It's a great instrument that I've been playing a lot for theatre pit gigs, however I've since bought another instrument that's more similar in size and response to my 'main' bass. Anyway, the label reads "Copy of Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno 1721, made in Germany". No date stamp but it looks like it's maybe 40/50 years old. It's a pretty standard 3/4 size viol shape. The body is laminate along with a nice thick ebony fingerboard and tailpiece. Also has ebony strips lining the neck heel, something usually only seen on older expensive basses. Structure wise, it's quite solid. There's been repairs to the scroll and headstock that were carrried out by the respected London luthier Roger Dawson some time ago and have been stable ever since. The A string tuner paddle is missing. Tunes fine though, the mechanism is still perfect it just needs a new paddle stuck in the slot on the end of the peg. Soundwise, it's very even string to string and bows very well. Tuning is stable. The fingerboard and bridge have a nice deep radius so arco is easy for a five string. The pizz sound is full with good sustain and projects well. String length is a comfortable 105cm. Comes strung with a set of a full set of Thomastik Spirocore mittels strung G to low B. A high C string is also included but not fitted. Hardcase shown is not included. NOW SOLD

Theatre Band - Headphone Monitoring question
chrkelly replied to flutophilus's topic in Amps and Cabs
It's a device that mounts on your music stand and gives you full control over your own headphone mix. It's kinda like a simplified mixing desk. Very useful if there's not much time for soundchecks. If you're relying on just the soundman I'd recommend buying a cheap in line volume control to prevent yourself being deafened. -
Theatre Band - Headphone Monitoring question

I'll post a better reply once I'm not on my iPhone but headphone choice is quite personnal. I use beyer 770s which are quite bass heavy but the sennheiser hd25s are also a popular choice. Or go in ear but if you're doing several several shows a day they're not that comfy unless you go for custom moulds (very expensive). Definitely go closed to avoid bleed into any mics though. Are you using Avioms? -
Edgar is probably my favourite soloist. Check out his recording of the Bottesini concerto, there's so many great players out there but none can touch him on that recording. It's on a completely different level! Think it may be on spotify.

Yet another clearout! La bella FL flats xl scale 5 string, 43-128 tapered B - bought to try on my MTD but that bass definitely prefers stainless rounds. Cut for the mtd headstock 2/3 config, they won't fit a Fender. Only on the bass a day - £20 La bella FL flats 4 string (43-104) - cut for Fender headstock, used but still years of life in them - SOLD Ernie Ball group 4 flats (40-95) - on a bass when I bought it but way too light for me, cut for Fender headstock, good condition - SOLD Rotosound trubass black nylon (65-115) - cut for fender headstock, very low tension despite heavy gauge, good condition - SOLD Gotoh 203 bridge - no screws (unless I can find them again!). Very solid fender style replacement but I definitely prefer the sound of the original bent tin one - SOLD All prices inc postage. Cheers, Chris

Sure I completely agree with the principle, anything that makes flying with a bass easier and less stressful is a very good thing. I just wonder why they didn't go all the way with the downsizing and make it very portable (like the Kolstein travel bass or the Eminence for example) rather than just chop the bottom half. Haven't played an Auray before but his normal basses are meant to be pretty tasty as far as new instruments go. I wonder how long it takes for it to settle down after refitting the neck and bridge.
I might be interested in this. Can you post a closeup picture of the crack in the neck? Would you be prepared to pack it up and ParcelForce it if I paid the delivery and insurance costs? Thanks, NS
Sure, I'll sort some pics out tomorrow. I have an old hardcase somewhere that I can send it in, though I'd prefer to meet in person if possible. Cheers, Chris

I've played one but to be honest didn't really see the point. It played ok, didn't have much acoustic volume or depth and just looked ugly. They're not that much smaller than a normal bass and the flightcase is still big and bulky. If you wanted a small touring bass you could find a far superior 1/2 size for that kind of money. That said, a lot of people seem to like them though.

Looking for double bass teacher in/around Leeds
chrkelly replied to gnasher1993's topic in Tutors Available
Hi guys, I'm looking for a double bass teacher based in/around Leeds. Although jazz is my passion, I want to learn to play classical music and specifically learn about arco technique. Does anyone know of any teachers? Cheers, AJ
Best bet would be to get in contact with one of the Opera North players. I'm sure the orchestra's admin would pass on a message for you.
