That neck figuring is incredible!

The "cheap" one, but probably more expensive than the SUB was when new! They were effectively a US built Sterling, in that it was just a step down from a proper 'Ray.
Oh definitely, the modern SUBs aren’t far off the sticker price of a US SUB from yesteryear. I think they were ~£450 brand new? Obviously the reason they ended up killing the line in the end - too much bang for your buck!

Fair enough. No doubt the higher price USA ones have better finishes, hardware, etc.
However. Is the cheapest Ray4 bass good enough? Yes, it is…even unmodded…
Julia’s stuff is unreal. Such a talented player, with so much groove. Just shows that it’s how not what you play.
On topic, I’ve owned 2 USA SUBs, one had been a bit beaten by the time it got to me, and I preferred my brother’s modern SUB Ray (I.e. the “cheap” one). My second USA SUB is a keeper, and stands up to any bass I’ve ever played, but I’ve spent time monkeying with setup to get it just so.

Played one for a bit in GAK once, it was nice but didn’t scream “buy me” enough for me to leave with it.

just goes to show, one mans meat etc, I rate my Hondo, same model, see bottom of the previous page, I certainly wouldn't say it isn't a proper bass, I'm reasonable sure it was made at the Matsumoku factory and fitted with DiMarzio pick ups
I meant proper more in the sense that it belonged to me rather than being a loaner. I loved the Hondo at the time, it got me playing, and that convinced my parents that I was serious enough for them to chip in for the Yamaha. I didn’t know what I had at the time though, that much is for sure - with a bit of work and the knowledge I have now it would be killer…may have to give my cousin a call 😄

My first bass was a boot sale find from my uncle. He paid £30 for a Hondo II Professional bass, like the one below. It weighed a tonne, and the bridge saddles were sharp enough to sever a few E strings. I had it for about a year, before getting *my* first proper bass, a Yamaha RBX170 from Academy of Sound in Stoke (same uncle had driven me up there to do a tour of all the shops to find a bass, and my folks bought it for me for Christmas)
The Hondo was then passed around the family, first to my brother to get him started (he now plays guitar in a decent band, and has a music degree), then to my cousin. The Yamaha lives with my best mate in Manchester - he was the guitarist in my “main” high school band, and I have his teenage years Telecaster at my house.
After the Yamaha, I got my first Fender, bought used, completely blind on eBay without any pictures, which on reflection was a rookie move, which luckily paid off. I still have this one 17 years later.

Sold Tony an Ampeg preamp pedal and the transaction was smooth as can be. I wouldn’t hesitate to sell to, or buy from Tony in the future.

Another one for Wunjo. I’ve bought three (maybe four?) basses and a couple of amps from them and the experience has been consistently amazing. Good range of stock, no push, always happy for you to give stuff a try.
Similarly to an earlier poster they have looked after me when I’ve done trades, and once same-day couriered a bass to my house because the weather was naff and they wanted to save me a journey to the shop.
I mostly dealt with Laurence and Tom - if they’re still there, they’ll look after you.

Nothing to risk my 2022 clean sheet there. Winner.
🤣
I was cautiously watching for an ATK and found no such thing. Thankfully.

Looks like a nice little bass, and problematic given I have been half looking at short scales for space reasons.

Thanks everyone. Haven’t done the plugs dipped in glue trick before but seems like a no brainier.

I’m about to hang my basses on the wall for the first time - with much trepidation I might add - any tips from the experts here are very much welcome!

Keep the Yamaha. It seems to me that selling it would be more of a “one way door” than the Aerodyne, which are rare, but not prohibitively so.

Everyone needs at least a P, J and MM for starters
I think if I were starting from scratch this would be where I’d land. I’ve never owned or kept a J for more than a month but there are times where the sound would be just right. My newer PJ does a reasonable job though.-

SHOW US YOUR HOPPUSSSSSI’ve a feeling you and I would bond well with a PlayStation and Tony Hawk’s soundtrack 😂 great basses!
Here you go. This was a year ago when I recorded the first of what became many remote cover collaborations with friends of friends:
More recently I used it for a cover of Always, which is a HUGELY underrated Hoppus bassline:-

The Gold and Vintage series both look fun. The Lake Placid Blue/Gold Precision is tidy.
