1. The ABM is certainly much more flexible tonally than the OBT. You'll certainly get an uber bassy, scooped sound or a mid-heavy vintage sound, or anything inbetween if you set it up right. And I'll say from the outset that I'm a big fan of the ABM. Personally (owning the EVO III), I think the sub harmonics thing is just a gimic. I would never consider using it in the real world. As for the volume issue, it's certainly an amp that can appear to have volume issues if you don't use it as Ashdown intend. I was playing guitar in a band a few years back and the bassist had an ABM500, EVO II I think. He always had problems with volume, but didn't actually understand how the amp worked. So, in hindsight, I now see that he was the problem, not the amp. There are a number of ways in which you can knock your volume with the ABM. Firstly, you have to set the input gain appropriately to get a decent signal into the amp. I believe a lot of folks are much too conservative when setting this. Next, how you set the EQ can have a MASSIVE effect on volume. I would definately recommend adding frequencies to taste, rather than reducing them. Next, the onboard comprpessor --- simples ... don't use it. It's cr@p and kills a lot of volume. My EVO III, when set up properly, is at least as loud as the little Mark III and GK 700RB II that I have owned. Through a reasonably sensitive 4 ohm 4x10 having the master on noon is pretty deafening.
  2. SOLD Immaculate Rothwell Love Squeeze compressor. Owned from new by me. Bought about 3 months ago. Comes with original box, instructions, sticker etc etc. Simply the best "compressor for those who don't like compressors". Just as good with bass or guitar. I simply don't really need a dedicated compressor though, as I play with some OD/dirt at all times, and this gives me the compression I need. So yours for £95 posted within mainland UK. 3. PM's all replied to. Mastotron and Oxfuzz are SOLD !!!!

  5. The Barefaced site doesn't seem to mention a "Big One". What are the specs ? especially speaker/tweeter config and weight ? Oh, and course ohmage ? cheers.

Mine was £1,200 including postage.
Thanks for that Bert !
  7.
Handwiring itself isn't a plus, because someone can still do a rubbish job by hand.
Absolutely true, and I have done many, many rubbish handwiring jobs in my time ! incredibly, they generally seemed to turn out pretty well, just looked atrocious !
  8.
That is a PCB in the middle. Nothing wrong with a PCB done right, but its totally there.
OK, missed that. My eyesight plus low res pictures don't go together well ! And I agree, there's nothing inherently wrong with PCB done right. Proper industrial/spacecraft-grade stuff is just as reliable as any handwiring. It's just that hand-wiring is so much easier for idiots like me to mend and fiddle with, compared with PCB. My soldering is always at risk of wrecking PCBs ! On another note where can you buy these amps, and roughly how much are they ? The Weber/Mywatt website doesn't help at all with these questions. Nor does my googling. I really miss fiddling with my tube guitar amps, now that I'm all bass these days.
  9. Yup, looks neat and tidy. All "decent" handwired construction. Not a PCB in sight. chassis-mounted valve bases. All as it should be !! Very nice indeed.
  10. If the cab sale falls through, by any chance, I'll take it for 300 smackeroonies.
  11. Had a Goliath III 4x10 for a short while. SOunded great on it's own but just didn't gel nicely with the band. I think it was a bit "polite" in the mids for my tastes. Dominated in the low frequecies without cutting through somehow. Oh, plenty of brightness also. Anyone who slaps would love it. I like Schroeder cabs if that gives any clues as to what I want from a cab (punchy, dominating , grunty mids with present, but not overly excessive, lows), which is a million miles from what the SWR cab was up to. Oh, the SWR also weighed only slightly less than my car.
  12.
Had a play of a couple of these when I was looking for a bass, fantastic quality and a great feel for the money. Good colour too
All true, thanks for the bump !
  13. Just bought a pedal from Ian. All went excellently. Pedal was exactly as described ! Thanks Ian !
  14.
http://www.zcatpedal...910290108414IHj This one seems good and cheap.
Good find ! Just contacted them about shipping costs, which would be 7 euros to the UK.
  15.
Growl control? You mean boost? The controls are a little daunting on the RB series but once you get used to them (or get them explained) they're easy as pie.
Yes, exactly. I do mean the "boost" control. Got confused, as everyone seems to describe what it does as the GK "growl".
  16. I'm tempted too, but no, no no, I have enough OD's already !!!
  17.
I really need to make a demo video of my amps, there's lots of people that ask about them (and GKs in general) and it's a pain to find decent videos because they're not that common.
Very true, especially the "growl" control. When looking, a while back, I could find nothing at all showing what the growl control does. had to buy a GK to find out !
  18. Just to add my experience of the RS112 ... It has plenty of bottom end, and plenty of sparkle too. Just don't expect too much in the way of nice chewy mids out of it.
  19. To the OP ... I'm really surprised that you are considering completely changing your amp merely to add grit. If you like your amp's clean tone, and the EQ centres are to your taste then pedals are absolutely the way to go for adding any number of different types of grit/dirt. Of the amps you mentioned being interested in, I have owned all except the Harkte. Of the others, the Ashdown ABM is absolutely superior in a rock music context, IMO. It does have it's valve pre, and will give one option for type of grit but, IMO, pedals will be more flexible, tweakable and easily changeable if they are not what you are looking for. I'd spend a day on youtube listening to pedal demos. Some to start with ... ... EBS Multidrive Xotic BB bass pre-amp Ashdown James Lomenzo hyperdrive thingy

    I love my BB414

Are they the same pickups on the 414 as the 424 ? Love, love, love my 424X (vintage white). Nothing Fender does, sounds as good for me. There's a punch and clarity with the 424's that I have not heard from any Fender as yet, and yes, that P pickup is a beat !!. Also plays as nicely as most USA Fenders too.
  21. Hardly used Bass Colleciton Jive jazz bass, in Islington blue. About 4 months old. As many of you may know, I have been rotating a lot of gear to completely refresh my rig in recent months. I thought I had found "the one" in this Jazz, but ultimately have fallen in love with a Yamaha bass. I played a shedload of Squier Jazzes before finding this jazz and this Bass Collection blows them all away IMO. Better playability, better tonal string to string balance, nicer overall tone (less nasal, and more refined). Simply feels and sounds like a higher quality instrument. And of course the lovely colours they come in. Reviews of these basses also seem to be very complimentary. Played this one in the shop and it was one of those I just had to buy, it sounded and felt so good. Financially, though, I cannot justify keeping it. I know I will only play the Yamaha as I am pretty much a "one bass sort of guy". Anyway, enough of the sales talk. it's a standard Jive. 34" scale, standard jazz bits and bobs, with a "vintage 60's profile" neck. Plays really, really nicely. The body and neck are unmarked as far as I can tell. No dings, no buckle rash, no scratches. Even still has the clear plastic still on the pickguard. Only damage on the bass are two dings on the end of the headstock, both of which are invisible from the front view. The one on the very, very end is very, very minimal. The pics show them pretty clearly anyway. WIll come with a tatty but protective gig bag. £185 collected from the Southampton area or £199 posted within mainland UK. If you can find one actually in stock new in the UK if will cost you £300, so I'm thinking that the price is pretty fair. cheers for looking.
