1. I have never known a speaker that did not come out in the direction of the screws! I reckon that it was assembled before the paint on the cab was dry and it has literaly stuck in place. Can you get a screwdriver between the rim and the cab to split them apart?
2. Sounds like a job for epoxy or loctite (not superglue!) . Could you post some pictures for a better angle? Preferably with the brass part withdrawn from the bridge completely. The fact that you have one piece inside another piece means that something held it together in the first place.
3. The only thing wrong with the very old Yamaha TRB5 was the gloss neck. Since I got my brand new TRB1005 with a mat neck the difference is like chalk and cheese. I also notice a few bruses that I would like to loose. Any ideas about exactly what can be done and how much?
4. I can't believe it won't come out of the cab.
5. Pillar drill, sheets or rubber, clamps and 300lb mate to hold it steady. Job's a goodun.
6. Also, www.giggear.co.uk are in Hertford and have a site.
7. I need to mount an extra pot through the bass body. All of the others are resessed ( i.e counterbored) into the electrics bay. The pot has a 10 mm thread and the body of the pot needs 25mm. I will hand drill it with a big brace and bit, but what about the drill bit itself. What type do I need? There is the flat type which I often see used on chipboard, and there is the old fashioned spiral kind. The spiral ones are the type I associate with hand drills but I'm a metal worker, not a woodman. I just know that I need to cut a clean hole with a clean, flat bottom.
8. Sunday 4 Oct, 10PM. I'm from outside the M25 so public transport is useless. I don't mind walking (say) 1/2 mile, but with Ken monkeying with the fares, I'm not using the tubes!
9. Don't laugh, and it IS a contensious issue, but I own both the Beringer DI100 and the BSS AR133 (some say its the industry standard). They both sound the same and have the same functions and layout. In fact, I believe the DI100 won a Dutch radio industry award. The DI100 looks and feels like rubbish, and battery compartment is a piece of cr4p. Its apearance totally justifies its price tag of 1/3 of the price of the AR133 . The beautifully built AR133 has a tough paint job, and proper toggle switches ............, but switches break. I once used a AR133 where one of the cut switches killed the output completely! That said, the AP133 is rider friendly and pro crews respect it.
10.
I been using a mixer/headphones set-up when I'm trying to learn a bass part from a recording
ditto that. Bass podXT live. The only drawback is that phones tend to mess with the pitch on bass frequencies.. Some notes just dont sound right.
11. Not that I'm against mid range or expensive instruments (a pair of Yamaha TRBs and a 78 Precision), But also I'm a believer that's is HOW you play rather than what you play ON. So,,,,,,,,,, What is the best bass you know under £120 ($240). I suppose we should include 2nd hand here, since the scuffs don't always matter. Excluded are the one offs like: precision in a skip (it does happen).
12. If you've been whining about: you can never find a .......... "Find" means find, audition or make friends with, and have them join your band/project.
13. I can't wear what I get out of bed to a gig. It scares people. ....but this got me sacked once. I prefer neat/sharp. The punters can wear jeans if they want to.
14. I found a short a short course at Herts Uni called "A taste of world music" at the Hatfield site covering Brazilian, pans Indian stuff. Its performance based and need no prior skills. It starts on the 20th Sept and runs until Xmas. I don't know much more about it. I found it by accident. Its completely off the radar, and there is no web presence. but it sounds fun. Cost: £158 14 weeks [email protected] But I'd recommend that you call the faculty office, cos getting an email responce at this time of year is like getting a w*** out of the Pope! I would hire. I bought a 3.5m light pole for the first gig (for spots), and a projector for the second. I got no thanks from the band but It really sparkled up the show - then the band split and I'm stuck with it. What is your set list now?
16. I'm being asked to help form a new band. Apparently the singer sounds like George Michael. I'm trying to think up a setlist to go with that. Apart from "faith" (pretty obvious) what non-George songs would you suggest? I'd like to be playing more up tempo soul but I'm open to suggestions.
17.
This is spot on thanks (even the words for extra guidance!!) and I have the notation to get the phrasing right. Mucho midnight oil to get this right for a gig next week.
2 important thing about this song 1/ The audience only THINKS they know it. They won't notice as long as its in time and mostly in key. The bass line walks and changes throughout the song. 2/ Part of the fun is to screw with it anyway. I did it a couple of months ago for a charity gig. I guarantee you that: a) I couldn't hear it They couldn't hear it, c)They were looking at the singer's tits moondance youtube P.S. the singer couldn't hear herself either.
18. 1. Is a light bass cabinet important to you? Yes 2. Would you be interested in a smaller designed cabinet for maximum portability? Indifferent 3. What is the weight of your current rig now? 85Lb (combo) 4. Have you ever had portability issues with this cabinet before? No 5. Would a Neo speaker make the amplifier more appealing? No 6. Would you want casters on the amplifier for added portability? Yes 7. Would you want the input to be in the back? Yes 8. Would you want the Ohm rating to be 4? No My combo is 4ohm I would have liked the big/small rig choise depending on venue. 9. Would you want the power rating to be over 200 watts? Yes 10. Is a metal grille cover attractive on an amplifier? yes! Is this a design project? Are these the right questions? Is it right to design based on an average of opinions across many styles. Would'nt it be better to design for a specific sector Metal bands, blues, stadium egos, small covers etc.
19. You didn't list "Thumb only" as an option. Surly that's quite different from fingers.
20. They are the same one the Yamaha but when you work it out there's no reason it shouldn't be. Somone with more brains can tell us exactly what frequency high C and Low B are but:- If the bass control is (for the sake of arguement) under 250hz. mid - 1Khz, and top at 5Khz, what difference does 5 semitones higher or lower make?
21. Don't get me wrong, I know it quite well. However I just got a call from a covers band that is forming. I live just outside to the north. One guy lives in the east and 2 more in the south. They want to do 2-3 gigs a week. Now, I have a day job and I wonder how much of my time would be spent driving across town for a split of a £600 gig? Does anyone do this?
22. ...............and you know. YOU JUST KNOW. That if they became successful the bass player would be straight out and buy a 5 string, a fretless, upright, and a Miles Davis box set
23.
My best mate Dan lives with his uncle Simon Lebon from Duran Duran and he told me an interesting Bernard Edwards story recently. John Taylor, from Duran, was using Bernards stingray to do some recording recently. the bass is all origional, the same strings and everything that Bernard used. They sound really dead and pretty nasty if the truth be known, but there is a vibe about them which John liked. He went out of the studio for a min and came back - the engineer had put some new strings on the bass because he was finding them dead and so on. John went mental and said 'Where are the origionals' - the engineer had CUT THEM OFF and discarded them. John went mental again.
Presumptous on many levels: How dare he mess with ANY instrument without permission? How would he know what strings put on? What engineer doesn't know that many bassists leave their strings on? That's a famous bass. Who doesn't know that? I've recieved the Chic Budokan gig on DVD ( a month from Austrailia!). I ripped it straight the my PC so I can watch it in detail. He slaps, and plays fingerstyle as well as the "imaginary pick" thing. I didn't realise that he played down strokes AND upstrokes like that. I guess that the attack comes from the fingernail. All effortlessly played.
24. I just don't gig enough. I didn't gig enough when I was younger either. Now that I'm settled into a relationship, I'm wondering what "extras" I missed. Have you ever pulled at a gig? I mean just by being on stage? I got close a couple of times. Once in Hemel - except the band decided to hold a post gig jam. I turned around and she split. Once recently but ... spoken for. Last saw her in get-a-room mode in the alley with a singer. So what did I miss? (stories - points for detail!)
25. If you had to suggest one CD which summed up upright bass what would it be? Not necceseraly a famous bassist's album or the flashiest playing. Just examples of how UB fits ( or artisticly melts) into a band.
