  1. Am I not correct with both my Eden Metro combo and my EBS HD350 that I set the volume on bass to max, on the amp to zero and then feed in the gain until when playing my loudest notes (silently ) the clipping light just flickers. Then I adjust the amp volume up as required.

I have an Eden Metro and I'm dead chuffed with it. It's basically a WT300 amp sitting atop a 210 cab. Lovely warm tone, although perhaps not as rich as a valve power amp, but the EQ is fantastic. Doesn't need much more than a wee bit of enhance and a touch of extra bass. I'm thinking of adding a 115 cab to get a bit more low end, but overall it's a fantastic bit of kit.

Its only downside is the weight - it's a big beast.

Plus one for this. I add an Eden Glowplug through channel 2 (eventhough said channel is the valve pre-amp channel) to give as much or as little valve tone as you could need plus an Ampeg SVT 115 at larger venues. Really sounds great. Plus Ive added casters so not too bad a loadin/out.

  3. 150 quid bought me this L.P. blue Sq C/V 50s P bass. Expected this to be of fine quality but once set up and played in anger, I was shocked how well it produces such a great low thump. Would a swap-out of the pup for something a little more boutique improve the tones - I doubt it.

For years I swore by having the cab standing only on its rubber feet. I used to have it taken out of its flightcase to facilitate that. When that case wore out I had a live in case made and had no foam under the feet to carry that on.

Eventually, I had no need of flightcases and decided to put some castors on the cab. The result/? No difference that I ever detected.

I would suggest that tipping the cab on its side might make an artificial difference because of the change in the dispersion.

So to compare tones properly, one would have to turn the cab through 180 degrees!! - don't think I will bother!!!

@Paddy515 just normal grip tips, my guitarist buddy got me a selection pack to try.

so far Deleon and Gel are my fave but I may explore further, nylon is too floppy

OK, thanks for that - ive gone for a couple of the Derlin Red Rock Control as they look the most robust and also "rubbery" to use the reverse way round. We shall hear how they sound and will advise in due time.

    Regards, Paddy.

I am a pick player (of no great repute) forced by an old injury to my index finger knuckle which means it’s just hurts to play, i I don’t fancy wearing my joint out earlier than it has to!

But I have found this, I do the odd finger style, and sometimes songs just need it, and it’s difficult deadening the ring of strings just with a pick, so learning to mute with your palm and other hand helps. I do ‘cheat’ sometimes with a fret wrap to help me.

The other thing I have discovered are Dava picks.

Firstly they are super comfortable to grip, don’t slip with sweaty fingers, but rotate it and use the rubber part instead of the sharp pick end and it gives a very very good dead sound so with the tone rolled off you are in finger Motown territory - they are fully worth a try IMHO

Do you use the "rock control" version for bass playing?

  8. One 4 ohm cab and one 8 ohm cab would run at 2.67 ohms so no - and also the 4 ohm cab would draw 2/3 of the watts from the head so would be 50% louder than the 8 ohm. Complicated aint it!!
