With all this lock down malarkey, it's got me thinking. Could I live with just one bass? I currently have 5 and recently I have been trying to convince myself I only need one.

Has anyone managed to cull a collection down to just one bass?

    I've just the one

In the lesson I give you techniques to help play and create your own Walking Bass Lines for Shuffle Blues.

There is also a Backing Track For practicing and a bit of Blues history.

This is suitable for anyone wishing to start playing walking bass over 12-Bar Blues.

    Nice one Greg.

Had a quick look, and what can you do - it's a bunch of well-known decent songwriters in a randomish order. Good for a light read, can't be taken too seriously.

But I have no problem with Dylan being number 1.

I agree (well to a lesser extent!) with fretmeister- Lennon and Mcartney are pioneers, but let's not that let us over estimate their abilities.

Dylan was a lyrical genious in his early years

I played one of these in a local music shop and man, it was so nice to play.....   it was fun too.

I’m thinking about starting my fretless journey with the red version of this......

Personally I fancy a Fretless but think i'd go with the Vintage Icon Fretless just like the look of them....if one comes up at the right price could be tempted.

I wasn't even aware of this company but for the price, the spec looks amazing!

Would love to have a go on one of these basses soon.

    UK company also?

Bought one a year or so ago can't complain at the price but took scratch plate off and as so often with cheap instruments hides a multitude of sins.....great big routing for the neck p/u.....put me off straight away....but for summat cheap and cheerful I suppose you could do worse.

    Hello,

I want to start learning online and after watching several websites I found that the style of Mark from TalkingBass video lessons suit me. What I would like to understand is the difference between a Paid 10 lessons Course like the $29.99  "Beginner Bass Guitar" and the same free lessons covering the same subjects from the "Free lessons Map"

Anybody here with an idea about it?

    Thank you very much

Not sure but I dare say the paid content would be more in-depth, I have a couple of Marks courses Simple Steps to Walking Bass and Chord Tone Essentials but found they clash in content, but never the less they have some useful information in both.
The course you mention won't break the bank and i'm sure you will get plenty out of it, good luck.

From bassplayer magazine. Thought this looked really interesting, particularly with the included clip from each - I'm going to be enjoying working through the list during lock down.

Here's the link in case of interest to anyone else:

Have they missed anyone off the list that you would include?

Jamerson at No1 that'll do for me

Yep I remember that from my lessons! But thank you nonetheless I really appreciate the help I get from people like yourself.

Thought so Stew I am just dabbling with Theory as I haven't gigged in years and got to the point of either packing up or just going right back to basics...I always avoided theory in the past it looked so daunting but it's made a big difference and actually quite interesting, still just scratching the surface but knowing a bit can only benefit you in the long run all the best.

One of the areas of transcription I'm still weak on is adding chords. It has been suggested it's a useful addition to a score, and I have to agree. Knowing at a glance I'm moving between say, Gm C and F gives that little boost to my knowledge of which notes I am likely to be playing.

However, as confident as I am in finding the notes in any bassline, establishing, with that same confidence, which chords are being played isn't easy.

Here's what I do at the moment.

    1) guess the key sig. Learned a trick to do this by ear but also by how many sharps (or should they be flats?) occur with great frequency.

    2) assume I have the correct key (a leap of faith in itself) and I can establish the chords in that key - so broadly speaking I've narrowed it down.

    3) look for triads.

    4) hope for the best.

How is it done by those who don't have to guess (I have no piano or guitars to try the chords with)?

Don't know if this helps and forgive me if you already know but say for instance it's the Key of C Major the chords will be...
    C Major
    D Minor
    E Minor
    F Major
    G Major
    A Minor
    B Diminished

The above will apply to any Major Key.

  10. A good way of remembering the Cycle of Fourths is
    C F (Bb Eb Ab Db Gb) (B E A D G)

Try to remember C F and the word BEAD G that's how I simplified it worked for me then play single notes in the cycle, then some simple triads it makes sense believe me, good luck
