
9. Replied Jas, It's yours pending the usual.... Cheers
10. Funnily enough, I rarely put the rest on the opposite side As you say, it does seem to get in the way I rarely venture too far up the neck Lol .... probably cos I love the rich, lower notes (well, that's my excuse) Someone else might find the rest useful, and not so cumbersome, of course.....
11.
........Somebody on a different thread here coined a wonderful phrase of "music for people who aren't interested in music,"
Oh, I do like that quote
12.
... who can forget that song that was playing when you met your first love, had your first drink, drove your first car, smoked your first joint, went to your first gig..?
Blimey, that was a busy night I'm not sure some of the chart music now will ever be listened to in the same way older music is replayed and replayed.... Some of it will survive, I think But perhaps as we become more of a disposable society, future generations will treat music the same way as an-other "commodity" My lad is 22, and he and all his pals are into 80's metal bands like Maiden & Metallica They listen to newer music, but all think of the 80's as some magical metal heavenly period.... Interesting question, and some interesting answers too.... BTW. I do like new stuff too My tastes have changed, and I like to think, moved and ebbed and flowed..... I do discover new stuff all the time, and look out for new, young bands at festivals (and there are plenty!) But I do go back to older stuff from time to time too... Some of which has dated, but some of which sounds as good as ever
13. PS. Last time I saw one of my heroes JJ Burnell, He still looked about 25! lol How does he do it? Or is it partly my eyesight these days? ..... don't get me started on that either
14. If your playing to an audience that cares about your age, you're playing the wrong venues! lol I started at about 20 years old, and gave up for over 20 years!! I regret ever having given up and started playing again around 6 years back OK - I'm much older, playing 2nd time around But I think I'm actually enjoying it more than ever As it happens, I recently started playing the double bass too .... so that didn't help my aching joints etc But on the plus side, my old valve head with 2x5 and 4x12 weighed two tonnes, and gave me 150W My rig is now a third of the size, a quarter of the weight, and gives me 500W PS. I've always been the oldest in every band I've been in, including current set-ups But I recently joined a folk band - and am now the youngest in that band ..... does it bother me? nah Some of my heroes of the bass are in their late 50's and 60's and do I think any less of them? Nope The important thing is, as even said - "You're enjoying your playing" and long may it continue sir Thanks for posting
15. Mine was a new Stagg But I think the shop had had it in stock for a while The rests seem easy enough to bend upwards or down and I tweaked it to a much more comfortable position I usually remove it for playing when sitting down, but that depends on whether I'm on the sofa, a chair, or a stool... It sounded beautiful on the big stage at Cambridge and I've been tempted to do some mods - but I'll leave it alone now PS. Some people seem to have had issues with the electrics on theirs, but in mine - I left it nearly a year before changing battery!
16. Just in case you don't see it I've advertised my Eastern European Laminate Double bass on here Sorry mods, if this is not the "done thing" I'll remove the post, if you like.... Anyhow, as others have said Eastern European Ply laminate basses are much better quality than the newer Chinese models I've seen a few Chinese laminates on ebay, with splits in the body joins, and the basses are apparently not that old! Let us know how you get on http://basschat.co.uk/topic/243458-for-sale-boosey-hawkes-artia-34-double-bass/page__fromsearch__1
17.
I bought one today! Initial impressions are good! Few issues though (as always) the rest on the right that leans against your side hurts my hip. I'm not sure if it's because it's in the wrong place or because I'm too boney but it starts hurting after a while. Also my shoulder really, really aches after about 2mins of playing. Again this could be me being a weakling or because I'm holding my arm too high or what. I've watched the Geoff Chalmers videos with his beginner tips and have adjusted the bass to where he says. In line with the eyebrow while leant against you etc. I don't know but I will stick at it! It's awesome!
Don't know if you've tried yet, but the rests are quite pliable You can bend them upwards & downwards fairly easily They do take a bit of getting used to.... But the Stagg is a nice enough, reasonably priced bit of kit which doesn't take too much room when folded up in the bag It was my first foray into DB, and it taught me a lot It also gave me some idea about playability of acoustic Db's too and made me more confident to try them out....
18. Hi there, I'm looking to trade up to a NS Design electric DB, so I'm selling my Stagg EUB I bought this bass at the Cambridge Folk Fest in 2012, and I'm so glad I did - because it's what got me started into the new venture of Upright bass! It was actually used in the festival, on stage 2, by Steve Tilston's bass player (hugh?) he signed a copy of his cd, and I'll chuck that in as well - as it sort of belongs with the bass A pal took some photos - but I still haven't seen the pics Lol! Anyhow, it's pretty much in mint condition - with no knocks or dings that I can see I never really gigged it - just took it along as spare, and it stayed in the bag I've strung it with Black Nylon Wrap strings - which sound great, and have a certain "dark" quality to them I've also got the steel strings it came with - if anyone wants to bow this bass Some of these seem to suffer with battery / electric type issues, but this one doesn't - recently realised I'd left the last battery in for almost a year! As I've mentioned, the bass comes with it's carry case, and both removable rests, as it did new. But I also bought the proper Stagg stand for the bass (which was about £60 with postage) - and the deal here, is I'll chuck that in for this price - so I don't want to sell the stand separately I'd rather not post this item, as I don't like posting instruments, and it's a tad more bulky when you include the stand.... So It's collection only, or I could arrange to meet / deliver for some petrol money I'm based in Cardiff handily, these basses come with an MP3 player socket, AND a separate headphone socket, which I found really handy Especially when learning, or playing late at night - it's virtually silent, so Mrs S couldn't complain Thanks for looking and these really are a great introduction to the world of DB, if you're thinking of giving DB a try It really is a little financial outlay - and you'd get your money back on one of these anyhow
19. Hi, For sale is my K&K transducer Double Bass pickup It produces a great, warm sound, and I was really happy with it, but my new DB came with a built-in pickup - so I use that I gather some people like to use a pre-amp with these but I honestly like the sound as-is, so I never tried it with one £55 plus P&P (we can work out preferred courier) or collection / meet I'm in North Cardiff
20. Hi there, For sale is my beautiful Boosey & Hawkes "Artia" 3/4 size Double Bass I bought it just a short while ago, from Sarah Thomas on this very forum I believe Sarah bought it a few years ago (for £1K) from a fellow basschat member though I can't find the original thread at the moment The bass DOESN'T come with stand or bow, but I have a rather nice "Theodore" padded gig-bag, which cost me around £60 - and I will chuck in as well... It dates, I believe from around 1980 and for an instrument of this age, it has a few knocks & dings - which is only to be expected However, none of these bumps have any effect on the playability or sound I have tried to picture the main ones, which are on the edges TBH - these look worse repairs in the photos than they actually are and there are no cracks or other concerns The fingerboard is ebony (not another dyed wood) and it looks and sounds beautiful At the moment, it is strung with Innovation Silver Slap strings which I really like. These are great for Pizz, but not so good for bowing However, I do have other options re strings - I will probably put the Innovation Honeys it came with, and I do have a set of steel strings that came with my Stagg - in case anyone specifically wants to bow the bass Not much else to say, other than I'm only selling because I bought a lovely David Gage bass from Greg on this forum, and I really can't keep 2 DB's I'll be sad to see this bass go - but she deserves to be played NB. These Eastern European DB's are not like the modern Chinese laminate Db's They really are high quality construction Though less lively than a solid carved bass - it's a loud, really warm sound EDIT: Sorry - forgot to add, I don't really want to post this So collection only - or I can meet somewhere within reasonable distance of Cardiff ALSO: I'm possibly looking for a trade for an NS Design EUB - with suitable cash adjustment...
21.
Can't wait to hear the Orange rig. I have the RIC.
And I can say that Gelfin's Rick is one of the very best I've played
22. Hi, do you still have this for sale? Did you get my PM? Cheers
23. Hi all, and thanks for organising this again Gelfin The last one was fab - but it would be nice to have more BC'ers there It's in my diary - so I hope nothing gets in the way in the meantime Not sure what kit I'll bring but it will probably include a double bass (again) or an EUB, maybe my electro-acoustic, and my MM Stingray (if I still have it.... lol) Marc
