1. I started learning The Doors' Love Her Madly. By ear, it's harder than I expected. Mainly cos I have been neglecting ear training for quite a while now.
2. Thanks gareth, glad to see you consider me a hack as well
3. Interesting ! Our drummer uaed to want to do this back when he and I played in a different band. I may bring it up again. Will need to actually sit down and learn the parts... Oh, who am I kidding, I learn all my parts standing up anyway!
4. For 2019 I have a few resolutions: - learn 12 songs (one of which is Bouree) - play jazz blues in all 12 keys (tbat one book, figured I would spend a month on each key) - get better at walking bass, since it's such a big part of my current playing style. In addition, I am slowly working my way through the Wonderworld album (Uriah Heep, of course). The late Gary Thain never ceases to amaze me!!
5. As a fretless Tony Franklin owner, all I can say is the bass is amazing. My main axe before this one was an MIA Fender Marcus Miller 5 string jazz. As good as that bass is, the TF is so much better. I feel guilty towards the instrument for being such a hack
6. I like that idea! Thanks!
7. Hi gang, I am looking into buying an Orange Terror Bass 50 head. Doesn't come with a gig bag but I read on the Orange site that the size is similar to a Tiny Terror. So the obvious question is: would this bass head fit in a Tiny Terror gig bag? Thanks, EPB
8.
My problem is a lack of talent. I'm absolutely rubbish. At everything. Particularly at applying myself so I improve. Luckily I'm old enough not to care about the gaping chasm and yawning emotional abyss that I am confronted with whenever I stare into the depths of my soul and gaze upon the icy void that is my inner existene, broken and embittered, a hostage to my own failings, a disappointment even in my own mediocrity and in the banal frustrations that torment my true inner self. Still, mustn't grumble, eh.
C'mon Zenitram, don't hold back: tell us how you really feel! I do know how it feels, Blue. I was in a very good bluesrock band a few years back. We were playing good gigs and opening for international acts. It was fun and challenging music (all covers, but it's blues so it's perceived differently from your average cover band gig) and I learnt a lot. Then it all imploded due to personal issues between several members. The singer and one of the guitarists went on with their other gig, which was also blues but mixed covers and originals. They've since released 2 albums and a DVD, have toured internationally and will embark on a bigger tour next year, in support of their 3rd album. Me? I have told my 4 hour cover band that I will quit after the last gig on the books (in November - 87 days to go) and I have no clue when I will be looking for another band, again. I'll take the break I mentioned in this forum, and we'll see what happens next.
9. If you want something really different, with loads of excellent bass lines, check out Tune Yards: http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=tune+yards+nikki+nack&qpvt=tune+yards+nikki+nack&FORM=VDRE You may not like it, though
10. About two months ago, the band leader of my pop cover band announced to the band that one of the lead singers had decided to quit the band, and take a break from music in general. I'd seen it coming (if you've been in the game for a while, you tend to notice certain signals I guess) so I was not surprised at the news. What did surprise me, was that I found myself being envious of the singer's decision. I contemplated it for a while, and realized that I am not happy in this band, but mainly stayed cos the two lead vocalists' voices blend well together and they made for a nice, different sound. With one element gone, my main reason for staying also disappeared. So I told the band I will play the remaining three shows (and help audition a replacement singer) and I'll be done with them after that, too. What I intended to do is take a break from playing in bands, and finally focus on learning the songs I always wanted to but never got around to (loads of funk, soul and '70s hard rock) because I was busy playing in rockabilly, blues and pop bands. Aside from that, I wanted to take the time to really work with the bass instruction books I have: dig into theory, harmony, walking bass, slap techniques, upright bass ... All the things I can fake now, but only to a limited degree. But rather than sit out my remaining few months with the current band and then get started on my "band break" and start studying, I started looking at the ads. Guess old habits are hard to break? So now I have an audition for a band not too dissimilar to the one I am walking out of; a possible collaboration with a lead guitarist to start a grunge cover band (something I've been wanting to do for 3 years) and I just got a FB message from a blues guitarist I know, asking if I wanna come jam with him for this new project he's starting. I've done the multiple band thing and didn't like it. So ultimately it'd be one of the three and not all three. But I really wanted a break from bands, didn't I? Well, then I spoke with a fellow bass player. She said: "I find it very hard to even WANT to be in a band anymore. I just got so used to the extra free time, that it's become a bit of a nuisance to even think of being in a band." And that scares me sh*tless ... The idea that what starts as an innocent idea ("Take a few months of, brush up on what I need to brush up and get going again) will turn into a "Yeah I used to play in bands until my early 30's" kind of anecdote. I discussed this with the singer of my old band just now, and he said: "Go with your gut feeling. And if you never come back to playing in bands again, it simply wasn't meant to be." Of course, he went on to greater things (2 cd's and a DVD, and touring all over Europe) since our band broke up. Ironically I wanted to take this very same break then, too, but ended up checking the ads and joining the band which I will quit come November. Confused? Yeah, me too. But there's definitely a pattern ... Any thoughts?
11. I got me a Squier Classic Vibe 50s Precision (single coil) last year, as a backup bass. Also because I wanted a 4-stringer again, other than my electric upright. The neck was warped (I foolishly did not bother to check it when I bought it) and I put flatwound strings on it. Sound is really good, and a few yanks on the old truss rod have straightened the neck out nicely. I'd love to put TI Jazz flats on it but they cost too much compared to the price of the bass Bit of spam: I play said bass on the video of "La Grange" which is on the opening page of my band's website. I believe I played it through an Ashdown amp.
12. Haha no worries, you can call me Dave! Or EPB. Or you can call me Al Geoff, thanks for the invite!
13. Hello All, My name's David but I've been going by the moniker of EddiePlaysBass for years now, so I guess most people will start referring to me as Eddie at some point :-) I got into playing bass 12 or 13 years ago: went out for drinks with my friends and we decided to start a band. I volunteered to sing, which turned out to be a bad idea ... So I bought a cheap bass (a MusicMan imitation by a brand called Samick) and off I went! I do not have that bass anymore, but I do still have the Ibanez BTB405QM I bought to replace it. Didn't keep the Yamaha TRBII 6-string (what was I thinking?) but I do still have - and use as my main bass - the MIA Fender Jazz Marcus Miller signature 5-string for which I traded in said Yamaha. Along the way I also picked up a cheap 5-string fretless Palmer and a 4-string Squier Classic Vibe '50s Precision which I am currently setting up to my liking. Oh and an NS Design WAV4 which currently is not used quite as much as I'd like or need to! I've gone from pop to poprock to hardrock to metal to rockabilly (for about 7 years, hence the electric upright) and have settled on blues with a heavy dose of rock for the past two years with Dusty Dollar. Recently our singer and one of the guitarists quit and we're now trying to reinvent the band. Finding a great singer to replace a great singer is proving to be a lot more cumbersome than I thought it would be! Anyway, I will be lurking for a while and posting from time to time. Cheers, Dave/EPB
