New bass pickups - Anybody got info on these?
MiltyG565 replied to MiltyG565's topic in Bass Guitars
what's the difference in a single coil and soapbar though? -
Slinky Cobalt through-body - sensible or not?
MiltyG565 replied to smoke's topic in Accessories and Misc
It's maybe just a dud string. Does your bridge had round saddles, or ones that have a bit of a point? -
Aguilar are releasing a couple of new pickups, but I think i'm missing something. It says these are jazz singles in a soapbar size. So, they've put regular single coils in a bigger case? I definitely think I'm missing something. http://www.aguilaramp.com/products_pickups_AGSS.htm
No worries Milty, happy to help! As Confucius said, "we're all noobs on the path to attaining enlightenment..."
Ha!
Getting very close now.....
I'll have mine in tomorrow at some stage
And now I've just been lumped with a VAT bill and customs handling charge for £25 Kidding
Haha
I have aquired an ignore list to boot! Sorry for being a catalyst to the moaning everyone. I didn't add to the facts of the thread, just got caught up with some condescending comments.
I wasn't being condescending. Although I could so easily be condescending when replying to this comment, but I won't, it's not exactly my style to be unnecessarily rude or aggressive.
Thanks for the thread synopsis. It doesn't change the fact that inaccuracies were being bandied about and I felt like sticking my oar in because they annoy me. Also, you can apply my comment to the entirety of the forum if you like and not just this thread - the same slack definitions and approximations are bandied about every time the subject is brought up. There shouldn't need to be ANY debate about it, the rules are there in black and white. That's my point.
You're right, there shouldn't be any debate. I wasn't exactly sure of the figures and rates, which is why I didn't state any. I also couldn't be bothered much to go hunting for the numbers, since that really wasn't what I was talking about anyway.
I'm not sure I've ever unsubscribed to a thread I started before. Well, there's a first time for everything.
All things considered mate, it's really not that bad. Nobody has called anybody a whore, pole dancer or taxi driver for being entertaining and musical, so it gets a thumbs up from me
I am certain there is way to get these strings to the U.K at a very reasonable price .
BassChat didn't used to be like this... You used to only be able to pay using paypal...
Just caught the end of this thread and it continues to astound me how much inaccurate (or half true) information is still peddled about whenever the subject of importing from outside the EU comes up. The guides are there, and granted the HMRC's website isn't the most friendly out there, but everything one would ever need to know is probably here: http://customs.hmrc....tyType=document In this case, see section 3.1. I realise that it's pretty moot as we are discussing the sending of commercial goods in this particular thread (and thus carriage costs are factored into the total for VAT calculation purposes, no ifs or buts), but I'm fed up of the needless debate about something that's set in stone.
hmm, I don't think it was a "We need to change this" kind of thing, more of an "Oh no, I didn't want to pay that much", which then became a bit of a "Is there a cheaper way to get them?" kind of thing. There wasn't really much debate over the duty/VAT thing I don't think.
One may certainly possess the ability to say whatever one wants. But the right to do so is nowhere enshrined in law. In the sense that rights are protected freedoms, there is no blanket protection, merely a list - if you like - of things one may not say or which may not be said in a particular way. Every so often, they add to the list. Conventionally, freedom of speech means the right to promote certain political or social opinions without the fear of the secret police slinging one into a torture chamber. Here on BC, however, it is held by some to be the freedom to say any damn stupid, rude or 'abrasive' thing then hide behind a half-comprehended phrase one heard in a pub. In any event, this whole 'freedom' thing is drastically over-rated and usually comes up in connexion with silly things like reheated internet spats and - er - unsanctioned invasions of Mid-Eastern countries. In any event, Mr P has popped his head back up and we should treat him like any other member; that is, with politeness, humour and not too much attention to his daily movements, breakfast cereal of choice etc. It could get a bit wearing for him.
I completely agree. You can still say those things, which you aren't supposed to say, if you want, much like you can steal a TV from somebodies house, if you want. I'm not saying it's a good or right thing to do, and most laws being sensible and good for the majority, the people who break them just be dealt with. I also agree that we shouldn't give Guy too much scrutiny. He's a bassist, we are bassists, and that's the level we are all working at, so let's treat everybody with dignity, and respect, regardless of experience, fame, or financial worth.
Here is my bit of freedom of speech. Anyone remember the good old days when we used to talk about all aspects of PLAYING THE BASS on here.
This is the introductions forum. Most of these threads are just kind of "Hello, welcome, that's a nice bass you have". Anyway, I think I might go to sleep now and give my keyboard a break.
So if the BNP (other political parties are available, thankfully) get a platform in a public place they can say whatever they want. For crying out loud. Milty is just you alays want the last word? Meanwhile, WELCOME GUY, brilliant to have you on Basschat. (Sorry icastle not aimed at you)
Anybody can say what they want. It might be illegal, but they can still say it. If they are arrested and go to trial because of what they said, they can use their words again to try and get out of it. Nobody can ever mandate that there are things you can't say.
-
We don't
You mean that you don't have the power to say whatever you want? I certainly do.
He can't get them any other way than paying the money.
Yes, but they offer them to all their suppliers in the UK. Find a supplier near you, and ask them to get a set in. Done. Simples. Bound to save on the postage at least.
Don't forget the 90% of the matter in the universe that is currently unobservable - dark matter. I think it's actually Marmite.
Lol. Don't forget that all matter that is observable could be the size of a sugar cube if we got rid of all the space.

Since Leo Fender was an electrical engineer, and not a guitar player or luthier, I wonder who designed the neck profiles and body shapes of his instruments, or did he just build something he liked, then refine it when players gave their criticisms?
Are you trolling me?
Nope, I'm playing devils advocate to a certain extent though. A penny saved is a penny earned is a great philosophy. If there was some way to get the thing that you want for less money, why would you spend more than you have to? Basically, what you said was "You want them, just buy them, you probably have a few grands worth of gear", which is a pretty poor argument in my book. It's a bit like only getting one quote on new windows for your house, or not negotiating a deal for it. The house is worth a lot more than the glazing, so why not just pay whatever they want you to?
I saw some of the absolutely hateful results of freedom of speech with some extreme racist/ religious vitriol on Faecesbook in the aftermath of the Boston bombings (both "sides"). With freedom of speech comes responsibility and hopefully a little humility and sensitivity.
Of course it does, and I have said that, but we still have the right to say whatever we want. The consequences of that are another matter.
What?
Oh, you would get along so well with Neephid, who lists hating censorship as one of his interests This is one hell of an intro thread
^ Ah ok, gotcha In which case this video will help:
Sorry, I think I was on my way to bed when I saw this. Thanks for helping, Paul, I really appreciate it I'm such a n00b, it should be criminal.
I'd suggest you check the T&Cs of the site again Milty
We all have the right to freedom of speech, do we not? Nothing can take that away from us. But, that doesn't mean you should always exercise that right to it's fullest extent, and why we need to self-edit to keep things moving along in a friendly way.
-
I'm not upset, and I won't lose any sleep either - but I think some people need to engage their brain a bit more before hitting the "post" button. None of us are perfect, but some people seem to think that it is their right to say exactly what they want to say - and (to quote Tom Petty) damn the torpedoes.
It is their right to say exactly what they want, it's everyones right, and that's why self editing is important, especially when what you want to say could be seen as libel, defamation or other breaches of the law.
He's choosing not to buy his favourite strings and to buy ones that he doesn't like as much because of a $12 + import duty + vat shipping charge. He can't get the strings without paying this small extra amount of money. That's not economy, that's a compromise. My point: in the context of all the other money you spend on this hobby, in context of the good times we have with this hobby, for that small amount of money just buy the strings you want.
Who's to say that he can afford the extra money, or even deems the strings worth the extra money? A lot of my favourite things are inexpensive, but if there was a sudden rise in price of them, I wouldn't get it. Might be my favourite, but that doesn't mean they are worth any amount of money. Buying a slightly cheaper, almost identical set of strings isn't really a compromise, just a way to get the same sound for less money, which is good sense.
Of course. How it all happened leaves a nasty taste, too. It should have been laid to rest ages ago.
Yes, a proper apology could have seen it done with. anyway... Fancy a jam, Guy?
To be fair, there are seventeen gazillion members - you're generally only going to notice those who are regulars or have a profile for some other reason. It would be a shame if GP were to close the door on BC. I wouldn't blame him, though.
Yes, but that's my point. There are some people on this site who, to be polite, I could only describe as abrasive, but I find in general, the positives of this site outweigh whatever run-ins I have with those people. I wouldn't blame him either. It's not like he needs this site, he's done well enough without it for plenty long. I would say that anybody who is that upset about him revoking membership from himself is probably only upset because of either his status, or the information and help he could provide to people here. I don't think he's been around enough to have made many friends on here. I wouldn't want to be him in that relationship. My advice is always free, and I give it willingly, but it's a rare occasion when anybody actually asks for it. I dare say plenty would be looking Guy's advice a lot of the time. Whether he returns or not, that's his choice, and it's fine by me. I'll not lose sleep over it.
Actually we see are fair amount "where is..." type threads
Usually for regular contributors though.

Were you guys this upset when when non-famous members decided to not return? Haven't seen Evil Undead around for a while, have you? He's a big boy. If he decides it worth sticking around, he will. If he decides it's not worth it, he won't return. It's his prerogative.
