getting an upright... where to start?
chrkelly replied to spiltmilk_2000's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I hear everything you're saying there. For the record I own a £600 bass and a bass that must have cost £800 when new- but the bass I grab for all but gigs where I need the 5-strings cost me £100 including a new pickup! And I'm sort of proud of that fact. I'm sure that as you say, a bass that cost a grand will be 'better' but I would be far less happy to drag it 'round London, exposing it to all matter of temperature and humidity changes, other peoples food, drink and flailing limbs, and the occasional low/narrow doorway. I guess I'm still having trouble getting my head around the fact that a bass that cost £1000 barely registers on some peoples scale of useability, when £600 is the most I ever spent on an electric, but thanks for your answers- it gives me bit more to chew over whilst weighing up all the other size/weight/fragility issues!
The whole price thing is a very grey area with uprights. Just because it costs more doesn't mean it's better. If it works (vibrates properly and makes a good sound) it's worth far more than an instrument that's made with better woods and has a higher level of craftmanship that doesn't work. A cellist I know plays a £1000 Chinese instrument for his full-time orchestral job and absolutely loves it. The only thing is you never know if a new instrument is going to improve or go off with time. -
It lets you go down to a C and sounds absolutely massive due to the extra scale length. A lot of romantic/20th century classical stuff goes down low and it's an essential piece of kit for sessions.
Happy New Year to you Chris Is this the same DB you had at home when I came round to try out your NS EUB (I think that was 18 months ago) ? I know I should remember with the Lion scroll, but have to confess at that time I didn't ever think I'd go for a full size (ok, 3/4) upright, so I obviously wasn't paying enough attention. Andy
Happy new year Andy, hope you're well. Yes it's the same bass. Glad you bit the bullet on the full acoustic upright, that NS was a great instrument in its own right but felt and sounded absolutely nothing like a real double bass. Cheers, Chris

New year bump -
Thought I'd post a link here too as most people are looking for bass guitars when they visit the for sale section. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=17131 Cheers, Chris

Darn this bass, I have a complete love/hate relationship with it and I'd rather see it go to a good home rather than sit in its case and not be played. The cash would certainly help with the loan repayments for my double bass too. Not in any real rush to sell though and I'll be away from the 22nd till the new year. Chris

Ordered a new upright case form them about a month ago and it arrived in 3 days! I use them quite regularly and have never had a problem. Their prices on most things are very competitive too.

What are you using to amplify your double bass?
chrkelly replied to alexclaber's topic in EUB and Double Bass
What a thread! I think the main thing for me would be for the cab to be reasonably light and have a very small footprint, the vast majority of gigs where I need an amp are pit gigs where it's being used just to beef up my acoustic volume. I think that's the main reason the GK microbass combo remains so popular, decent sound and it can fit anywhere. A few of the pits on a recent tour were so small I was struggling for space for my aguilar db112. I always try to play without an amp wherever possible though and just send my dynb straight to the desk. For the big gigs though it's a completely different story. For rock etc. I found that I couldn't use the house floor monitors at all (too many feedback issues) and had to rely on my backline. Best cab for that was my Bergantino HS410. I used an SWR 8x8 for a while too and always hired a SWR Goliath 4x10 for touring. The cab must have a very tight bass and be used with a fairly neautral sounding head. Not doing those type of gigs much anymore though but I think smaller speakers are definitely the way to go for those volumes. -

As much as I love this amp, it just doesn't work that well for acoustic upright which is what I'm playing most of the time. It makes my '72 precision sound amazing though. Deep, fat and warmer than any other solid state amp I've played through. It's in perfect condition and is mounted in a quality Gator 2U rackbag which is included in the sale. Also includes the footswitch to select between the clean and overdrive channels. I'm based in Catford, SE London. Not interested in trades unless it's a 2 channel AI Clarus III or Focus III. £550

Finally back home, been playing my other bass all week and still same hand problems so it seems like the RD isn't the cause. Keeping that in mind I've decided to withdraw the bass from sale so I can play it again once I'm better (need to take those heavy La Bella flats off the Fender). Apologies to all those who were interested, Chris
Bump
Cheers for all the bumps guys and also apologies to anyone waiting for a reply to a pm. Unfortunately I'm having great difficulty connecting to the net this week so I'm writing this from my phone which will let me view pms but not reply to them. Very annoying! Expect replys on Sunday when I get back home. Chris
