I’ve thought about doing that as the laquer makes my fretting hand sweat, not sure if I will tho as I tend to like to keep things stock. An even smoothier smoothie indeed 😁

I felt the same, but some scratches I needed to get out kind of forced my hand though - game changer though, for me it’s way better, I’m chuffed.

Having heard great things about TIs I had them on my 70s P bass to replace the Steve Harris signature Rotos. Did not get on with them at all. I didn't like the sound or feel. I put them on my Ray and they did not last long there either. I'd like to put some decent flats on my Ray to see what the fuss is about but to me the Ray needs bright zingy rounds... I've used Chromes, Fender flats and EB flats that come in the blue packet all on other basses but never on the Ray, and there's nothing about those strings that makes me think they would work for me. Maybe I just need two Stingrays!

Funny seeing that quote of mine you quoted - I’ve gone right off Chromes, but they still sounded great when i put them on a Ray for a mate recently.

    TI’s are proper marmite.

2 Rays is logic, I got rounds on one and flats on the other. Just depends if that Ray & flats tone does it for you?

Having just acquired a Old Smoothie with flats I can now join in 😁

‘She’ arrived wearing EB Cobalts Flats which sounded lovely - very musical, lots of clear overtones. Not for me though as much higher tension than I’m used too and I could tell with much more playing time I’d end up with RSI. So I switched in a set of Dunlop Flats, which are my go to on my other basses, lower tension and plenty of top end when compared to most flats. With the lower tension I’m able to pluck at the bridge and bend/vibrato with much greater ease. Like an old pair of shoes.

Know exactly what you mean, love my Smoothie with flats, amazing tone. I settled on EB Group IV after trying a fair few other flats and gauges, still amazes me the difference the ‘right string for you’ can make.

BTW, smoothed off the lacquer on the back of the neck too, now it’s even smoothier 😂

  4. Original 2EQ Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay preamp, made in 2010 in the USA.

Still has the ends of the wires attached to the circuit, so that’ll make soldering easier if you’re not used to soldering onto the fragile circuit boards.

I can throw in some metal knobs if needed, but they are not original MM ones.

Just had an update from Jon. Things have progressed well since the last photo update. He’s going to send me some more images tomorrow. The neck is complete and the body has a little work to be done on the finish, but we’re almost there 😀.

    Did you get those pics?

  6. I suppose sometimes we just get the right fit early on, but experimenting and finding other loves takes us away for a while?

My full circle of going back to Stingrays as a first choice was really complete when I recently got back one I first bought 25 years ago! Still amazed and feeling blessed I got it back after making some tough choices 12 years ago.

  7. Bought new by me in Sept 2018. Good condition, well looked after, and just minor signs of use over 3 years - nothing nasty. The case has marks on the front from tight storage.

Weighs 8.64lbs (3.92kg).. Some of these go up to 9.5lbs or more, so this one is a good weight for a HH Special. Back in 2018 the bodies were listed as swamp ash, now it’s just ambiguously stated as ‘select hardwood’....

Has a neck to die for, is roasted maple and a great shape. The tones are plentiful with the HH and the new revoiced EQ which is incredibly versatile and useable across the full sweeps. This is far and beyond the most ergonomic Ray they have released, very comfy to hold.

No trades please, I’ve just cathartically sold 2 other high end instruments and am feeling like my bass chi is back to optimum 😁

  8. £100 collected. Postage extra at cost, only a one’er in my pocket will persuade me to sell 😉

My favourite pickups, I just don’t have a spare P Bass to install it in, and no plans to buy one.

    Regular version, not overwound.

  9. Reluctant sale forced by longstanding shoulder issues. Bought new by me in December 2019, very well looked after and nicely set up.

I used a sound hole tuner, which has left a small mark caused by reaction to the nitro - doh! It doesn’t look too bad (see pics), but I’ll include the tuner with the sale, very handy.

  10. I bought this for my wife to learn on when we first met. I think it’s best suited to a learner - very cheap and cheerful.

Smaller body than Dreadnought size, similar to a Martin 000 or OM.

Nice and easy action, and neck is fine.

Sound wise, well it’s a £50 guitar, so you know the score, I ain’t gonna lie..!

Fair condition, just some honest dings and scratches, but nothing nasty.

    Comes with basic carry case.

  11. Though a truss adjustment will affect the action, you’re best off setting the truss to how you want the neck, then adjusting the saddles. If the saddles are at the lowest, try a neck shim if you’re happy to go that route on a new bass - some people will, some won’t.

Most of all, are you sure the truss is actually working fine?

Yes, ordering directly from EBMM is a great option. Cuts out the middle men and their markup. Ok, £2.9k is still a lot of money but it is a unique model with some cool features and a "normal" Stingray Special nowadays costs pretty much the same, at least here in the UK (depending on the finish of course. For example, the smoked chrome costs £2.9k at Andertons, the Amethyst Sparkle costs £3k at BD but the Speed Blue and Burnt Ends "only" cost £2.75k at Andertons.)

Those prices contribute to why I just withdrew my Special from the market place today - it’s a great bass that I bought new in ‘18 so I might as well keep hold now for a rainy day, as for me a new one has got well out of reach.

Good score on the TC, love that it’s passive and hope you do a NBD 👍

  13. I’m on a bass cull, and it just occurred to me the 3 I’m keeping were all once sold and then bought back my me. One was sold during a rough period, one best described as sold to fund a family emergency, and one because I was buying back an old vintage bass (the irony) but got that decision wrong.

Best of the bunch to get back is the ‘95 Ray I grew up on, found again about 12 years after I sold it during a tough time.

2 came back from the bassist I sold them to, my beloved ‘95 Ray after years of failed emails and eBay searching, finally saw it on eBay and pounced.

    What are your tales?
