1. Had a band rehearsal tonight before our first gig this Friday Went along to 309 studios in leeds and used a big trace Elliot combo they had set up for us Wow it was awesome. For an old beat up amp it sounded great, great tone and loads of power. It was big old thing 4 x 10 speakers with a graphic equaliser, really want one now Except for...... This thing weighed a ton! I go to the gym and our drummer can bench press 300+ lbs and even he struggled to pick it up on is own!
2. My bg250 combo is the same when I use my iphone in the aux socket, I guess it is more or less the same amp as the bh250 However I notice that some songs are ok and others are not. Some of the songs on my iPhone have been downloaded from iTunes, direct from cd or from iomio. These all have differing output levels and I notice this when connected to my bluetooth radio in the car. Someone with expert mp3 knowledge may be able to help. To add to this I use my active ibanez and also my jazz bass in the amp and that doesn't make much difference either as the bg250 has a passive / active sense to change the input level I usually have to have my iPhone on full volume and the input gain for the guitar on around 4 for it to work nicely
3.
Not good. Ibanez or their distributer will probably claim that the ragged edge is due to the nature of the top wood used, but IMO if you can't get a smooth cut edge out of the wood it shouldn't be used for making instruments.
Some of the edging is smooth and some isn't. I put that down to bad workmanship I am sure ibanez would change that for you in an instant As said before not acceptable on a budget or premium instrument
4. Just been reading this with interest as after a week and half of playing my new jazz bass to death I found my finger tips are getting sore!! I have been playing bass for nearly two years and I thought my fingers had hardened enough After a bit of checking last night night I checked the action height and found it to be exactly as per fender specifications but when checked against my Ibanez it was double the height. I noticed that the strings required greater pressure to push down onto the frets on my jazz bass compared to my Ibanez (hence my sore finger tips ) I lowered the action but this only partially resolved it but also introduced some fret buzz lower down. I put on a set of old strings in case the new one were not broken in yet and this helped a little. upon inspection of the nut height I noticed it is around double the height from the bottom of the string to the fretboard on my jazz bass compared to the ibanez. a very quick measure before work today: distance from bottom of E string to fretboard Jazz bass : 4mm Ibanez : 2mm I realise the measurement needs to be from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string but didn't have time this morning to accurately measure this. I am thinking I may need to file the nut out a little. Any help or advice greatly received Paul
5.
and I bet the rest of the band never even noticed you had a new bass
To be fair they did notice I had a new bass......................but that may have had something to do with the fact I have been going on about it for a while!
6.
Not thinking about getting one but still interested to read your review. Report back when you've gigged it!
Well first use in anger last night 3 hour rehearsal with all the band The guitar performed beautifully, using an old line6 amp at the studio. Set my eq on the amp something like, position 1 on the guitar (humbuckers) both pup volumes on full, tone about half way 3 hours straight playing no issues, great tone with a bit of growl when I played a bit more agressivley Will probably change the strings at some point as they feel a bit harsh compared with other bass, or maybe just because I am playing this one a lot at the moment So far would score the bass Sound / tone quality. 9.5/10 Build quality. 10/10 Playability 9/10 Looks / finish 8.5/10 Value for money 10/10 Overall I would score this a 9.5/10 Bear in mind I am also scoring this in comparison with a few other basses I have tried and played recently Including a £1500+ deluxe USA jazz bass If they could make this bass with a maple neck, block inlays 3 colour burst lacquer finish that would be awesome............ Oh wait they already do but it is double the price
7.
These basses are fantastic! I tried one last year in a local music shop and it played beautifully. Only one thing put me off, firstly was the finish, it was a white with black s-plate but the entire body was covered in a thick plastic that felt more like a 'shell' than a paint or varnish. But as a bass it was really, really good, much better than the more expensive Fenders they had in store.
The finish on mine is satin 2 colour sunburst. Definitely painted as you can see the wood grain beneath the paint. Quite a nice finish although not sure how durable it will be compared to a lacquered finish. Road worn look may be quicker than other models!
8.
Not thinking about getting one but still interested to read your review. Report back when you've gigged it!
will be out at practice session this weekend so will let you know how it holds up with the rest of the band
9. My shiny new bass arrived today! Fender modern player jazz in sunburst and I am well pleased. After trying out quite a few different guitars I had settled on a jazz bass of some description and tried out a range of fenders ranging from £1600 - £240 The Modern player suited my budget although I would have gone for a MIM if it had been better than the modern player (which it wasnt!) Plays great, was set up spot on out of the box. I checked action height, intonation and truss rod and all exactly as per Fender spec. Sounds fantastic, the humbuckers work a treat and with the switch you can change to single coils for more growl! the tone pot works good and actually adjusts the tone quite a lot. All in all a great chinese fender. The only guitar in the shop to play a bit better was the USA deluxe which was out of my budget. To be perfectly fair the squire VM I tried played exactly the same as the modern player it just didnt sound as good with duncan designed pickups. I was tempted to go for the squire and upgrade the pick ups but it would have cost me the same as the Modern player by the time I had done. just my quick review if anyone is thinking about getting one of these bass's cheers Paul sorry about the crappy photo from my phone
10. I have a couple of bass's and Ibanez and a fender jazz but am interested in building my own Seen a few kits on ebay and the web but not sure how good these will be, I have built a cigar box guitar earlier this year from scratch. shaping the neck, cutting in the frets etc so building a bass from a kit should be a bit easier. The paintig is probably the hardest part for me, although I have a compressor, paint gun and airbrush kit (never tried it out!!) Anyone have any kit recommendations or "must avoid" Here is a link to the kit i have been looking at and also a few pics of my CBG - kit link - http://www.kitbuiltguitars.co.uk/jazz-j-bass-build-your-own-bass-guitar-kit.html?___store=default&gclid=CIXcgfC52LoCFQjKtAodjGgAZw CBG pics
11. Yes was interested in having a look at one. Might give them a call to see if they have the odd one left
12.
Are you talking about these guys? http://www.faridaguitars.co.uk/bass/
Are these still available? A few google searches and they don't appear to be available anywhere
13.
I adore my Modern Player. I picked up a bargain at PMT as I had the last one of the stock without the pick up selector which I prefer anyway. I prefer to use the volume controls on each pickup rather than have a switch. Only cost me £320 brand new
Yes the modern player is at the top of the list still The one I tried in Dawson's was great and it was one of the older models with the two volumes and tone control. However it was up for sale at £428 so not a bargain like you had
14. Taken from a post i replied to yesterday I tried out several fenders yesterday in my local music shop, I ran out of time before i got to the jaguar bass to try so I need to get back there and try it BUT I did try out the modern player jazz bass which is made in china and it was really good. My findings on what i tried yesterday: Fender usa deluxe jass bass - natural finish £1500 ish: playability=awesome 10/10 sound / tone = awesome 10/10 Fender MIM jazz bass - sunburst £650 ish: playability = average 6/10 sound / tone = average 7/10 Fender modern player jazz bass - sunburst £400 ish : playability good 8/10 sound / tone = very good 8.5/10 Squier VM jazz bass - natural £250 ish : playability very good 9/10 sound / tone = average 7/10 These are just my humble opinion based on me paying hard cash for one of the above. I wish i could justify the £1500 for the deluxe bass but that isnt going to happen this year disapointed with the MIM bass just not as good as either the modern player or squier I wish the modern player played a bit better as the squier still undecided!!

16. +1 for the TC BG250 combo. I sold my Ashdown mag300 210 earlier this year, I just couldnt get the sound I wanted out of it no matter how i set the eq, gain, etc Also i was pushing it to keep up with our mad drummer ( my brother - he only has one volume level on the drums - LOUD) and guitarists using 80 - 100 watt marshalls I got myself a BG250 115 and it is the dogz bollox easy loud enough although on paper it is only 250 watts and the ashdown was 300 watts great tone, light and easy to set up and use. the toneprint works well although I leave mine on the duff mckagan chorus for when we play any GNR stuff mine was a shade over £300 in the summer but I think they have gone up in price now and also have some other models 210, 212 etc I would recommend taking your bass to the music shop and trying a few out till you find one you like also +1 for the trace will be better than the ashdown too
17.
Hello there just measured it and it's 38mm.... my BB1200 are 43.5 ish !!
Many thanks. I am used to playing slim necks so the bb is still on my short list Cheers paul
18.
Anyone know the exact nut width on thru 1024 & 2024...? Im enjoying my 424 but am finding the neck a bit narrow
Your question in reverse. Can you let me know the nut size on a 424 please I am looking for another bass and am narrowing down my list, the 424 is on it. I need to go and try one out ASAP
19. So I was all sorted..................or I thought I was!!!! Got my mind set on a Jazz bass either new (modern player) or pre owned for around £400 Was also considering a squier modified series 70's style, sunburst, block inlays etc. I was in Machester today and called into Dawsons to have a look at their bass range especially the JB's when I saw this......... wow this thing looks even better in real life, unfortunatley didnt get time to try it out. Does anyone on here have any experience of the these basses. My first bass was an Ibanez GSR200 and it is my main bass that I play, so in general I like the Ibanez bass range. I really wanted a fender but now I have seen this I am not so sure. It makes the Fender look a bit dull !
20. really pleased with my BG250 had it about 3 months now and is plenty loud enough against our enthusiastic drummer and competing lead guitarists. the sound / tone alters quite a bit when the master is turned past 4 and it sounds a lot better in the higher numbers I find that mine works better with my ibanez gsr200 wihch is an active bass rather than my peavey t40. not sure why i guess it is a modern amp working with a modern bass. no matter how i mess around with settings on the amp and peavey it just doesnt sound as good as with the ibanez - on my old ashdown amp the peavey sounded 100% better than the ibanez??? still the ibanez and the BG250 have a far better sound than the ashdown set up I had previously so I am well chuffed with it easy to cart around as well as it is pretty light for the size of it ENJOY
21. +1 for the TC bg250 I got myself one of these a few months ago and I love it. ok for small gigs, pubs, church halls etc. loud enough to punch through our enthusiastic drummer!! and our guitarists using 80W marshall amps the toneprint is really good. We play a few GNR covers so i use the Duff McKagan chorus and that sounds great. lightweight 16KG is the specified weight and I believe it.
22. +1 for the ibanez GSR200 This was my first bass almost 2 years ago. I have a Peavey T40 which is mighty on tone and presence but my go to bass is the GSR200. Lately this is all i am playing. been looking at trading the peavey in for a jazz bass - 70's style or geddy lee??
23. yep you only notice the fan / noise in dead silence. I played around with the tone print and there are some good effects to be had i play a lot of GNR stuff so the duff signature chorus was of interest to me. It sounds ok but not quite there. probably have to tweak some other settings or more likely have a bit more talent! P
24. Just thought I would share my experience of my new amp. After much deliberation, read: clicking on the internet on a night whilst having drunk too much beer! I had shortlisted a couple of amps to replace my ashdown mag300 210. I never got on with the ashdown from the day i bought it, I just didnt like the tone no matter how much I messed around with the settings The two amps I shortlisted were the peavey tour TNT 600w and the TC BG250 in between times i picked up a peavey mkvi head and tried that out. It did have a great sound but I realised for what I need the amp for (the odd gig, band / beer practice & practice at home) I didn't realy want to carry around seperate head and cabs. I plumped for the TC BG250 for a few reasons, mainly sound / tone quality as I had heard these before and liked the tone. Also the amp has the rehearsal input which is great for jamming along to songs. Anyway got the amp home tonight and was blown away with it great tone, loud (GOOD), easy to use, light to carry around and plenty of effects with the tone print the toneprint is a doddle to use, free app for the iphone and is really easy to upload new tonepriont settings. Overall i would give this a 9.5/10 It only loses 0.5 of a point as there is a bit of background noise coming from the power amp, just a slight hiss from the back - sounds like a fan but I am not sure they have one in these. However you do not notice this when you start playing at just a shade over 300 quid I consider this a good buy cheers Paul
25. just to add my 2p worth. I have an Ashdown mag300 210 combo and I hate it!! nothing wrong with it, it works fine every time, is loud enough (sort of - is any amp loud enough )) but i dont like the tone it puts out. I have adjusted, pissed about and tried all the settings but I cant get the sound i like. Only sounds good when I put my guitar through my xoom B2 pedal first with a Hartke amp and cab simulator will be trading soon for a hartke, peavey or trace elliot
