That approach works for me. I have taken a few lessons in person, but I've learnt a lot by myself with books/videos.

She is not the kind who thrives on self-teaching. She really wants a human, live, in person, to teach her.

    Fair comment best of luck

  2. Just a suggestion why not try youtube, there's tons of theory, songs tuition ect….I went for 3 lessons many years ago with a Jazz Bassist and found it a tad boring....I learnt more from books ect, then youtube there is so much on there....Mark Smith is very good easy to follow tabbed out stuff.

  3. I have a Pancho Tomaselli signature ESP PT-4 Jazz Bass (Black) swamp ash body, maple neck/fretboard with beautiful block inlays, emg x pups, gotoh hardware....lovely playing Bass but just a tad to much of a Rock look to it for my personal preference....fancied something different when I bought it, but would prefer a traditional Jazz or Precision to be honest, but a fabulous Bass.

  4. I didn't start playing Bass until I was in my 40s was originally a Frontman/Singer but fancied learning an instrument so opted to play Bass after hearing James Jamerson I was hooked on his busy but melodic playing and phrasing spent hours trying to emulate his style over the years although I will never be as good I have now developed a style that I feel captures him in my own way, without doubt my Bass hero amongst a few others of that era and genre, but Jamerson will always be the one who made me think I want to learn Bass.

Thanks Bob, glad you like the lesson.

Good suggestion to cover some Rhythm n Blues.  Were you meaning British Rhythm n Blues in particular? Any suggestions of artists you would like to see in that lesson?

    Cheers Greg

    Hi Greg,
More American 60's RnB/Soul think James Jamerson, Tommy Cogbill, Jerry Jemmott, Willie Weeks, Duck Dunn ect, will leave the choice up to you, there's so much out there but to me the above represent that classic Motown, Soul and RnB era.

  6. Some nice lines there Greg, good choice, The thrill is gone and Black magic woman were some of the first lines I learnt...I have modified the thrill is gone to a slightly more funkier line over the years and actually forgotten the original line so it will be good to re-cap and re-learn it lol....keep 'em coming.
Some good Rhythm n Blues lessons would be nice....Cheers Bob.

Well I’m sorry to be the bringer of bad news, I really am but Jeff didn’t die from double pneumonia, he had that because well, first of all if you didn’t know, Jeff had been going to the methadone clinic for many years, every day. Around 2014 he wound up in rehab. I don’t know exactly when but after quitting the methadone clinic he relapsed on heroin. Well that’s what actually caught up to him cause Jeff died of a heroin overdose probably due to all the fentanyl out there & probably after being a return user, people typically can’t adjust that well & it kills them. I tried to warn some of his friends out there back in 2013 but they wanted to help Jeff cover up the truth of what was really happening, I guess to keep his career from getting tarnished. & Jeff did a very good job of hiding everything from the bass community. Well as you can see now that wasn’t a very good idea cause now Jeff is dead.  Sorry guys.

    R.I.P. Jeff

Real shame he was such a gifted Bassist

Gutted for you pal but this was headed for a “save the last bullet for yourself scenario”.

Out of interest why is it so hard for you to get other muso’s.  I don’t know Darlington but I know it’s inhabited?

    Annoyed For You of Wigan

    Hi Les,
It's North East Lincolnshire I live in Grimsby....unfortunately all the old school musos are either retired or in there last bands...not many decent or committed musicians about to be honest....used to be great in 70s/80s but it's not so good nowadays sadly.

  9. Thanks again everyone....it seems according to the Guitarist that i'm the one at Fault as I take it too seriously, I have been in and out of bands since '79....played in first gigging band in 81....either has mainly singer/frontman and a few bands as bassist so getting on nearly 40 years played 100s of gigs in about 8 or 9 bands.
But apparently i'm to serious and intense oh well....sounds bigheaded but there loss.

Been practising with an old band I used to be with we re-formed in June this year....3 original members including myself (Vocals/Frontman), things have been going ok, slow but getting there about 16 songs off, I have started booking gigs for next year after everyone was in agreement.
One downside our Guitarist and Drummer are in another band (same band) which obviously we took into consideration, I got us some gigs booked into new year....great....then out the blue the Guitarist who has just retired messaged me saying book gigs but we might have to cancel if they clash with my holidays....I replied no can't do that start cancelling gigs you soon get a bad name give me your holiday dates hopefully they won't clash....by the way they was all ok with dates when given originally.....trouble is he can't give me any holiday dates until next year and some of the dates I have already booked might clash so we might have to cancel.
I wasn't happy so I messaged all members saying i will not book any future gigs until I know everyone's availability and holiday dates....I have messaged venues to cancel the few gigs lined up and apologised luckily given plenty of notice.
Never had this problem years ago when we was originally together but since his retirement the commitments gone, he does very little to promote or help the band and often makes mistakes at rehearsal.
Am I unfair as I told him straight that it's just not on to agree to gigs but if his family want to swan off on hols I have to cancel gigs...not a chance.
Before you say get another Guitarist it's virtually impossible....but it's put a real dampener on things.

Well to complicate the situation even more our Bassist as now jumped on the bandwagon and dropped another bombshell saying he agrees with the Guitarist and will be taking a family holiday and also a motorbike tour of Europe next year but can't give any dates and doesn't see any harm in cancelling gigs....so looks like the beginning of the end for us.....my enthusiasm to carry on is waring very thin.
I have no problem with folks taking holidays as long as I know dates and can work round them....but no way will I book gigs and cancel them.

I’m having issues with my guitarist. Joined last Nov as he wants to gig etc. Away with his wife almost 3 weekends out of 4 every month over the past 6 months. Just keeps booking weekends away. Not flexible at all, and yet keeps asking when the gigs are coming in. Ive turned down 7 since June because he isn’t available and it’s really hard to get motivation to try and get gigs knowing I’ll probably have to turn them down.

Now I know it’s not the same thing, if we had a gig he would hopefully honour it, and I’m not going to book anything where he says he isn’t free, but he randomly adds these weekends to the Callander and must realise it doesn’t leave us much room to gig.

That's bad must be so frustrating

Nah , he is the villain. No one on here is begrudging the lad his retirement and good luck to him but this is not workable in any way shape or form.

There's obviously some "only guitarist in the village" thing going on as the OP says it's practically impossible to get another guitarist (so that scuppers the 'get a dep when required') so we'll have to accept that's the situation but that's got to be the only reason this lad can ever think he's going to be in a band again.

He may be great and have  had an illustrious career in what ever size pond he's been swimming in but It's a racing certainty that he's NEVER been the one putting the gigs in for a band or he wouldn't think for a second his terms are acceptable.

@Newfoundfreedom you had the goal posts moved so you left your band and quite rightly as it wasn't what you agreed to in the beginning. If you read the OP you'll see that he had the goal posts moved after the start  too.

He's right to be miffed as you obviously were.

    Les

Thankyou.....been trying hard to keep things amicable between myself and the Guitarist trying to make him see my point of view regarding booking gigs and honouring them....but I think he's spat his dummy out and barely replied to my messages.

You are so right, the frontman in our "Feelgood" band definitely has a larger than life personality, whenever people start videoing us on their phones, he closes in on them and sings straight into the lens, he wanders around with his wireless mic, sometimes goes behind the bar or even out in the street.

    Here's an example:

Excellent....deffo got the swagger sounds great all of you.
