Timer starts "I'm milty today reviewing xxxxxxx by yyyyy" Plugs bass in "Yep the bass amp goes "boom" it sounds good/bad" Unplugs bass "I like it/don't like it" "Thanks for watching" Timer Ends
Lol, now you're on the same page as me!
 2.
Good ideas, but are such things really practical when the end result is usually viewed and - more importantly - heard on a PC with indifferent speakers, or even an audibly hopeless laptop or smartphone? I guess that big differences would be noticeable but surely the nuances would be completely lost?
In 80 seconds, i don't think there will even be much time for nuance
 3. He's really targeting a different demographic i think. His reviews are really good in the sense that it gives good technical information, but i don't think there's really any heart in it. Like, yes, everything he said is probably true, and it seems like he was reading from a script, neither are bad things, but it didn't have much personality, apart from when he played something. It gave me a good sense of the head and cab, but i found i was listening to review it myself (or is that just me?). Anyway, all that stuff is just personal preference, what he really didn't do was quick, snappy information, which is what the format of my new videos will be, all within a time limit, with a bit of Milty flair. I don't think there will be many high end guitars, basses or amps to review anytime soon anyway.
 4.
Check out Ed Freidlands (The Bass Whisperer) videos on youtube to find out how to do a really good video review.
OK!
 5.
May I ask who has given you the opportunity to do these reviews?
God No, a mate.
 6.
I like how people draw conclusion from stuff other than making instruments that differ from those of people who make instruments.
Are you referring to me? Because we have a problem if you are.
 7.
I think most would agree with you in all this, Milty, except the last phrase. Acoustic instrument makers definitely DO talk about tone woods, varnishes etc, maybe you'd see a lot more if this was an acoustic guitar forum. As an aside our sax player has a Selmer tenor sax from the '50s and will tell you all sorts of stories about the lacquer on Selmers of the time and how they got it wrong and refinished many saxes to maintain their high reputation for sound such was it's importance. The irony is that his sax is so old and well used that there is hardly any lacquer left on it and yet you could buy half a dozen expensive basses with it!
Yes, well i read quite a bit about acoustic instruments too, and i haven't seen too much of the tonewood talk going on, but maybe they just define it differently. Classical instruments are crazy expensive though. I wouldn't be surprised if you could get 4 or 5 Dingwalls or Foderas with it.
 8. I've come to the conclusion that tonewoods make such a small difference to the sound of an electric bass or guitar, that it's hardly even worth spending much time thinking about. Certain woods look good if they have a nice grain, but for me, that's as far as it goes, aesthetics. I really like wood. It's a beautiful material to make things from, and i've made plenty from it before, but in an electric instrument, it makes little difference, especially in the body. As in the OP, things to devote more time and effort in the choice of are Pickup/s, Preamp, strings and the material of the bridge and nut. Acoustic instruments are an entirely different ball game, where even the glue you use can change the sound. But acoustic instrument manufacturers are a lot less likely to talk about tonewoods.
 9.
I am looking for a cheap back up to my main gigging bass. Something around 100-120 quid. Ideally a p-bass. Ideas please? Lewis.
I always swear by a Korean made OLP, back-up or not. If you're going to go down that route, make sure to get a Korean one, and NOT a Chinese one. (The difference really is massive, trust me!) Really good examples of Korean OLP's have gone for around £140 recently, but expect to see them advertised around the £200 mark. Not a P bass, and likely out of your budget, but i do always like to point people towards them because of the sheer bang for the buck you get from them!
 10.
thats what i thought but spent the last day and a half on google trying to find something and have come up with nothing bar sticking the adhesive pad to the bass really dnt wanna do that so ill try this clamp and see the results at the weekend andy
Nick one off a webcam...
 11. These reviews are independent, which i neglected to mention. They are done on my own will and aren't commissioned or paid for by any company.
 12.
"has anybody got any products in mind that they would like reviewed?" The usual argument about strings springs to mind - maybe you could run a side-by-side comparison of different strings on the same bass, amp, etc. That might prove to be useful (if tedious to make). Similarly, a comparison of pre-amps and pickups in the same bass, etc, would be useful if more difficult and expensive to produce.
Great idea, but maybe a bit too much to cram in to 80 seconds? I'll see what i can do with that though!
I always find it interesting to compare high end instruments with cheaper ones using the same amps and settings. For example -- A MIM Jazz bass vs an AS jazz bass vs a Squier classic vibe vs a Sadowsky.
Yes, quite, only problem is getting my hands on high end instruments!
 13. Hey guys, I've been given the opportunity to do reviews on music and musical equipment in the near future. These will be both video and typed. But i'd like to ask you your opinions and thoughts. The format for the reviews will be a shortened down, condensed review, where you get the review, and no flim flam. I was thinking maybe rolling with about 80 seconds of review time. Any thoughts on that? Also, has anybody got any products in mind that they would like reviewed? And finally, does anybody have any suggestions or thoughts on how to improve my videos or reviewing style? How to refine it maybe? I hope the new reviews will be recorded in new surroundings. It's pretty exciting, and i can't wait to get in to it and show you all. Honestly, anything at all that you think might help, please do let me know. Cheers.
 14.
Am holding my breath, my other half's business is rather dependent on RM, there is discount with franking machine but the cost of RM is becoming significant. Following on from OP, If you are a small business that makes products h > 8cm what chance do you stand, even if product is 8 cm x 8 cm. Still, I am told the economy is good and we have avoided triple dip recession Pity no-one told our customers that.
You missed my point. I was saying people will still be willing to pay for the convenience of getting something delivered rather going out and buying it themselves.
 15.
I think all this is to make it seem more efficient for the sell-off.
Oh FFS, are they trying to get rid of RM now too?
 16.
looking to do this with my friends go pro at my bands next gig, anyone know or scene how to do this? i dnt wanna use the suction cup as i dnt trust it and dnt think it would fit, ive heard of someone using a capo but that sounds even more dodgy this is the look/view i want the camera to have. andy
You get clips for them i think, just hook it on to the headstock.
 17.
An excellent move by Royal Mail to support the economy. Well done in encouraging the return to the high street. These 'small and wholly neccesary' increase in charges will help stop that Internet and mail order selling fad. More likely competition will step up to the plate.
Don't hold your breath. I reckon people are still more willing to pay for convenience than save a few bob and go and pick it up themselves. And i think any business doing regular trade with RM will still get a good enough discount to continue with internet trading. It might drive a few more people back to high street shopping, but i wouldn't hold my breath, is all.
 18. I voted 2, but it was hard to say. might have been easier with a clean guitar sound.
 19.
I saw them on the "Best Disco in Town" tour a few years back. Omar Hakim on Drums and Jerry Barnes on Bass. Absolutely awesome. Picked a DVD of the tour in Poundland recently. Bargain.
Oh, how much was it?
 20.
Lead arrived and bass plugged in. Awesome!
PICTURES! VIDEOS! Or better yet, BOTH!
 21.
Chic are VERY much alive with Nile Rodgers being very active as the driving force. Follow him on twitter as he's incredibly engaging and the band seem to have a very full gig diary, particularly in Europe. They're playing in Moseley in Birmingham on 7th July. Going. Stoked. Can't. Wait. Oh. No. lol T
Must see them when they are back in Belfast at some point then
 22.
I love everthing Chic I really miss that group.
I think they're still a group... I think they played in Belfast not that long ago.
 23.
We must not forget Tony Thompson their long time drummer who was a integral part of their sound Another lost way way to soon
Drummers are often under-rated by us in the electric string community.
 24.
The album cest chic has a track called savoir fayre which has some beautiful guitar work on it.
I'm going to listen to more of his work. And i agree about the bass too. Groove is just what electric bass is for. If you're going to play straight eigths with no groove, don't call yourself a bassist
 25.
I know we had a thread about the Nile Rodgers programme on BBC4, but I was gobsmacked all over again by Bernard Edwards' bass parts. Those two guys have got to be the best guitar/bass rhythm section ever.
I'm learning some of his chords on guitar. It's amazing how many songs Nile's played on! His chords are genius too. They sing, they aren't just guitar chords, they actually sing.
