just goes to show, one mans meat etc, I rate my Hondo, same model, see bottom of the previous page, I certainly wouldn't say it isn't a proper bass, I'm reasonable sure it was made at the Matsumoku  factory and fitted with DiMarzio pick ups

I meant proper more in the sense that it belonged to me rather than being a loaner. I loved the Hondo at the time, it got me playing, and that convinced my parents that I was serious enough for them to chip in for the Yamaha. I didn’t know what I had at the time though, that much is for sure - with a bit of work and the knowledge I have now it would be killer…may have to give my cousin a call 😄

  2. My first bass was a boot sale find from my uncle. He paid £30 for a Hondo II Professional bass, like the one below. It weighed a tonne, and the bridge saddles were sharp enough to sever a few E strings. I had it for about a year, before getting *my* first proper bass, a Yamaha RBX170 from Academy of Sound in Stoke (same uncle had driven me up there to do a tour of all the shops to find a bass, and my folks bought it for me for Christmas)

The Hondo was then passed around the family, first to my brother to get him started (he now plays guitar in a decent band, and has a music degree), then to my cousin. The Yamaha lives with my best mate in Manchester - he was the guitarist in my “main” high school band, and I have his teenage years Telecaster at my house.

After the Yamaha, I got my first Fender, bought used, completely blind on eBay without any pictures, which on reflection was a rookie move, which luckily paid off. I still have this one 17 years later.

  3. Another one for Wunjo. I’ve bought three (maybe four?) basses and a couple of amps from them and the experience has been consistently amazing. Good range of stock, no push, always happy for you to give stuff a try.

Similarly to an earlier poster they have looked after me when I’ve done trades, and once same-day couriered a bass to my house because the weather was naff and they wanted to save me a journey to the shop.

I mostly dealt with Laurence and Tom - if they’re still there, they’ll look after you.

  4. Is gone.

Bought on here in as-new condition, and it remains that way through chronic underuse on my part over the last year.

I’m just looking for what I paid. Happy to post (reckon a fiver will cover it) or you can come and collect from me in SE London (around Anerley)751967C2-CE2D-4547-839C-659AC7BEC27D.thumb.jpeg.07d2ea9fc392bb8a5e1663d4f9c39868.jpeg

Everyone needs at least a P, J and MM for starters

I think if I were starting from scratch this would be where I’d land. I’ve never owned or kept a J for more than a month but there are times where the sound would be just right. My newer PJ does a reasonable job though.

Here you go. This was a year ago when I recorded the first of what became many remote cover collaborations with friends of friends:

More recently I used it for a cover of Always, which is a HUGELY underrated Hoppus bassline:

  7. 4 basses, without a gig (other than YouTube/Instagram) which is maybe one too many. I feel it slightly more acutely with my 2 Mexican Deluxe Precisions which are pretty much identical basses made ten years apart.

The later model is the nicer bass on paper, but the earlier is/was my first ever Fender bought with my savings as a teenager so neither are going anywhere.

The other two, a Mark Hoppus signature (the bass that teenage me was really trying to save for, and literally irreplaceable without spending a fortune now) and a US MusicMan SUB bought in spring last year which is more often than not the first bass I pick up when I’m learning something new.

So too many, but nothing is going anywhere because there is no harm being done and they all get used. I’d love to buy more, but that feels excessive for my needs.

  8. I have two versions of the Deluxe Active P-Bass, one is the 9V preamp version which I bought as my first Fender back in 04/05. I also got the newer 18v preamp version more recently (2015 I think) Both are excellent, the newer model has a more modern flatter neck profile and an active/passive switch. Both great basses. The newest version of these (Player Plus series) has had a bit of a price hike so I would definitely scout the used market.

I do also own more than one shirt. Promise.
