Reading this I went and double checked my Vintera 70's tele bass.

I never noticed any issues with the tone or volume pots on mine. Not as responsive as a split - P for sure, but I get what I would expect in variations in volume/tone using the knobs. It's a fairly dark pickup for sure, but has  a mellow bite when fully open.

    Hope you get yours sorted.

I'm a big fan of these Mexican basses. I have four now :) A flea, Player plus, the 70's Tele and just picked up the Vintera ii 60's P. I can't knock any of them for craftsmanship, fit and finish. In some cases better than some American versions.

I have had to do my own tweaks to get them how I like them, basic stuff, truss rod, string height and intonation, but after that I have been happy with them.

People complain about the high prices on these and I agree somewhat, but hasn't everything sky-rocketed in price lately?

I still think you get a good bass for your money in these middle tier Mexican range.

In terms of build quality, I have no issues at all with mine. The first one I had was returned due to a dent in the finish under the top coat, but this one is fine build-wise. I'll probably open it up and re-wire it at some point, but I suppose my main issue is that I don't know what it's supposed to sound like to begin with as I'm not that familiar with the pickup. I've watched a few YouTube vids and in some there's a clear difference between the tone at 0% and 100%, similar to a P Bass, but I've seen a couple where the sound isn't hugely different. The volume pot is definitely a duffer, but I can live with it for now.

I find the tone knob does weird things (or naff all) when playing at low levels or with headphone amp on most basses.  I thought it was just me.

I probably wouldn't have questioned it but I can hear the difference in my P Basses very clearly. I didn't wonder if it was perhaps a duff pot as the volume control in the Telebass is garbage; once you turn it down to about 8, it's off completely.

  4. I've updated the thread title rather than create a new thread as the issue seems to be wiring related, rather than the pickup itself.

This might be a daft question as I've got one of the Fender Vintera Telecaster Basses, but I'm a bit perplexed by the Wide Range Humbucker in the neck. The tone control doesn't work in the same way as a P Bass does where turning it down rolls off the top end; rolling it from 0 to 100% seems to provide different voicings to the pickup but the difference is quite subtle. It could be because I'm usually playing at low levels at home, or my ears are a bit duff.

Perhaps that's just how they sound, but I'm struggling to find much information on them and how they're wired. I was expecting a big boomy sound with the tone turned right the way down.

  5. Without pictures it's hard to say, but IIRC every Fender (and Squier) produced in '96 had a 50th anniversary sticker on the back of the headstock. Chances are it's just a standard production P Bass of the time, rather than something specific produced for the 50th anniversary.

    Not a bass (obviously) but:

My first electric instrument was a Jazzmaster that I got in 1984.  Nobody was buying them then so it was dirt cheap.  A few years later, I unscrewed the neck and found out it was dated 15 June 68, three weeks from my date of birth.

I still have it.  I didn't know this was a thing until I read this thread!

You've had an instrument for 40 years? I thought you were supposed to sell them on every two to three years. That's how it works, right?

  7. I only really play precisions, or precision-style basses, and they're all much of a muchness really. I don't think one made in 1987 (my YOB) would be much different to the ones I've currently got; 1982, 2011, 2023, and one put together from various parts.

Until you need cash or space. If you don’t need either, then keep them because you never know when you might fall in love with them again.

This is probably the correct answer. Unless you're absolutely certain that you don't want or need it, and you can afford to do so, hang onto it. I've got one for sale at the moment that I only had a day before putting it up in the Marketplace. I didn't really want it in the first place but I won an eBay auction that I didn't expect to, and I felt it would have been a dick move on my part to not pay for it, so I know I won't look back in regret if it goes.

These are lovely to play. I tried a few in the range when they first came out but being a lefty i prefer symmetrical basses if I'm flipping them upside down. Did borrow one with flats for recording a couple times. 😎

It's a nice bass but I already have a butterscotch one and I don't really need two of them. In honesty, it was an eBay purchase that I didn't expect to win!

No doubt you are aware but these have a thinner front to back profile than a typical precision; I'm a jazz neck man and I find these very comfortable.

I sold mine because I also didn't get on with the neck profile; I like a beefy neck, so it was too slim for me. They're great quality though, and I used it for recording and it sounded great. You'd be hard pressed to find a better bass for the money.

In the old days of Basschat , there were a few rude comments made about peoples gear that was being sold . Thankfully the mods sorted that out , and Basschat is a good place to sell stuff .
I do feel for you, but times are very tough due to cost of living etc and I hope things improve for you .

Have you tried eBay ? I think that if you started out at a lower price  say £77 for example , and see what gives .

Regarding farcebook , hardly used it so ditched it . It was on Basschat many moons ago, that I heard about the negative issues about selling on it so I never listed anything . Ignore the negative comments , and don't take them to heart. The " people" on there  don't know you , and they probably have posted similar comments on other peoples posts just to amuse theirselves .

Even eBay has it's idiots. I've got a guitar up for sale and received an offer yesterday that I deemed too low, so I made a counter offer that was about midway between their offer and my listed price. The buyer declined it and added a message that basically amounted to "I can buy an entirely different guitar brand new for less".

  12. Fender Precision Bass ashtrays for bridge and pickup. Both are genuine Fender parts; I had the bags with the labels for them about somewhere and I'm sure I've seen them recently but I did have a purge of all the empty parts bags that were taking up space in my spares box so they've possibly been binned. In very good condition, I fitted them to my P but found they got in the way of my "technique" so took them off and had them in the pocket of my gig bag.

  13. Price: £300

Squier Classic Vibe 50s Precision Bass in Lake Placid Blue. Made in China in 2008; one of the original run. I bought this recently but I don't need it.

I've done some work in tidying it up as there were a few things that needed doing; most of the mismatched screws have been replaced with proper pickguard screws, the tuners were quite hazy so have been cleaned as best I can, the bridge was disassembled, cleaned, and oiled and is fully working though some rust and pitting remains. I've added some push-on flat top knobs, a spare neck plate, and a rosewood finger rest and given it a polish to remove the gunk that was on there.

There are a few dings around the body but the neck is in good shape. A couple of jobs that need attending to are the rust on the pickup pole pieces and a loose jack socket cup that I'll try and look at over the next day or two. It comes with both bridge and pickup ashtrays and includes a basic rectangular hardcase that is in good nick. I have a box so postage is available, or it can be tried out and picked up in Glasgow.

Agreed but when I play with my thumb (like Sting) the La Bellas really do dig in more. I play both basses very similarly. The tension on the Mustang flats is a lot less but when I play the same string on one of my P bass, again no problem.

I have my hofner tuned half a step down for this weekends gig, but still I feel it's going to be a bit sore

Funny, I've always found Fender flats to be very high tension and inflexible, and thought La Bellas were the opposite
