1.
There is a new boy about town, the Ledj 7q5...
Those look rather good. I'm thinking of upgrading the PARs as they don't throw a huge amount of light. They are good enough for small venues where they are on top of you but struggle a bit if more than about 15 feet away. I could also do with some lighter stands - they are a decent height and very sturdy, but weigh a ton!
2. I've had a Peavey Databass combo for about 20 years now. Every now and then I think about getting something else, but it's been so reliable and sounds great. I've had to re-cone it a couple of times just through general wear and tear - the last time the braided cables wore out and can't be re-soldered. It's a 450W 1x15 combo that slots neatly into the boot of my car. It's not the lightest of amps but has been gigged extensively and doesn't owe me a penny. Colour me GAS-free!
3. Frankenstein by the Edgar Winter band. Good warm up exercise too, especially the chromatic run
4. How on earth do I correct the typo in the thread title? Darn it. Edit: Thank you magic forum pixie
5. I've just bought a new toy - a Chauvet Mini Kinta. It's a compact LED wide-angle moonflower type of light and a brilliant (ooh - nice pun!) bit of kit for the money. I can't wait to try it out at a gig. It got me wondering what other bands use. Anyway, my lighting kit for our pub covers band is: Stairville (Thomann) DMX Master-1 controller 4 of their cheap PAR-56 DMX cans Plus the one I've just bought I assume that a lot of you will be responsible for lighting (and probably everything else too!), so what do you use? DMX? LEDs? Do you have a lighting engineer or fly it yourself?
6. If you want a very general answer, Jazzes tend to have slimmer necks and a more 'burpy' sound, Precisions have a wider neck and a more 'thumpy' sound. Now go search on YouTube (No offense intended!)
7.
Slapping and other techniques like that should be rather used[s] in showcases[/s] when nobody else is in earshot
FTFY
8. I hope you don't drink on gigs. Looks like that would need a lot of concentration
9. I've got one of these (Squier Indonesian P-bass Special). I used the standard pups for a while - they are actually not that bad. However a couple of weeks ago I swapped then out for a P/J set of SD QPs. 10 minute job with the soldering iron, straight swap, no fettling required and the sound is now HUGE. The output on the SD pups is so hot, I've had to lower them a fair bit to get them somewhere close to the output of my other basses. It's a gorgeous bass that still only stands me at about £250 all in
10. Does 3 sets of 80s metal = extended widdly guitar solos?
11. Another take: After rehearsing for ages with no prospect of being gig-ready, we are looking for another person to join the succession of bass players that have got bored and quit
12. Marianne Faithful had a string of affairs in the 60s
13. A few weeks ago a bass player friend of mine came round and ended up having a go on some of my basses. He asked me how I managed to play with such a poor set up. To be honest I'd never really noticed - you just get used to it and get on with playing. I have since given my basses a bit of a tweak. The action is lower, the intonation is better, but it really doesn't make a lot of difference when I'm gigging. It still feels and sounds the same, and I can still get around the fretboard. It seems that some people are obsessive about getting the 'ultimate' set up, some are not Dragging it slightly back on topic, I'm not a famous player - just done it for enough years to be reasonably competent. I have never played a famous player's baas either.
14. Rubber-lipped Aerosmith singer Steve Tyler once won a trade award for the quality of his grout work
15. The Stone Roses are so named after monkey-like frontman Ian Brown broke a tooth on a particularly out-of-date box of chocolates given to him for Christmas by his grandma
16. Scotsman Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street only became a hit on its second release, once the original bagpipe track was replaced by a saxophone
17. Norman Greenbaum got his name after accidentally sitting on a freshly painted park bench
18. Some Kandinsky would look cool (again NOT pop art!)
19.
But it's not Pop Art.
I know it's not pop art, but it is Mondrian :-)
20. Mondrian looks cool
21.
...In terms of upgrading it - a lot of people talk about upgrading the pickups - any news welcome
See what it sounds like first. If it's not quite what you want then a set of Seymour Duncan QPs would be a reasonable place to start.
