yeah...its fine with the Trace preamp though...plenty of power there and the power amp has a input level indicator on it too showing how much is coming in from the preamp - with the Trace its recieving loads - with the Ampeg its recieving...well not much! c

I've got an Ampeg SVP-BSP Preamp (the Billy Sheehan model - signed by the man himself) and it sounds absolutely fantastic. Its got a clean and an overdrive channel which can be combined to make a lovely warm tone with a hint of distortion. At the moment I have it sitting in my 'studio' for the odd occasion when I record a bit of bass, but I really want to stick it in my gigging rack in place of my Trace Elliot GP-11. The problem I have is that I just cannot get an kind of volume out of it! I A/Bed it last night against the Trace and with everything flat out it only puts out about half the output of the Trace. Its probably giggable volume (I am in a LOUD rock band!) but it may mean me having to push my power amp (Ampeg AP3550) alot more than I do with the Trace and I don't want to be struggling with headroom. This has always been a problem which is why I switched it for the Trace in the first place a year or so ago, but I would much rather be using the Ampeg. I have tried replacing the valve....no difference. The preamp has a Pad button on it. I mainly use a Yamaha Attitude which although is a passive bass has very high output so normally I do have the pad button in. If I have the pad button out then yes, I do get much more satisfactory volume, BUT the peak light is on all the time even with the gain on about 1. Would this damage the preamp if the thing is constantly peaking? I'm guessing the pad function is to allow for active basses and although mine is high output its perhaps not as high as an active but it is too high for the normal input mode....if you get my drift? any thoughts on this? peace c

well i quite like the idea of jam sessions and would like to get back into going to some, but i don't know....the last few i've been to seemed a bit odd..... you'd just get an entire band get up and do a couple of songs, or four or five people who obviously knew each other and played together anyway getting up and doing stuff that is obviously rehearsed. to me, that isn't what a jam session is about....i want to get up with a bunch of people i've never played with before and just see what happens - yeah theres a good chance it'll fall apart but theres also a good chance you'll come up with something cool and different just from being in unknown circumstances and having to play on the fly. theres a new jam night at a pub quite local to me on thursdays so may well head down there at some point and see whats what peace c

'A PayPal invoice of the balance (£3,149)' and 'If you were wondering why the full price was not displayed at the top, it is because a Fodera’s value lies where most people don’t look, and not on the contrary, where they often glance' plus i think the pics are from the bassnw.com website....? look familiar idiots!! peace c

yeah one of my first basses was a Precision and since then I've pretty much always used one (or at least a derivitive version) for me they're just comfortable, and such a good workhorse that you can just play them to death and they'll keep going and going. As far as listening material for P-Bass users, theres just too many to mention: Steve Harris - (Iron Maiden) JJ Burnel - (Stranglers) Billy Sheehan - (early stuff with Talas and his home modded P Billy P-bass) James Jamerson - (loads of Motown sessions) and pretty much any rock/punk bassist since the dawn of time! although the P isn't restricted to just these genres - off the top of my head theres Pino Pallidino, the guy from Doves, Norman Watt-Roy used one on Rhythm Stick, Sting, Bob Daisley, Bryan Adams ... oooh i could go on! peace C

yeah..i'd have definitely learned more theory also would have generally focused much more on my playing and less on arsing about with motorbikes and drugs! peace c

i preferred IAS_2+ also definitely a much 'fuller' sound, less weedy than t'other. some nice bass bits too....bit Ryan Martinie-ish although i'm getting too old for all this shouty metal and blastbeats! peace c

yeah .. two outputs..one for each pickup so you can run each to a seperate amp a la mr sheehan himself. (not that i ever do that...carting one bass amp around is enough for me!) the Attitudes are indeed very good basses....take a bit of getting used to as they have a very wide neck and the placing of the humbucker/knobs means having to modify your slap technique a little..(although to be honest these basses are more about the ROCK than slapping) if anyones got a Red ltd 1 for sale let me know!!!......... by the way the Precision Special now has a Dimarzio Will Power split pickup, a heavy duty Gotoh bridge and a black/chrome checkerboard pickguard!!! peace c

(the Ibanez may be for sale soon to fund something new!!) peace c

just found this site which make jewellery out of old guitar strings etc (all for charidee) http://wearyourmusic.relix.com/gallery.html and wondered if there are any other ingenious uses for old bass strings? personally i found that an old E string makes an excellent tool for clearing out a bunged up bath plug hole! gets right round the u-bend a treat!! and i vaguely remember an old pic of pearl jam where one of them has bass strings lacing up his doc martens!!! any more ideas? peace c

heres a couple of the top of my head - i'll probably think of more: Michael Anthony from Van Halen - a pretty steady rock player but I was listening to the old Fair Warning album the other day and theres some very tidy little bass parts on there. the guy from the band Live a post in another topic reminded me of him (can't remember his name and i'm too lazy to go look for it on a cd!) - some of his slap stuff on the first couple of albums is very good and a great tone too. and also alot of the bass playing on Kat Bush's albums over the years - particularly the red shoes album. peace c

damn thats nice...pretty much exactly the kinda P i'm after!!!! peace C

Obscure Musical Backwaters - The Great SGC Nanyo Thread

i had an original passive SB301 back in the day.... can't for the life of me remember where i got it from mind you.... hmmmmm.... was a very nice little bass as i recall too: lightweight, small in stature, nice thin quick neck and looked pretty sweet too. they used to have one or two 'name' users as i recall from the old ads back in guitarist magazine.....female bassist from shakespears sister being one (i think anyways..the old brain not working too well today!!..or anyday for that matter! ). i'd probably pick up another if i saw it at the right price peace c -
ah! yeah i was gonna enquire as to how much that chrome attitude was......loadsamoney!!!!!.....but definitely a one off collectors piece! you could of course get a bass chromed like that yourself at sims for (i'm guessing) quite a bit less though but would be missing a bit of the billy mojo. peace c

i've got a whole marshall bass rig - 400w integrated bass head + matching 4x10 and 1x15 but have to confess that i've never used the head!! it comes out with me now and again as a spare but aside from that it resides in the garage most of its life! i bought the whole rig purely because i wanted the cabs!! from the manual it looks like it could be quite a good amp mind you...bi-ampable etc and the speakers are pretty good, though perhaps not as defined as some would like (good for rock though!) theres a strong possibility that either just the head or maybe the whole rig will be up for sale soon too! peace c

ok so one of the outputs has gone on my ampeg power amp...its old and secondhand and quite likely to be sold on quite soon. so was wondering if anyone knew of a handy amp repair man preferably around the norwich kinda area (don't wanna be sending it off as postage costs would be hefty..like the amp itself!) that can fix this up nice n cheap?? peace c
