I use Rotosound swing bass 66 and have for years. When I got my new bass about 6 months back I tried a load of different strings but eventually ended up going back to the Rotosounds!

I doubt the audience would notice a bad sound (unless its really sh*t) but they do notice when it sounds good! Maybe this is because if the band feels the sound is good they tend to play better! IMO

Power lead should be easy enough to come by. If it only needs a clean then you've probably done ok (as long as it all works!) Its just a shame that he obviously couldn't be bothered to give it a clean before sending it out!
