1. I think it depends on the djs/producers of the programmes. I've had two tracks played fairly recently here in Wales. He's very much on the button and his show is all about new content and nearly all of it is Welsh. He actively seeks music on the uploader and discourages anyone sending physical copies.
When I worked for bbc I did volunteer my services as a listener for the radio 1 uploader when it first started. (I dont know if it still exists). I gave up after 3 days as I couldn't give the music my attention it deserved. To my ears most of it sounded trash. I'd give it 10 secs then move on. (I'd be gutted if someone with that attitude was listening to my music!)

2. Cheers for the advice guys. Looking at the speaker, its got a blue aran sticker on it which suggests its not the original. I wonder whether this has any reason for it not working. I really am regretting buying it now. I dont own a head either and it doesn't seem to have been the wisest thing to buy a cab before I have a head! For 25 quid including a roqsolid cover just seemed so good. Going to get the speaker looked at and probably move it on!

3. so I'm back in a band and need a gigging rig. What with having two kids I've been trying to do it as cheaply as possible. So lo and behold a hiwatt ba115 cab comes up for sale on Facebook for 25 quid. Guy says he's had enough of it as it cut out during gig. The pic online looks good and to me looks not too big. I turn up and it's massive. Not Much bigger than the old swr triad I had but seems like twice the weight. Thankfully some heavy duty wheels have been put on it. I kind of regretting buying it as I'm sure it will be A pain if I ever gig and need to travel on my own but it seemed too cheap to pass on. Any recommendations for a speaker? Needs to be fairly cheap as that's the reason i bought it. I'm thinking around 300 watts. I should mention I dont have a head yet either. Im borrowing a trace elliot ah600 head from a friend but not getting on with all the dials.

I must confess, I don't actually go to my local record shops at any other time, though that's primarily because none of the ones in York cater to my taste. Back when I was spending most of my weekends in Manchester I always made a detour to Piccadilly Records and bought a fair few things.

For those asking, I was after mcluskyism and the Swans EP. The Swans EP may well turn up elsewhere and I'll keep an eye out, but I'm not optimistic about mcluskyism, it's an RSD exclusive reissue and they re-issued another mclusky album for 2012 RSD, I couldn't make it into a store and it took a couple of years to find a 2nd hand one at a reasonable price (only 1.5 times the RRP), for the few months after they were all £70+

Have a word with spillers records in cardiff. they still had mcluskyism in stock (no doubt there are extra copies in the diff- wander around enough you can probably get the falco and jack to sign it!)

5. Guitarist had a fancy tuner that you could change the tuning frequency (other than classical stuff, I've never seen anyone need to tune to anything other than concert pitch) . we started playing and his playing was even flatter than usual. He spent 40 minutes trying to sort his guitar (changed the strings, changed guitar, moved his amp - then realized he was tuning to something like 437 hz. He wouldn't believe it could be his tuner - but the stupid thing is it didnt really occur to us to check his tuner either as we'd been wowed by all his nice and shiny brand new kit.

6. Is there a link anywhere to bridge reviews or does anyone have reccomendations? I'm fancying trying a new bridge for my mex jazz bass. I had an old hamer cruise bass that had a chunky bridge that was really easy to fiddle with when setting height and intonation and the bass sounded great. I've been recording with a friend who has a stock highway one jazz bass with badass bridge that I've A-B ed and it plays and to my our ears sounds better.

My giddy ant they were hard rocking guys. My ears are still ringing. The band were great players & brilliant showmen but the piano player was something else.

I've seen James Brown twice. First time had Bootsy on bass, at East Ham Odeon in about 1970.

They came on at about 1am, it was their second show that night and that has to be one of the best gigs I ever saw.

I've seen footage of this concert recently.
Work has meant I've had to get in lots of James Brown footage (its a hard life sometimes!). there's a phenomenal concert of him from around 71 in Paris with a very young Bootsy on Bass. Pretty intense stuff.

9. I'm glad you all enjoyed it. It's been a big part of my life since last summer working on this comp.
Re: diversity, it really is a tough one. There was a stringent jury who chose purely the best 5 on the day of auditions. I'm hoping the coverage of this years comp will raise the profile of it and through this more people will audition. So if you know any young uns out there who have what it takes, get them practicing and make sure they keep an eye out for applications next year! (Applications will go live probably around April/ May)
Only 3 days left for Iplayer but all of the whole performances will be on the website forever!

10. anyone catch the young musician jazz award last week? 3 days left on Iplayer to catch up but all of the performances are on the website in full.

(sorry cant work out how to embed, the link above takes you straight to the 14 year old bassist)

11. I've been away from playing live for about 5 years now and space dictated me selling my old cab and head (SWR triad and SWR head). I've been hiring setups at the local rehearsal space and Ive had use of orange bass terrors and other heads but what I've really enjoyed playing through has been an old Peavey nitrobass head - its like I'm hearing what I've always wanted! not sure I want to buy one though as it weighs too much!

12. I watched the performance yesterday. I quite enjoyed it.
I've kind of avoided popular culture for the last few years due to having a kid and work- no radio 1, commercial radio and very little tv etc. so thought Bruno Mars and Olly Muirs were the same person!

I saw them headline Reading in 1999... although I was on mushrooms so don't remember if they were any good...
