I was just watching some Abraham Laboriel vids on youtube - he was demonstrating a right hand technique where he seems to anchor his fingers on his thumb and 'flick' all 4 fingers on a string one after the other to achieve incredible speed and a 'slappy' sort of sound - unfortunately it seemed to be filmed with a mobile or something and it was in spanish, so I couldn't really work out what was going on. Anyone know about this technique? Cheers!

Anyone interested in swapping [url="http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=60150"]this[/url] for a good 6 string (preferably with that MTD gospel-y sort of sound)? I'm selling my Double Bass. Verbally valued at £800 by [url="http://www.timtoftviolins.com/"]Tim Toft Violins[/url] The good stuff - c1920s, Bohemian, set up for Jazz, with pickup. Ply back. Very resonant sound. With case and Chinese-made German style bow. The not-so-good - Tim advised replacing the bridge as soon as possible, and strengthening the head as this appears to be a weakspot. There also seems to be a sympathetic buzz on the pickup when the A string is played - I don't know anything about pickups so I cannot say for sure but it may just be that it's not in the right position. The case has stitching coming off the main strap. As you can tell from the pics it's seen some life and is in a 'cosmetically challenged' state with plenty of scratches. I took up DB a year ago, and just don't have the practice time to play the thing properly. £800 o.n.o. I'm in South Cheshire. The news knocked me for 6 when I heard it last week, he was a colleague of mine in Liverpool for a few years, tremendously warm and funny guy (he would always lay on a thick Newcastle accent when in funny mode). A player of the highest standard, he would perform concertos with the orchestra which is, let's face it, a real rarity - to have a Double Bass concerto in a mainstream concert season. He played like a star, the audience loved it, as did the reviewers. I remember his trial for the RLPO job - a real 'roast-up' - Mahler 1, he played the infamous solo not only totally accurately but intensely musically [i]every time[/i] - it was a few shows in a row. Dave was also Co-principal in the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and went from there to an Opera Company (Principal) in Oslo I think prior to the Liverpool Phil. His photo is on a big poster outside the Phil (amongst photos of some other players). R.I.P. Dave.

Sorry, couldn't take my eyes off the dancers! Bassists seemed to be taking it in turns for quite a lot of the gig. Yep, great band, some young players in there too. St Luke's seems to be a great venue for gigs - originally supposed to be a rehearsal venue for the London Symphony Orchestra i think.

Time to sell my Ibanez EDA905 active 5 string bass as I need to finance my recent P-bass purchase... Luthite body, Piezo active pickup and magnetic passive pickup. Recently set up (with new elite strings) by KGB guitars in Birkenhead (3 weeks ago, cost £70), plays better than ever now. However I'm more of a traditionalist in terms of sound (hence the P Bass purchase) and this is a very lively, bright sort of sound IMO well suited to the Metal end of things. Review here: [url="http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/bass_guitars/ibanez/eda905/"]Ultimate Guitar review[/url] There is a small amount of fret wear but KGB guitars told me it wasn't neccessary to re-fret as the fret wear wasn't bad enough to make any difference. It's also missing the truss rod cover (as you can see from the photo). With this in mind the sale price is £200, pick up only from either South Cheshire (CW6) weekends & evenings (or Tuesday afternoons), or central Liverpool during the day (work address so no amp available). People are welcome to try it. -

Hi all - thanks for all the names; I think I've found the bassist - Andrew Gouche - I got the DVD (Chaka Khan - One classic night - live) off Amazon for a fiver, and the 'I'm every woman' track is from that concert. AG is the MD for that & does a bit of introducing etc. There was a bit of chatter on BassTalk a while back with some complaining he was overplaying (generally in his tenure as MD of CK's band 1-2 years back) - but I think it's the dog's spuds. What a great sound (Tobias 6-string according to basstalk chatter?)- little bit of slap every now and then - loads of semiquaver runs in all the right places, bit of vibrato.. the list goes on and on.. I've been searching for some of his stuff on youtube etc. - when I've got a moment I'll try and post the links. Seems like he learnt his trade in the Gospel world - no sheet music or anything, just picked it all up by ear from being in that environment for years. In fact some of his other band mates in the CK DVD are with him on all his religious stuff on youtube, he seems to have his foot in both camps (religious/secular).

Just got this MP3 off amazon - I'm blown away by the bass playing on [url="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Im-Every-Woman/dp/B001NMZ3TW/ref=sr_f2_9?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1230372093&sr=102-9"]this[/url] - Chaka Khan live, I'm every woman. With it being an MP3 track I couldn't get any info - just a picture of the CD cover. Anyone know who's on bass for this, and whether s/he is on all the C K stuff? Cheers, Jon

Hi there - I recently got an Ibanez EDA 905 from a fellow Basschatter, and, although it's very comfy and light, I'm struggling with achieving the right sound for me - I'd like to be able to play both with the traditional Motown sound, and with a decent slap sound. At the moment I can get a good range of brighter sounds, that have plenty of front-end attacks to them. The slap sound (actually the 'pop') is quite different, a sort of 'razzy' 'synth-y' sort of sound (difficult to describe). I've heard that there is a big range of sounds you can get with this bass, it just needs tweaking (I have played around a bit with the tone controls underneath - I currently have it on the maximum bass boost setting). I don't really want to get rid of it - it's just so damn comfy; and I'm sure I'm not playing/set it up correctly. Any EDA players out there that have any tips? Cheers Jon

Hi all, I'm in a pop covers band, whose keyboard player left recently, leaving me (bass), lead guitar(and male vocals), female vocals, and drums. So we're going with 3 piece w/vocals on top. Some of the original numbers are ok, but mostly whenever there's a guitar solo, all the harmony goes (obviously) so do you have any suggestions for pieces? Police comes to mind as they are a 3 piece, aren't they? We're doing some Van Morrisson, Oasis, Coldplay, Stereophonics, Maggie May, and Mustang S (of course). So we need to expand the set list a bit! Personally I'd love to do some sabbath but have been out-voted! Well, I suppose it doesn't fit in the set... Cheers all, JonnyB.

Just bought a Peavey Grind 6 string off Kev - great guy to do buisness with - wrapped the bass up like a baby so even Parcel Force couldn't damage it! Good comms and patience with my questions, etc. Cheers, Jonathan.
