1. I can vouch for the RS 2x10 and 2x12 TC cabs they sound monstrous, they both fit in the boot of my mondeo and I can carry with one hand, not sure on power handling they are 400watt and 300watt respectivly so I guess a 1000watt head may push them a bit too much?
2. Just as side point - some of this should be down to the "promoter", venue or whoever is organising the gig. I find too often them putting too many bands on one tiny stage with far differing styles of music so all you get is football crowds coming to see their "team" and then leaving. Surely they would make more money on the door and at the bar if some thought went into the night, themes, music releases, visuals etc.. there are other ways to make money without pillaging every poor band that plays. Having two or three, good like for like bands on is better than mashing four or five together just to rake in some cash. For the record, these days I shy away from these types of gigs, I'm sure I'm not the only one and that's kind of sad in a way, not doing a gig because you know its going to be organised poorly, but it does happen all too often and I remember its not always been like that! Sorry I have gone a bit off topic!
3. Some great stories that I can relate too! I noticed the thread went into Drumming a bit which reminded me in my old band we once shared drum shells and the other band tuned the tomms downs! our drummer nearly did a Michael Douglas in Falling Down and shot everyone on sight! I like the idea of taking a DI box for those who dont pre-arrange to use backline!. Intresting thought on sharing guitar cabs as it happens often on multi band nights. I never throught about the Ohms loading, I'll remind our guitarists to check before using next time. I think you can damage amps in other ways than by physical means, you can bust valves through not using the standby properly etc..I dont have a valve amp at the moment but something did not like it when that kid cranked my input up to 11 and although it was prob more to do with the PA and the festival equipment it still interrupted the show while they got things up and running again, this prob could of been avoided. Finally we all just need to get mother fudding world famous then you wont need to share the backline with anyone and you pay people to move it around for you! Living the dream. Cheers!
4. Agreed, thanks guys - I think I'm going to become more strict in this area! Also I know a couple of bass players who are good friends and no problems in letting them use my gear; they understand how to use it and they wont abuse it. Cheers!
5. Often when one shares a gig with other bands its also a good idea to share some equipment, makes allot of sense to me as it saves on space, quicker change overs etc.. The first thing is always drums and you get something like this "The drum shells will be provided just bring your own breakables" The next is always the bass amp, now this is a mixed bag, bring your own, one will be provided or can we all use yours (say if your headlining). I have always tried to be relaxed in this area and make life as easy as possible, I'm happy to use other bass amps or happy to let people use mine, however a couple of recent experiences is making me re-think this approach - one kid recently used my amp and decided to crank the input gain right up which in turn killed everything PA, amps, electricity, everything, it all shut down. I was mortified thinking he had broke my amp but it turned out to be a safeguard and the generator cut out (Thankfully!) . This and a couple of other experiences where people are just not looking after other peoples stuff is making me change my mind and say "no you use your own gear.", I dont want to do this and come across like a grump tho! Thought it would be good to hear other peoples thoughts and experiences in this area PS one thing I dont like is when bands turn up expecting to use your backline, that annoys me, contact and ask - manners cost nothing! PPS I also have recently insured my gear! Cheers!
6. Dont worry too much about the VU meter, it's just a show thing really, just ensure the input levels are not turned to 11! The amp must be damaged if you getting less headroom through a lower range 180w EB compared to a mid range 575w Evo 2. I would get it checked out or take a look yourself as Mr Foxen says For the record I believe ashdowns are good amps, I and fellow bass player friends have always got a good sound out of them. Cheers.
7. Above all have enjoy it and have fun, it will be over quickly, touring is amazing! I agree tho lots of great advice for you on here. Finally, work hard, get some of ya own space, be organised (take lots of spare gear, leads, strings etc..) and try n get some sleep, sometimes! You will argue, push buttons etc but that's healthy sometimes, just know when to back down (Sounds like a blummin marriage doesn't it!) Have a good one!
8. Just a quick think out loud here, anyone else notice the price of soundblox pedals have shot up? These used to be about £170? http://www.thomann.de/gb/source_audio_soundblox_multiwave_pro_bass.htm Must be a hike in demand or something Cheers
9. I can recall a couple of bobby no name basses I played over the years, they were pretty bad. A nice story once was I was helping out at a gig and a band turned up but the bass player was coming later. I stepped in and sound checked for the guy (he was using my amp anyway) I took the bass out of the case and I cannot remember what it was but it was set up poorly with strings from the 1800s and it sounded bad (prob could of been ok with a little TLC). So when the guy turned up I lent him my 90S EB music man, I made a bit of a joke of it and said "I'm not letting you use that!", the guy was only a kid and he was stoked. Mikey.
10. Anyone tried an Ashdown with the neo speakers? It will rip your head off and you can just keep turning it up without compromising sound quality. I get the different taste thing tho, I love my new TC electronics amp but I know some dont get on with them as they prefer a more old skool sound. Mikey.
11. Couple of house bass amps where I used to rehearse, one was an old 100w Peavey combo, all of the buttons had been ripped off by the 100s of people who had battered the poor thing and it sounded terrible. I have played through a couple of other Peavey amps since and I cannot get on with the sound of them, that's personal preference though. There was an old Truker head through a HH cab and that sounded like somebody farting down microphone! Somebody replaced the "TR" in Trucker and replaced it with an "F"! I'll leave that to your imagination! I'm surprised to hear the bad press about Ashdown. I used to be endorsed by them and played through many of there amps, always got a good sound out of them, the NEO cabs are amazing! I never played some of the really old ones tho. Many thanks.
12. I would agree Amepeg SVT CL is up there, the V4B as well and the drop heads, old skool! I think Ampeg could be the daddy as well (From a mass production perspecctive) a quick wikki says they were founded in 1949, although there maybe someone who can beat that!. Fender bassman should get a shout, they have been making bass amps since the 50s. I played through a 4x10 100watt all valve combo once, not sure of age but it looked blummin old, sounded amazing, got very hot though!! I used to have a Trace Elliot VA400 all valve head (I think it's in Poland now!) That sounded amazing but the head was heavier than the 4x10 cab!!!! It had 6 kt88 valves for the power stage, it was monstrous, evil and ripped your head off, I think the design was based around a SVT CL. TC Elec RH750 but then I would say that as I have one! Cheers.Just having a think about TC, I think they deserve recognition for the Bass 2.0 concept and pushing bass amplification forwards. Their amps are designed around the bass player in mind and all of the features are really useful not to mention portability for the "Working Man" musician, PS I'm not on commission !
13. Nice amp, - exactly the same thing has happened on my RH750 mute button, one can e-mail TC and they will send out replacements
14.
He runs sound on some gigs (Ben plays sax too)
Funky Docters?
15. I like the sound of those "filthy" tunings! lol! Small world - I would be intrested to hear how you know Dewi Paul!
16. Hello - Pls take a look at our new Music Vid, Standby. Would love to hear your thoughts www.youtube.com/roughtwist Many thanks! Base!
17. I just wanted to start a thread to get thoughts and opinions on different tuning. We mainly play standard E, Eb to help the saxes and Drop D (Dadgad!) A new fave one of mine is Eb but with a drop D so C#, man the bass sound massive when I hit that C#! The tenor sax player said to me the other day "You filthy ba$%^$D!" lol! The other I want to try but not had chance yet, Drop C (Am a bit Kyuss and QOTSA fan!) I think these are fairly basic and I know there are many more out there so would be good to share experiences Cheers Base.
18. I have recently been playing with the settings more, we have started to write a new tune and I pumped the tube tone right up to 11 with no compression, lots of bass and treble and a bit of mid, hey presto through a fender Jazz I got that queens of the stone age ampeg valve/growl sound, its monstrous!
