1. IME a 2x10" & 1x15" combo IS one of the BEST spkr combos U can get! 4 small gigs U can just take the 15"-or the 2x10"- I used a 1x15"EV for 13yrs with GREAT results. Then for bigger gigs take 'em both! Sound wise this combo- as stated above- IMHO- sounds better by far than a single 4x10. The 15" gives a WICKED old school thump & 10"s give U punchyness & modern snap( tho a 15" will give plenty of punch, snap too). But this set up IMHO- is Perfect 4 U. 1. would match PERFECTLY with the V4BH( V4BH & SVT15= basically an old B15-as used by J.Jamerson on Motwn recordings) 2. covers a LOT of sound spectrum/versatility of sound. 3. IS extremely portable. 4. when put together the 2 cabs really do become greater than "the sum of their parts"!!!! A single 2x10" is great, a single 1x15" is great, but comining 'em = BLISS!!!!!!! 5. VERSATILITY(again) but U can leave the 15 on the floor-or on a crate- pointing straight out, & angle the 2x10 up 2 yr ears to hear really well!!!! Without having to 'drown out' the others in band. I could go on!!! If I was U & they're a good price & condition- NO QUESTION- I'd grab 'em! -IF U like the sound!!!!!!!!! Good luck. Let me know how U go! Rod.
2. +1 to that re the Mark Bass LMII amp= really versatile-tiny, light, powerful, sounds great! 2 x Aguilar GS112 cabs= IMHO terrific small, lite weight BIG sounding rig. Then U could also get a real valve amp & a Berg NV610 & be done with it! ;-)
3. Save both -back & wallet & get a BErgantino NV610- Kills any 8x10 I've tried! IMHO ;-)
4. BANANAMAN- get the 2x10 & 1x15 AMPEGS CHRIS B. has 4 sale if they're a good price- hard to beat matching this head with these cabs-just with the 15" would be a killer OLD SCHOOL SOUND but the 2x10" would give a modern (& louder) option. IMHO!!!!!!!!
5. I used my V4BH in my big band-8 piece-soul/funk/etc- sounded GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! No PROBS with volume- opposite actually! HAd plenty- I only used it on about 1/2 vol. so NO dirt added either! Just sounded GREAT!!!!!SAT in the MIX BEAUTIFULLY!
6. Damn ..... I love 'em!
7. NEW reviews on the AMPEG V4BH with the BERG NV610-gigged! Just added!
8. Gee that looks like a lovely bass... I don't think ANY of the VINTAGE modifies series-except the orig ones- Jaco, white P, natural 70's Jazz, - have hit AUS. yet, but I was interested in the orig. mod vintage White P bass anyway- but yrs looks GREAT! Congrats & THANX for the review! Anything new to report since this review?
9. More added above -to orig. post Added -review on AMPEG V4BH.
10.
Manufacturers state minimum impedances for their amps but I was considering the sonic benefits (if any) at various impedances! More by luck than judgement my recent cab acquisition is 6 ohm (stick 6 speakers in a box and you can't get 4 or 8 ohm outputs).
My BERGANTINO NV610 IS 4 ohms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So is the Ampeg SVT610HLF I think???/
11.
I have to say, ive never liked Marshall bass amps - Ive tried a few in the past and they have always seemed to lack definition, hardly any Midrange and sounded very honky through my cab. Ive not tried some of the newer stuff, but the older ones I have tried have left me cold in the past. Im open minded though so ill happily try some newer ones if the chance comes up!
IMHO - U should TRY the ALL VALVE VBA400 it's a beast od an amp- & whever I've heard 'em-once live & a few times on dvd's -they always sounded GREAT!
12. AFAIK it'd sound great - I've not heard the Orange bass cabs tho I've heard they're good. If the price is OK & the weight, wheels etc- go 4 it! If not- keep looking- Schroeder cabs are LOUD cabs -bit $$$$ but even the 1210L(one 10" & 1 x 12"-neo's) is a LOUD amp & sounds FAR bigger than many 4x10's ..........check out Schroeder.com & I'm pretty sure there are dealers in UK!
13. I'll ALSO say that I agree with ACID-BASS in that U need to talk to the ochestra manager & find out what the NEEDS really are- While NOTHING can sound exactly like a acoustic Dbl bass U CAN get pretty closewith fretless(even fretted) playing with yr thumb, righ up near/on the neck area & rolling off a bit of trebles. If U have a DBL bass moddeller thingy- give it a try with the band... Shouldn't be about LOOKS U R RIGHT!

MARK BASS

LOvely Piece of playin' NATE!!! tasteful yet not OVERPLAYED like most bass solo stuff i've seen! I use a MArkBASS LMII in addition to my 2 tube amps & find it to be a lovely li'l amp- nicely uncoloured, yet versatile & punchy & loud!
15. I don't run a MArshall rig But was VERY close to it- the VBA400 all valve monster. I only got the Fender 300PRO as it went 8/4/2ohms -Marshall VBA400 4/2 ohm But it's meant to be A GREAT AMP!!! I've heard a couple B4-sounded GREAT! Lovely overdrive!!! TB'er "I got a MOHAWK" has one I think???
16. There --- I think I've finished the reviews for now - anyway!
17. Ohhh Ha Ha it IS to laugh!!!!!! Oh tell me when to stop!!!!! ;-) No - these two pices of gear have cured my GAS for a LONG time methinks! I'm gonna try & finish the review now.
18. Bananaman- what sorta cabs have U got at the mo'- just want to get a feel 4 what U got & may like!
19. I've used all types of amps in my 27 yrs of playing live in pubs & most of whats above I agree with. Cuppla things IMHO valve amps do NOT need anymore servicing than S.S. amps. As long as U put quality tubes in they should last as long as said above- 10 yrs... more depending on use! BUT IMHO U should have ANY regularly used amp serviced every few yrs-depending on use! & IME I've spent equally as much on my s.s. amps as I have on my tube amps over the last 27 yrs! IME( :-) sorry 4 all the IME 's etc... ) usually when a valve amp goes down -it's a tube/s when a s.s. amp goes down..... good guess!! & 4 me has been lotsa $$$$. Also- sure a poorly designed/made valve amp is gonna sound just-almost ;-) - as bad as a poor s.s. amp. Warm & fat sound only happens when the valve amp is nice, speakers are good & bass is good! IME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
20. 1stly The FENDER 300 PRO. 300w (6 x 6550 power amp tubes 3x 12 AX7 & 1 x 12AT7 Pre amp tubes) Switchable 8/4/2 ohms, 2 channel-one clean, one Overdrive-blendable, Onboard Dual band Compressor, 10 Band Graphic EQ. 75lbs This IS a BEAST of an amp! HEAPS of Headroom = LOUD x 10!!!!!!!!!!!! Can do an old school motown tone to a modern slap sound! Really is THAT versatile. The 2 chanel feature is THE greatest- Ch1. clean, Ch.2 has gain/overdrive, U can set the amount of overdrive U lke & then blend in clean ch.1 with it(or leave ch.1 out of it altogether) so U can ALWAYS have a clean bottom heavy sound in there with your overdrive= beautiful! Channels, Graphic & compression are all footswtchable(supplied) I usually run the channels at the same vol.( about 3-4)clean ch.1 for about 1/2 the stuff I play & use the blended ch.'s for 1/2. settings here are- ch.2 gain on about 6/10, chan.blend about 60% to ch.2(gained ch.)so blend control on 6( 10 = all ch.2 , 1=all ch.1) This gives me a nice bit of dirt , with a HUGE full, thick clean sound under it! LOVELY!!!!! BASS & TREB controls- to taste-usually bass 6, treb 5, Graphic EQ adjusted to give a slight mid Boost- turn off & on depending with f/sw- Compression -usually on depending on room- bass comp on 6, treb comp on 3, compression blend control on centr detent(5). MAster vol on about 5- Beleive me-even with the channel volumes on 3/10-the master on 5= LOUD enough for a 8 piece band with Horns! More to come.... BERGANTINO NV610 -6 x 10" sealed Speaker cab. This cab -I bought 2nd hand after owning a SVT410HLF for a couple of years- & it injuring me....damn heavy B....ch! The Berg is about 12lbs lighter at 98lbs & is 6" taller & 4 or 5'' thinner than the svt410hlf. It is 750w RMS & handles the 300PRO FAR better than the Ampeg did. The HLF 'farted out' at about 1/3- 1/2 vol. on the 300PRO!!! Haven't tried the Berg past 1/2 volume- just coz it's SO DAMN LOUD!-even in a big auditorium I was afraid of annoying the ppl in OTHER rooms of the complex when I turned the amp up to 1/2 way!!!!!! The BErg cab IMHO IS A SUPERB CAB! I've NEVER heard my bass sound SO CLEAR & ARTICULATE as well as sounding cool- not "Hi Fi" (there's NO TWEETER in this cab, but the speakers have been voiced to handle this) & still sounds ''VINTAGE" -if U want it to, but can easily sound modern with a quick adjust of the amp! My Keyboard player has said on virtually every gig I've used the Berg on- "I've never B4 heard EVERY note of yr bass..." When the Overdrive from the 300PRO is on this cab really shines-JUST sounds brutal! & if I use the BIG MUFF pi also/instead-it also sounds SO OLD SCHOOL - thick, solid OOOOOHHHH I lose adjectives(is that right???) I A/B'd the cab with a AMPEG SVT810E & IMO the BERG floored it!! SOunded deeper, more punchy, clearer ... just better also IMHO- AND OF COURSE its FAR lighter, easier to move(than the SVT410HLF & 810) & cheaper than the 810 Can't remember what the 410HLF cost me , but I think NEW they're approx. the same as a NV610!!!!!!!!! Believe me, I think-as they've said on Talkbass- the NV610 IS the SVT810 KILLER! AMPEG V4BH amp head. I thought I'd include this here as it sits atop the NV610 like it was made to!! Hmmmm????? I know the 'purists' will say this incarnation of the V4 is not a patch on the '70's models, but IMHO it ROCKS!!!!!! Don't be fooled by the back panel of the V4BH which states "tube compliment- 4 x 6L6GC, 1x12AX7, 1x 12AU7", it has another 2 tubes-1x 12AX7 & 1x12AU7 up inside & not able to be seen unless U either take it apart or shine a torch thru the breather holes & peer into the preamp section. It's 100w-tube watts- IME it's about as loud as the AMPEG SVT3PRO(450w s.s. amp) with my NV610 anyway. Also it's EASY 2 get the ''SWEET SPOT" in the output valves as it IS 100w U can crank it quite nicely! I'll add more after this weekend-as I'll be trying it with my BIG band at a gig with full PA support & 5-600 ppl! IMHO this amp has ALL the volume U need for onstage work-sure U need PA support-wgho doesn't at BIG stadiums, arenas etc...(perhaps the Fender 300PRO might get away with it...but yr ears wouldn't!!!!!!!! It sure has a sweet 'AMPEG' sound- not quite as crisp as the s.s. or Hybrid Ampegs such as the B2R/E ot SVT3 PRO-2 amps I've previously owned & liked(just needed VALVES powering NOT s.state!) but is unmistakebly AMPEG in sound, & just cranking it in my basement at home I got a LOVELY power tube overdrive at about 1/2 vol. getting sweeter as I turned it up more-LOVELY!! Also with the pre- GAIN control I got a nice pre-amp overdrive also- this of course at a lower volume-but NICE also! Will add more after this weekend! Well gigged this amp-AMPEG V4BH- with the BIG band using the Bergantino NV610 cab! WOW!!!!! ThIS AMP IS A BEAUTY!!!!!!! It just sits in the mix SO well!!!!!! HAd AMPLE Volume. I only had it on about 1/2, so had a fair bit to go B4 it even started OD-ing the tubes! Just a lovely full sound, that suited our music perfectly-we play all from 60's Aretha & James Brown, thru Parliament, '70's Disco to Beyonce etc.. So this amp had to cover all the bases!!!!! DID it with ease- nice slap sound as well as a ROCKING thump for old school stuff! Motown sound=beautiful! DAMN!!!!!!!!!!! Now I'm Gonna have to choose between the Fender 300PRO & the AMPEG V4BH to take to gigs(great choice to have I know) The FEnder has the channel blending options & SUCH a POWERFUL THICK sound, BUT the AMPEG is 1/2 the weight-& sounds GREAT too!!!!! We'll see!
21. Yep good thinking... & CONGRATS on getting a V4BH- nice amps IMHO. Keep an eye out - U may find the cab U R after & would even be a good idea-as U R on 2nd floor- to invest in a trolley- this will help save yr cabs rear from the stairs. keep us posted as 2 how U go!
22. IMHO -if going for the Aguilar go 4 the AG500 NOT the AG500SC.apparently it's nicer-not JUST for the extra channel & overdrive option! Also AFAIK-& from what I noticed when I A/B'd a 4 pro with my Fender 300PRO- the 4PRO isn't THAT loud-compared to some other 'bridged 1200w (or something like that) All I knew was-my 300PRO ATE it!!! BY MILES in the headroom stakes..... BUT U NEVER have to be THAT loud anyway...so -If U like the sound of the 4pro & it IS loud enough- can't see it NOT being loud enough for almost ANY use-stadiums-maybe not-close tho! ;-) - well then the 4 PRO is a LOVELY sounding amp from what I've heard. I only used one ONE day tho & it was primarily to A/B it with the 300PRO!!
