1. Free bump for the best thread title of the week !
2. What ??? no-one wants this. A free bump from me. These are the best bass OD pedals on the planet.
3. Emailed the makers and their answer was ..... ...... The Parallel output on the M80 is a dry signal output. Let us know if you have any more questions.
4. For sale is my cheapie Wesley Cougar bass in metallic sonic blue with white perloid pickguard. It's the shape of a Jaguar but with two Wilkinson stingray-type humbuckers (both wired as single coils at the moment but easy, peasy to change). Vol knob for each pickup and a master tone. A few small dents but overall still in really nice condition. No buckle rash. Plays stupidly nicely for such a cheap bass. The (chunky) neck really is a peach. A very cool looking bass too ! Had this a couple of years. My daughter learnt on it, but it just doesn't get played anymore as I have some yummier basses these days. Can't see the point of holding on to it when someone else could get some good use out of it. Pickup from the Southampton area for £70, or £85 posted within mainland UK
5. I am considering getting on of these, but I am unsure about the affected/unaffected state of the various outputs. The manual is not helpful. What I want is is to be able to send an effected signal to the PA via the XLR output, and a dry unaffected signal to my amp. Is the parallel output next to the input jack a wet or dry output ?
6. Bump. Will be away from home as of tomorrow (thurs) until tues next week, so will be unable to ship in that period, but will still have occasional internet access for any questions etc.
7. [sup]Price for a sale ?[/sup]
8.
BBs are totally epic and nothing else comes close. I know a few people who don't have one and their lives are meaningless and empty; sure, they're better musicians than me but they cry themselves to sleep every night and this could be easily remedied if they just swapped their F***ers for a Big Bad Yammy ;-)
Sean, looking at your sig, you are obviously a big fan of the BB. What's your take on the difference between the different series ? worth the extra money over the 424 ?
9.
I'm glad they're a bit uncool - ubelievable value for money with the prices as low as they are.
It's true. Makes them a real bargain for those "in the know".
10. Spent a fun 2 hours in Nevada Music, Portsmouth yesterday. Simply trying out loads of basses. I'm generally a J bass type of guy, but played various Jazzes, MIA and MIM (how is it every MIM Fender I play in shops is set up like sh1t !), Geddy Lee jazz (neck too slim for me), the Schecter Stargazer (bland and boring), a couple of nice Ibanezes (SR500 and another more expensive one, with Bartolinis I think - both well made but generic in tone), a used Spector Rebop (bit dull TBH), a Yammy TRB1104 (beautifully made but again but just not exciting). Oh, and probably others too. Lastly, on a whim, I picked up a BB424X, as I'd never played one before. Even though it was just below my expected price range. The moment I started playing through the ABM500 combo I was using, I was blown away by the punch, tone and playability. There was a punch and attack that none of the others had. Instantly, it was exactly what I was looking for in a bass tone. I couldn't believe it, for such a reasonably priced bass. I owned a PJ configuration Squier a while ago, but it didn't really hit the spot, like this Yammy. Would have bought it there and then, as it was discounted pretty heavily too. However, the nut slots were too shallow and the first few frets played sharp. The rest of the bass, and the neck were perfect but I was not prepared to buy the bass in that condition. Pointed this out, but the manager was not interested in sorting it out at all. Andy, their bass guy, was very helpful, but ultimately it comes down to the manager to make decisions about any tech work that needs to be done to guitars before they are sold. So, anyway, they've ended up with losing a sale and I shall order from somewhere else today ... getting the colour I really want too ... which is the white BB424X. Just thought I'd remind folks what a great, great bass the BB424 is. Strangely the bass guy at Nevada says they can hardly give them away. No-one even seems to try them out.
11. After a very brief, yet unsuccessful flirtation with a 5 string, I have realised beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am a 4 string player for life ! Bought recently from Pete (thor), this bass is in very good condition indeed. A few minor scratches, buckle rash, dings and scuffs, although nothing specifically worth mentioning except the ding on the headstock, shown in the photo, which is by far the worst knock. Just a typical gigged, but well looked after, bass. Fully "MOT'ed" and set up now, and a scratchy pot changed. Plays really nicely. Just wish it didn't have that damned 5th string which keeps getting in the way ! Comes with Schaller-style straplocks and a Warwick gigbag. Sorry no trades.. £275 posted within mainland UK, or £260 collected from me in the Southampton area. Contact me for a quote if you need shipping to Europe. 12.
I tried copying his settings but couldn't recreate that wall of sound that he got.
Yup "wall of sound" is going to involve overdrive of some kind IMO. I've not played one but from all accounts your Darkglass should do the trick nicely.
13. Diff pre-amp valves have different sonic qualities, and the ones that came with the amp are probably farily cheapo. But they do tend to last for many, many years. A failure usually comes as a sudden loss of sound or "motorboating" or a high pitched squeal. All of which you will notice instantly. if you like the tone, there's no need to change pre-amp valves, unless you want to try different valves with different sonic qualities.
14.
I don't have a problem with cutting through the mix or volume, If I cut out a lot of the sub 100Hz I can easily drown out everyone else but the sound is too thin for what I need
Sounds to me like you don't have a volume or frequency issue, but maybe just a too clean a sound issue. Very clean bass tones can sound very thin indeed in a one guitar rock band situation. Adding some overdriven harmonics with a pedal may well be what you are needing. Fattens the sound up no end. i like the EBS Multidrive for this.
15. Bought a bass from Pete. In better condition than he admitted to (the bass that is). Easy, easy guy to deal with. Thanks mate !
16. Ha, well I'm as fickle as a fairy !!! THe online dealer I'd ordered the Squier VM with on thurs couldn't seem to be bothered to actually dispatch the bass yesterday (fri), so I have cancelled the order, as I was so umming and ahhing about the bass anyway. And I have agreed to buy Pete's (thor's) Spector Legend. He lives fairly close,. so I'll pick it up this evening. Must admit, I "feel" a lot better about it. No doubts or worries. It the five doesn't work out for me, then I won't lose much selling it on again, and the quality of the Spector re-assures me too. Can't wait to try it out !
17. Thanks for all your input. In the end I have continued with my order for the Squier VM. I do love the Jazz sound, and I love growl and mids, so I'm hoping this will get me where I want to go. I did worry also that the Spector would maybe sound a bit "modern" for me. The Squier VM V seems to have good compromise string spacing. Nut is 47.6mm. string spacing at the bridge is somewhere around 17.5mm. I'm an experienced guitar player , so my left hand won't be an issue. Just wanted to give my right hand finger some room to "play" in. Valhalalf, I did see y our sale, and was tempted. There does seem to be a lot for love for the deluxe Jazz V 's on the web. It being active though and also the rather large slab that is the fretboard put me off in the end. Good luck with the sale. Someone's going to get a cracker. As for the VM jazz V, I will report back once I receive it. THere actually seems fairly minimal info on the web about them. The couple of Youtube vids on them are very complementary, and as far as one can tell they sound good. I'm going to use it as a tester into the world of 5's really. If I really get on with it, I will probably spring for a really nice 5 string sometime later in the year .
18. Bump from me. I have one of these exact cabs. Best cab I've ever played in a band context.
19. A used EBS Multidrive for outstanding OD and dirt noises. Or save up aother £30 and spring for a Rothwell Love Squeeze (prob need to buy new as people who buy these don't sell them). I guarantee he will never need another compressor.
