1. Hi guys, I've been doing some work over the past few weeks for a few events with the national orchestra of wales. today, I noticed a lot of the basses have what I can only describe as a clamped on piece to the headstock which extends the e string?
Can anyone explain? When I saw it on one I assumed it was a very old bass and the neck/headstock needed help but then I noticed all of them had the same kind of device attached. google has come up with nothing!

2. I used to beat the living hell out of my bass when I was gigging. I don't think there was a gig when I didn't chuck it on the floor. I dont know what they paint mexican fenders with but there is hardly a mark on it. the only time i did any real damage was when my warwick soft case zip gave in and it smashed the strap button off and scuffed it up at the bottom.
'And you will know us by the trail of dead' were notorious for trashing their kit. I asked the drummer from mogwai if he'd ever leant them stuff on tour- he did but it didnt stop them from trying to trash it! one of their album dvd extras shows their tour manager pleading with them to not do any more damage as they couldn't afford to go on, alas they carried on the same. saw them at reading a few times, the last time was in the radio 1 tent, they trashed a load of the kit and threw all the drums and hardware and pedals into the crowd. cue the security rushing in to get it all back as it was all hired!

3. I've always wanted an EB2. I got into a bit of a bidding war for a 60's rivoli a few years back on ebay but pulled out as the price seemed to be getting a bit crazy. alas it would probably be considered cheap these days. The rivoli reissues pop up now and again on ebay,I can't say I've ever seen and eb2 or rivoli for sale on this site though. I did consider the jack cassidy bass but it's something about the lower horn on it which i dont like.
I'd love to try one of the warwick star basses out

4. I bought a cheap one off ebay a few years ago. chinese made and new for about 70 quid (think it was godman branded). I put up a review a few years back on the old bassworld site. sounded fine for just practice, not the nicest thing I've played, too twangy for my tastes but never plugged it in really. I did have fun with the harmonics on it. I bought one so that I would practice more... cant say I did anymore on it and kept going back to my electric- for the money it was a good buy but alas I sold it on as it was taking up too much space.
I tried out an epiphone el capitan a couple of years ago- that was very nice although I have a feeling its a different model to the current ones

5. Very intriguing! I'd love to have a go. I've had a little project where I've been intending to finish a little collection of songs into an EP which I was going to call the People's Key-P. Essentially all the songs are in the key of E played on a guitar tuned EBEEBE. Perhaps a bass with 4 E strings would be the catalyst to finish it!
Going to check out the buffalo springfield book, still haven't finished the krautrock book I've been reading since christmas though

6. cheers for the replies people!

Much more like a VI with the whammy bar. Plus they seem to get a lot of great reviews.
yeah I've seen them and have been close to buying one it's just I wish there was a british seller so I could try one out!
I've 'acquired' an old Strat copy that I'm in the process of building a 30" scale, six string bass neck for. I'll post up a build diary once I get going and if it works well I might make a few more if anyone's interested. I couldn't believe how much Bass VIs are going for these days, even the Fender Japan versions are fetching mega-bucks.

Here's a link to a big list of short scale 6 strings: Bass VIs

MusicMan make a six string Bass Silhouette too although I've never seen one in the flesh.
I look forward to your build threads as always!
Hi Stu - these Danos look pretty good, but I'd check one out in the flesh - the only thing that I'm not sure about is the bridge being non-adjustable for intonation, as it's a block of rosewood stuck on a tremolo arm. Might be fine though - if you get one, tell us what it's like...

Cheers,

B.
If it was about 80 quid cheaper I think I'd take a risk so I'm going to let this go. Here's to Mr Henry Norton with his build, maybe I can pass some money his way for one!

7. hey peeps,
what's peoples thoughts on this? I've always wanted a bass vi but alas they are way out of my budget.
I'm quite tempted by it

8.
I thought audioslave were good! Most people seem to hate them. I must say i do think superunknown was a great album, don't know if anything they've released subsequently was quite as good though.
I'd reccomend getting into their earlier stuff!
We used to call Audioslave Rage against the garden. Far more memorable.
I quite liked that cochise song but thought the rest of the first album was a bit weak. never heard their other stuff, I just prefer soundgarden and rage as separate entities.

9. Gutted. Such a friendly man. We've exchanged a few pms over the last few months and he'd invited me to pop in if I was ever east of the taff. All my love and best wishes to his family and friends.

10. I've never bought a bad bass but then again haven't bought many.
I've mentioned this bass on a few occasions but when I started playing I had a BC rich white thing for about a year. It was a bit like Duffs from guns and roses. Played horribly added with not being able /willing to get it set up. I have to say it helped me get my hands up to strength though as I was gigging within a month of playing the thing.
I've played a few basses that I've been very disapointed with. I passed on a ricky 4003 for 450 quid about 8 years ago as it played like a pig.
Tried a Marcus Miller Jazz in town about a month or two ago. I thought it looked great. I couldn't get on with the pup and bridge cover so had a go without them and I really didn't find anything nice tonally about it.

11.
Hi
yes it's basically an EHX Russian Green Muff clone with mods to select between different resistors and to add Gain and bypass the tone control that has a big mid hump.
fantastic! are they readily available?
