  1. I've always loved this little gem in the Deep Purple catalogue: Black night is not right I don't feel so bright I don't care to sit tight Maybe I'll find on the way down the line That I'm free, free to be me Black night is a long way from home I don't need a dark tree I don't want a rough sea I can't feel, I can't see Maybe I'll find on the way down the line That I'm free, free to be me Black night is a long way from home Black night, black night I don't need black night I can't see dark light Maybe I'll find on the way down the line That I'm free, free to be me Black night is a long way from home
  2. So my copy arrived as well. In time for my birthday, even!! At roughly £22,it is quite the steal, although I would not have minded the original price of £15 🙂 I've put it aside for now, and intend to peruse it one page at a time. The additional weight lifting exercises that come with this, are an added bonus 😄
  3. Right, so we recently played in someone's kitchen (not kidding) and the bloke who owns said kitchen recorded the gig. Keeping in mind the earlier comments, I would once again like (...) some feedback on my latest effort. https://soundcloud.com/drdiddley/dr-diddley-genk-teaser Just like before, be honest but please try to be civil about it 🙂 I am trying to learn from all your feedback. Hope it shows at least a wee bit...
  4. Damn you, RichardH ! I just went and reordered a copy 🙂
  5. I will always state Uriah Heep as my favourite band, yet I do not listen to them that often. Mostly cos I know all of the repertoire up until Wake The Sleeper by heart. The later albums are still brilliant, but I am getting older 😁 Some albums I always come back to: # Joss Stone: Soul Sessions 2 # Warren Haynes: Ashes & Dust # Skyclad: The Answer Machine? # Joss Stone: Water For Your Soul # Anouk: Get Her Together Any of these will inevitably lead to weeks and weeks of repeat play in the car, usually twice a day (1 hour commute 1 way).
  6. The worst part is, I didn't really want it but at that price I couldn't resist ordering. And now that I can't have it, I want one!!!
  7. Makes me wonder why I do not get a single mail... Time to check if Amazon cancelled my order for me. Not that I wanted this book per se, but still... 🙂
  8. Whilst I would advise reading up on it first, I would definitely recommend anyone to buy an ukulele. My first was a sopranobut I prefer a concert size. Thinking of getting a tenor soon.
  9. Years ago, I ordered an NS design WAV on a whim. I figured since I played in a rockabilly-ish band, this would be a good fit. Took me quite a while to actually sound like I knew what I was doing, but I loved it. These days I hardly play EUB, whether at home or on a gig, so she just stands there. I told my misses I might sell the EUB but she told me to just keep it. My current blues band has a living room concert coming up soon, so perhaps I will give er a go. At no point have I gassed for an actual upright, nor do I consider myself an upright player. I play EUB, which really is a different instrument.
  10. I just spent about an hour getting the bass line down for Jace Everett's Bad Things. Don't have all the details but more than enough to actually get all the different parts as opposed to faking just the main riffs. So I texted the guitarist and told him that he's free to do whatever, provided he respects the number of measures 😄
  11. Damn that Jake is no slouch!! Thanks, guys. Will also check out James Hill, the name sounds familiar...
  12. No problem, and while I admit your post gave me food for thought, it WAS what I asked for and it was definitely done in a more than constructive manner Thanks, we have been thinking of adding backing vocals. I could easily do it - in the mechanical sense that I can sing and play bass at the same time. I'm just not a good singer As for the nasal bass, well it's a fretless and I do quite like this particular bass' tone. Having said that, I will revisit its sound, to hear if I agree or not To be fair, I do not feel like there was any dog-piling taking place. I will admit that I would have preferred heaps of praise but in fairness, I have my mom for that This gives me things to ponder, about the band as a whole, myself in particular and my Audacity-editing skills for this sort of intentions. So yeah, I think this thread is working pretty well for me!
  13. No worries! My initial response was equally ehm, civil I am well aware of this particular drummer - I played with him in a different project for about 7 or 8 years. Like I said, I am aware of everyone's shortcomings, including mine. People who do come out to watch us ( ) all say they are entertained and we should play more / longer. In fact the crew who recorded the Durango Sessions (which was our first live outing) said, and I quote: "With a sound like this, you'll have no trouble getting gigs". They even asked us back for another recording session later in the year But as masochistic as it may appear, I am happy with feedback such as given in this thread - it helps me stay focused on areas to improve, rather than get into a collective-high-five mode that every band inevitably falls into once they start gigging and getting positive feedback (from friends and family )
  14. @bazzbass, this is actually more constructive and less insulting (in my view) than your first remark So thanks, I really do appreciate it!
  15. Shame she didn't update it to a 2.0 version to include forum posts. At least the others are offering something constructive here
  16. Hi Dad3353, that is some tough love indeed! But I posted here, looking for feedback, so no complaints. I should have clarified, the Eindhoven teaser is recorded with a Zoom which was positioned in the room - not taken from the board mix. The Durango Session was taken directly from the mixing console, so different end result. As for the actual performances, again thanks for the feedback - I am aware of our shortcomings Will listen back with a more critical ear to my own performance, and see where I can improve
  17. Hi everyone, For my current band, I have decided on a new-to-me approach for live recordings. Rather than ask people and venues to listen to full tracks, I generate "teasers" with cross-fades. This allows me to highlight different tracks in what I hope is an enjoyable listening experience. Feel free to comment on the approach in general, and in particular - the tracks called "Live In Eindhoven teaser" and "Durango Sessions" were treated as described above.
  18. I hear ya. Once quit a band because they wanted to play Uriah Heep's Easy Livin without the twiddley part in the chorus. Well, that and they couldn't pull off ZZ Top's Tush...
  19. As promised, here is an audio teaser. Recorded live, warts 'n all. https://soundcloud.com/drdiddley/dr-diddley-live-in-eindhoven-teaser Feedback welcome!
  20. Based on this thread, I went and had a look at the local Belgian/Dutch retailers. Found EUR 50 to be too much, so I went to Amazon UK, and with delivery and conversion rate included, this £15.02 will amount to about EUR 25. For a book of this size, I can live with that price so I ordered it. Curious to see if it will ever arrive Did I need it? Nah. Do I want it? Sure!
  21. One of the funniest things I ever heard, was in a documentary about a Flemish rock band. They were auditioning drummers, and the bloke who auditioned was their number 1 fan. So they say: "Ok, let's play such-and-such tune" and the drummer goes: "Which version?" Band didn't know what he meant so he goes: "Well, the album version, the shortened single version or the extended version from your live album?" He definitely came prepared. I am once again going to attempt to get my band to play "Damn Right, I've Got The Blues" correctly. The second solo and the end section stays on A (unless I am TOTALLY wrong) but the guitarists would always play through the blues changes. Now that one guitarist is gone, I see an opportunity!
  22. Yes sir, it is. TF fretless into an Orange Terror Bass 500 through a Barefaced Super Twin (2x12). Best rig I ever had!
  23. Sunday marked the occasion of Dr Diddley's second full-length gig. This time we were to play in the Netherlands, in a bar called Café Wilhelmina, located in the Wilhelmina Square ... Despite the name, it was quite an awesome venue, with a thriving live reputation and some relatively big (local) name bookings. And Dr Diddley :-) As with our debut gig, we brought along the guys and gal from Deman Rogue to open for us. This is one tight band, for sure, with a great set list to boot. Excellent musicians all around, and I love their bassist's style and approach. Like before, I told them that we should really be opening for them. But we book the gigs, so we get the second slot :-) During their set, some drunk idiot came and sat with us. He spilled a beer, mumbled incoherently and then started making suggestive moves towards my girlfriend. I put my hand on his chest, nodded "no" in a solemn manner and indicated that he move elsewhere. Afterwards, our guitarist complimented me on handling it "like a pro". He then alluded to my Jedi mind-powers so not sure if he was kidding :-D Once Deman Rogue finished and tore down their equipment, we set up and sound-checked. Like with the first band, attendance was pretty low but hey, this is a Sunday and neither band is exactly a household name, especially in Holland. And I've always been of the opinion that you should give it all you got, even if it ends up being a paid rehearsal. We launched into our opening track (The Blasters' Long White Cadillac, also covered by Dwight Yoakam I believe) and something felt off to me. It seemed like the tempo was dragging a bit, or the beat was wrong. No clue what it was, because listening back to the recordings now I hear nothing wrong whatsoever. I took a few minutes then to check the crowd response and saw people shaking, grooving and smiling so I figured it was me. Unlike last time, we played our entire song list through without breaking it into sets. The singer had asked me to prep the order this time, and everyone agreed it worked better than last time, although in retrospect I would have made some more tweaks left and right. During our set, I started to notice that the bass was incredibly loud on stage. And I mean nauseatingly loud - not sure what gave because I hadn't really cranked up the Orange any more than usual. At least this meant the drummer would be able to hear me, I guess. I did turn down a wee bit but I didn't want to upset the sound guy. We played better than last time. More cohesion between the musicians, the jam aspects in certain songs were slightly better and the overall performance was simply much, much better than our debut gig. We do not rehearse often nor do we play out all that much, so this was a big step forwards for us. We got a great response from the people who were there (including three of my colleagues, one of whom took the train from Amsterdam - 1.5 hours!) and afterwards some drunk dude came and shook my hand, saying I was awesome. Our guitarist also told me that "people like my fretless bass - it's a tone monster". After our set we hung around a while, and then both bands went for a kebab, as basically everyone had had lunch and then nothing until 9PM. First time I played on a near-empty stomach. Between the kebab and the exuberant parking fee, I think I made exactly zero EUR from this particular gig, but we got some great pics, and the audio recordings came out fine, too! Waiting for some Go Pro video footage to make its way towards us. I will update this thread with some links once the audio/video comes in, but until then, here are some shameless FB plugs - feel free to give us some love! Dr Diddley Deman Rogue
  24. Hi all, Looking for some ukulele-driven album recommendations. I have Eddie Vedder's album (and the Into The Wild soundtrack) and Lyle Ritz. Genres...I'm a bass player, I'll listen to anything! YouTube links are also welcome, by the way!
