1. Was gutted to hear this, will head down in the next few days to say my goodbyes. Real loss, sad times.
  2. I've bought an RH450 + 2 x RS210's from Darren at Bass Merchant, also my old GK rig with both RBH & Neo cabs, never had an issue turning up the volume, even plugged me into a blacksmith so I could AB the 750 against it at volumes that Thor god of thunder would be proud of, knowing that I wasn't gonna buy one in a thousand years. It's a great showroom with some beautiful basses hanging around the place and Darren is more than happy to let you play with his toys.
  3.
I wrote a blog post about this, after being asked loads of questions about Endorsements - it's 5 or 6 years old, but pretty much still makes sense... the question of who's endorsing who is a really good one - ideally it's a two way thing. You play the gear you love, and the company - grateful for the exposure and support - reciprocate with the kind of support they can offer, with cheaper equipment, gear shipped to venues, loaner gear, adverts (which are definitely a bonus for both parties)... Anyway, here's the post, hope it's of some use: http://www.stevelawson.net/2006/10/how_music_gear_/ Steve
Really enjoyed this post. Really interesting to get your insight on the subject and I like your perspective on the relationship between artist & company.
  4. On this forum along with many others I occasionally lurk on, I see people proudly displaying their endorsement deals in the signatures of their posts. I’m curious how some of you perceive your/others endorsement deals based on the wording of their signatures and discussions regarding gear/endorsements; “Endorsed by...” “Proud [product] endorsee” It is my understanding that an Endorser is the person/people giving an endorsement and the Endorsee is the person/people receiving it. So by this definition, is it the perception of those who make claims similar to the above that they feel they are the ones being endorsed by the manufacturers (“We Company X feel compelled to endorse the abilities of Musician Y”) or is there simply confusion over which role belongs to whom regarding endorsement deals? When Company X gives Rockstar A free or discounted gear the obvious benefit for the company is the visibility that Rockstar A can give to their product and the potential for increased sales of products to those who idolise/want to emulate Rockstar A. The benefits to the company are apparent, however the benefits to the artist are negligible. I remember in Flea’s Adventures in Spontaneous Jamming & Techniques DVD with River Phoenix he talked about the irony that the only musicians that got free stuff were those whose financial means allowed them to buy whatever they wanted anyway. The power in this dynamic is with the musician - Eddie Van Halen could use any guitar he wants but he’s chosen to use Charvel, Kramer, Peavey, EBMM, Fender etc, and his endorsement of their products adds value to their brand. “Eddie Van Halen proudly endorses Fender guitars and EVH 5150 amplifiers” “[Rockstar A] proud [product] endorser” “Gibson guitars are endorsed by...” When Company X gives Session Guy A free/discounted gear, the benefits are not as obvious as with Rockstar A. Could it be argued that an endorsement deal could benefit Session Guy A in ways in addition to free/discounted gear? Does an endorsement deal carry sufficient kudos to raise the profile of a lower profile musician sufficiently to justify their perception of themselves as an endorsee rather than an endorser? Who holds the power, the manufacturers or the musicians? Is it financially viable to endorse lower profile artists? And are you guys and girls endorsers or endorsees? Discuss.
  5. I've been experiencing these same issues for a while now, but only whilst using Google Chrome, the site runs perfectly for me with IE9, I've not tried Firefox or Safari. So it may be a browser related problem?
  6. Bought my Bongo from The Gallery in early 2010. It was new old stock, an HS 4 in Stealth Black with rosewood (rather than the new ebony fretboard). Traded my Ampeg Dan Armstrong against it, which had spent it's whole life tucked away in a case. I appreciate it's not everyone's cup of tea, with it's unusual styling, I'd equate it as the bass equivalent of a Parker guitar and I must concede that its aesthetics did slow my decision to buy one, however it's never short of comments and questions at gigs. I've had a lot of fun playing with the pickup blend and I like it, subtle rolling from the humbucker through to the singlecoil really alters the dynamic of the tone & I've found I can get some good approximations of allot of different basses using it, but I'm not really fussed about approximating something else, I'm still in love with the flat bongo tone with a little bit of bass rolled on. The neck plays itself and when noodling I often find myself playing around the top frets which is something that rarely happens with me on other basses. This along with my TC gear has cured my acquisition problem and aside from new strings & a couple of jack leads & cables I haven't bought anything in well over a year. I now often gig with only the Bongo and guiltily leave the Stingray I lusted after for over a decade residing in its case back home, my Lakland JO now has a new home due to the neglect it suffered as a result of the Bongo. It's not for everyone, but to me that adds to its charm, I feel like I'm part of a secret club, whose members smugly nod to each other knowingly whilst everyone else raves about their P Basses and I couldn't be happier. 7.
that guy form pendulum was using a warwick robert trujio sig i think. i thought that was pretty cool
The Trujillo signature comes with a one piece bridge & detailing at the 12th fret, also the pups are black. The Pendulum bassist was using a Stage II Chrome Ender like Jamiroquai era Stu Zender played, with Warwick 2 piece bridge and chrome pups.
  8. Agree with all the above. The Gallery is the best place in London. I bought my Bongo Stealth from them a couple years ago, great service & great price, amazing selection of stock.
  9. Bass player released this statement.
I’m the bass player & you guys deserve an explanation. With the late start, we had to get on stage & start playing right away. No time to check exact tuning, you just have to trust your crew & play blind. Couldn’t hear much of anything, bad sound problems. No rescue, onstage no one else could hear what was going on either. By the time I could do something about it, it was our last song. f***ed up. Sorry to everyone who’s mad about it, trust me, I’m pissed too. Will be sorting it out accordingly. – Regina Zernay
Ipswich Music Day
Yes, I'm looking forward to hearing 80*2*90 for the first time, I've chatted to various members of the band and they're all good guys. the B Goodes are a great band and Underline The Sky are playing one of the other stages a bit later on - Chiron has been known to post here in the past. It's all looking good. Top weekend for us as we have The Pickerel in Stowmarket on Friday night too - that's always a good gig with a nice group of people.
I know Chiron & Hicksy from UTS quite well, they're good guys, they're playing the ICR/CSV stage which my band was on last year. Really looking forward to it. First gig we've played since taking a writing break in March.

    Ipswich Music Day
I'm looking forward to this too. My band Crossover will be playing the Town 102 Stage at 1.00pm. See you there, Lloydwt!
Cool I'll make sure to be at the Town 102 stage for 1pm. My friend Jen's band 80*2*90 are following you on the Town 102 stage followed by The B. Goodes who are great (Jay their bassist is a brilliant player), so I think I'll be around that stage for quite a while. Gutted I'm clashing with Saltdog as I haven't seen them for a couple of years and they always put on a great show.
Aright Lloyd, how is it going? I'll be there, my band Hallow wanted to play there this year but were told we missed the slot to apply. Luke
Know how you feel Luke, my last band managed to miss the boat in 2009, the council have no sway when it comes to deadlines. Look forward to seeing you down there. Perhaps we could have a bit of a basschat meetup if there are gonna be a few faces about?

    Ipswich Music Day
I've seen you guys in Ipswich before, loved it! I think my brother was in a band with Karnel before ...I'll see ya there!
Thanks Duarte, glad you enjoyed it. What band was your brother in? Carnell's other project at the moment is Pistols & Vultures who are doing pretty well for themselves, we borrow their drummer & guitarist for gigs when ours can't make it. Catch you down there :-)

    Ipswich Music Day

We were asked to play this year, as we played last year to a good reception. We gig allot in and around Ipswich and as Legion says it helps to know people on the organising committee, if you get a few gigs at McGinty's (Dave or Veronica) or The Steamboat Tavern (Val) that should put you on peoples radar locally. If you get an application in early enough to Ip-Art through their website that will stand you in good stead for making the lineup. Hope to see you there in 2012. Ipswich Music Day

Really good 1 day music festival, if you're local to it you're probably already aware. It's free and there are some great local bands. My band Millionaires by Morning will be playing the Attitude stage at 7pm.
  15. My wifey bass, White/Maple, MM 'Ray 4.
  16. If you still have the 210 when I'm back from Spain (this time next month), I'd be very interested as I wanted another RS210 before festival season.
  17. Hehe each to their own, I tend to stick to standard finish Slinky's and monochromatic basses whilst hiding at the back of the stage. I'm playing Ipswich Music Day in Christchurch Park on July 3rd with my band Millionaires by Morning, we're headlining the "Attitude" stage, you can mock me for my dull gear if you're free
  18. Caught your set, I know your drummer Linda. Enjoyed it, but was hypnotised by the colour of your strings. :-)
  19.
Surely it's the frequency range that determines if an instrument is in the bass register or not, rather than scale length or number of strings? So a baritone guitar would have a lower range than a piccolo bass but would be classed as a guitar & a piccolo bass would be a bass even though it's in a higher register? I have no idea why & to be honest I'm not sure I really care.
A piccolo bass is strung with bass strings (piccolo sets are thinner than a standard set, but allot thicker than guitar strings), this gives the instrument the tonal qualities of a bass which is distinguishable from a guitar. Another way of looking at it - The flugelhorn is in the same register as the trumpet and is fingered the same way, but is distinguishable from the trumpet by its tonal qualities. But I'd also concede that if a guitar luthier had conceived a 4 string 30-34 inch scale baritone guitar using larger gauge strings, we may well be calling it something different again.
  20.
i have been meaning to learn this for the last few years, tried a few times but gave up quite quickly might go back to it tonight
It took me forever to get it, a couple of my mates wanted to cover this & Curse of Castle Dragon, picked up Castle Dragon in an hour or so and just struggled with this forever. Ended up learning it via a Paul Gilbert instructional video on youtube, but like I said before, the tapping is beyond me.
  21. Todd Rundgren - Can We Still Be Friends
  22. Scarified by Paul Gilbert / Racer X and I can still only do the tapping part at half speed.
  23. Nice post & good to hear some info from a source other than TC. Think I'll stick with my 450 for the time being.
  24. Got the HS version of the Bongo Stealth, it's my main gigging bass along with my Stingray, beautiful guitar, beautiful tone, but a completely different beast to the 'Ray. I'd say keep it, but it's your call fella! Good luck with the sale :-)
