Thinking of getting some  J shape pickups, but with some specific requirements

I hate single coil hum, who doesn't, so do they need to be humbucking ?

Not looking for  trad single coil Fender J sound either.  I'd like subdued highs , as glassy brittle treble is not my thang.  Smoother midrange,  smoother low end.  I believe  ( rightly or wrongly ) that its easier to add growly mids with onboard / amp EQ to a smooth pickup, than to clean up a growly pickup.

I have an onboard preamp,  so would passives overload the input when combined with the onboard pre ?  Or does it not matter , just turn down the amp gain if there's too much input ?

Having said all that, what choices are there for me - recommend some names if you can.

    Cheers !

Emg pickups are your friend here active or passive doesn't really matter if your running a preamp personality I would go with active pickups

Thanks Woodinblack and Tbird……I’ve yet to get around to opening up the wiring but hopefully it will be repairable on the main board….

Also, the mid doesn’t sound flat or boosted and there is no difference in mid, turned to full mid or full ‘off’ so perhaps the mid signal isn’t getting routed to that pot.

Maybe the pot is shot I hope you can sort it out mate

  4. Got a set of emg pickups on order for my Mustang bass and my question is can I cut the emg quick connection cables and solder to a normal 3 way toggle switch or do I need to buy the correct emg quick connect switch thanks in advance

Yes, ibanez wiring can seem a bit excessive as they have one wire per every connection, so 3 for each of the volume, bass, treble, mid, power and jack, normally in one strip along the side in quite a large connector. So when you say the mid is not working, does it sound like it is just flat or cut or boosted?

Not had too much trouble with ibanez boards and the wiring is normally robust (or maybe over robust), but worth checking out the cables. The wiring diagram for the generic 3 band EQ is somewhere on one of the ibanez threads on here.

Very good advice I've done a few ibanez repairs and it's either been a dry joint on the board or a knackered pot but I reckon your pot should be OK as they generally just don't die without prior symptoms

  6. I like the tinkering I've lost money on basses but hey it was fun

My 3 basses now just have electronics pickups etc changed to my personal tastes oh and hi mass bridges but they are my keepers I've thought about upgrading tuners but they work and hold tune so it would be a stupid thing to do as just a waste of time and money imo

If we agree that describing something as 'gay' has a pejorative connotation (which I believe it has), then describing something as 'girly' is in the same category. At least in the eyes of this particular woman.

At the same time, this particular woman knows that many famous people deliberately try to shock or at least be controversial because it gets them talked about and clicked on. So ther're usually best ignored, unless what they say is seriously outrageous.

Gay was always a reference to a homosexual or happy mood but now it seems to mean several things for the younger generation as do many words nowadays

NME Reports that Adam Clayton has been criticised for comments he made about the bass in a Phil Lynot doc.

Clayton: One thing you need to know about the bass is it’s that big, heavy thing that hangs down between your legs

Clayton: The bass is this secret weapon. It’s where the power comes from. It looks in a groove with the drum kit – the drums and the bass gives you that nice, kind of sexy wiggle of the hips. And then all the other kind of girly stuff sits on top, but we are the men of the band

Indie artist Nadine Shah responded: “Adam Clayton is a f***ing spenk. My ‘girly stuff’ 5h1ts on what you do.”

Can't seem to get a link to the NME page.

But he's still a multi millionaire and I've never heard of her

Don't see anything sexist in his comments I'm sure they were light hearted

I'm not even a Clayton or u2 fan
