  1. I had the pleasure of owning this bass and sold it to @BCH, who’s a gent.

Loving that an East preamp is now fitted to this bass, I have the same one in my StingRay and it’s just amazing. It’s designed to do the 2 band tone when the mid is at centre, and has a great mid sweep and usable treble boost.

Shame I’m not in a position to get this one back.

    GLWTS 👍

  2. Hello mate, I presume one of the reasons this thread is bare with responses is that, as you likely know, even similar/same model basses are so variable, including vintage and CS. The great Clive Brown once told me he felt  “some neck and bodies just aren’t meant to be together, it’s like the tone is vibrating in conflicting directions”.

Having owned and played a ton of 60s and CS basses, my feel is they all differ widely, and knowing which variable is the reason why is often guesswork… wood? Pick up winding amount especially on a vintage one? Amount it’s been played? Psychological? Etc. Strings are a factor too, but often the basses natural tone can vary widely beyond that.

For example, at one point I had 3 X 1966 P Basses in my living room and all were very different, even when strung the same.  Similar again when I bought a 64 P and compared it to 5 or 6 other similar aged basses in the shop. Also had same experiences with CS basses in shops and when comparing friends ones…

Played 2 Pinos I can remember, sounded like I’d expect a vintage vibed bass would sound, I liked them.

I now have a CS 64 Jazz which is great. It feels so similar to a real 64 Jazz I used to own, and not all CS basses do feel similar to a vintage one in my experience. I even prefer it to my old Bravewood, so it must be good. Tonally it sounds like what I’d expect a good vintage J to sound like - perhaps just missing years of vibrations through the wood if it’s a player, and you believe that’s a factor, which some respected folk do.

Anyway, that ramble is why I wouldn’t feel comfortable directly giving my thought/answer to the question 😊

Edit - forgot to say that for these reasons, I’ve always been open minded when comparing a CS to a vintage.

I've an idea Fender flats are re-badged D'Addarios (probably Chromes). They feel very similar and have the same coloured ball ends.

Pretty sure the ball end colours are different, even if just on one or two strings? I agree there are similarities, but quite different characteristics IMO.
Possibly a different type of D’Addario at best.

I went really light........43-100 on a P & Ric and then 43-106 on my SG.

Wow, never knew about the 43-106., curious as to what that gauge is like then… though think I’m too settled with the 43-100 to change, absolutely love them.

Aha, must be the short scale gauge for a shorty SG?

  5. I’m not a fan of high tension either, and do prefer the cleaner tone of a light Flatwound.
I like 40-95, which you can get with EB Group IV and Chromes, both similar-ish to Fender flats, personal preference but I prefer Group IV. GHS Precision flats come in 45-95 if you want a more old school sound. And of course Thomastik and LaBella do low tension, but won’t sound anything like the Fender flats.
Just highlighting strings I know well and use.

Last question before I start on this. What are the chances of there being two dead pick ups? As far as we know the bass was working properly last time it was used but unfortunately the original owner is no longer with us, I'm trying to get it working again for his sister.

Slim, but I think someone posted on here in the summer that heat had melted the pickup connections, IIRC.

You could wire them to the jack directly to check out if they are ok or not.

  7. Your Jack socket needs an earth and a live connected to it, looks like it’s not got an earth.
If you type ‘Jazz bass wiring’ into Google and do an image search then you’ll find a wiring diagram (can be a few ways to wire it) - or wait a while and no doubt a BC’er with more time will give you a more in depth answer!

  8. Light weight and very resonant 2006 model, weighs 8.75lb / 3.97kg.

Also comes with a WD matt black pickguard (plastic. simulated black anodized) in addition to the original gold anodized.

Sounds and plays great, punches well above its price point - not surprised as there’s much love for those out there. But my one in one out policy dictated by cash flow leads me to sell this. Frets are in great shape, neck is spot on, and all working and set up well. (Please note the rounds were put on for the photos and I had not yet spaced them on the vintage saddles yet, so the spacing may look odd!).

Has a paint chip in the body, under the side where your right arm might go (pictured). Also has a couple of little knocks on the neck behind the 1st fret - it’s not where my thumb goes when playing up there so I’ve never felt it, does anyones thumb go that high up?! (also pictured).

The neck is naturally nice and smooth for a gloss one (tons of use over the years), it’s balanced great and feels lovely and lively to play. Wearing a brand new set of nickel rounds - sounded amazing with the flats I had on when I was using it.

Collection only from Harrow HA1 please.

  9. This is a WD Music pickguard which came from the States.

It’s supposed to be ‘anodised simulated’ but looks more like a matt black as the brushed effect only comes out in certain light. It’s a single ply.

It was on my 50s Mex P Bass for a short while, has some minor scratches and signs of use. Will fit USA Fender 50s too.

    Postage included in price.

I was thinking of that very '55 when I wrote about the double PUP version Dan, yes that was lovely although at the time I didn't appreciate how lovely!

Funnily enough, and something I forgot to mention, is that the Precision Pro is sporting a pair of Fralins as well, never a bad thing!

If only we could them all, that 55 would have stayed for sure.

Yeah, I’m addicted to Fralin these days!

    Thanks Dan, small World mate!

Someone on TB suggested there's not many of these around as the result of so many people being really put off by their looks at first (and the promo shots by Fender managed to make it look pretty cheap). But I knew the moment I saw it that it was the bass I was looking for. In the context of my post about the Fender Custom Shop above it's a real custom shop instrument, that is, a bass I might have specified as custom build variant of a standard model if I could ever have afforded to do so with FCS (OK, I'll be honest and say that the ideal for me would have been a black '55 Precision albeit with the added bridge PUP, but frankly this is so close as to make no difference to me, although it's odd that the twin PUP SC Precision is not something I've seen from FCS, while I've seen a few with double mudbuckers).

I stand by a lot of what I said about the Fender Custom Shop above, many of the instruments I've owned or played haven't been of better quality as an instrument than their standard run USA models/MIJs, with many of the Custom Shop upgrades being cosmetic rather than structural/functional. But in this case I'll be more than happy if the quality is standard USA/MIJ with the added bonus of a custom PUP configuration.

    I'll keep y'all posted 👍

Remember that 55 black over sunburst you got from me? That was an incredible example of a CS bass, brilliant. I totally agree, there are some pretty average CS basses out there too, but the stand out ones do stand out.

Currently I’ve got a CS 64 Jazz and a great example of a Mexican 50s Precision with a Fralin pickup. The Mex is wonderful, and easily keeps up with the CS, and doesn’t make me want to get a CS P Bass (well, just yet anyway 😂). I bought the CS Jazz on a 0% card, and will see how I go before committing - it’s an excellent bass, can’t fault it, and feels reminiscent of an original 64 I used to own, though I can’t say it’s ‘worth’ the extra £ spent on a decent Mex 60s Jazz. But it’s fun to own right now, so there! 😝

@Ed_S you get the prize :)

I came very close to buying one a few years back when I was looking for a bass with twin singe coils (and was thinking of installing a pair of those Nordy SCs in Jazz Bass cases and install in a Jazz body, but I couldn't get the PUPs in the UK at the time so gave up). The bridge doesn't work for me so I'm going to find something a little more Fender.

It ticks a lot of the boxes I wanted ticked in an electric bass at present, bit of a gamble but c'est la via ......

    Good score Chris 👍

I have a tiny bit of history with this bass - I remember when one of the big stores had it new (GAK or Coda, or was it actually BD maybe? Can’t recall). It had a Pearl plate that made it look hideous so they couldn’t sell it and the price went down to an absolute steal, I was very tempted. I saw it sell again after and kept interested, then a very good mate bought it. He came over on Sunday, and I was keenly waiting to finally play it, but he reluctantly p/x’d it earlier in the week when he saw a bass he couldn’t refused. So I still haven’t bloody played it after stalking it for years!
He says it’s lovely - enjoy pal 😊
