  1. Fender Precision Bass ashtrays for bridge and pickup. Both are genuine Fender parts; I had the bags with the labels for them about somewhere and I'm sure I've seen them recently but I did have a purge of all the empty parts bags that were taking up space in my spares box so they've possibly been binned. In very good condition, I fitted them to my P but found they got in the way of my "technique" so took them off and had them in the pocket of my gig bag.

  2. Korg DT-10 pedal tuner for spares/repair. It works intermittently but I think it's just the snap connector for the battery that needs replacing. I had a go at re-soldering the connections and it worked again for a while but I've since bought a TU-2 so I don't need this anymore. Yours for the cost of P&P if you want to have a go at fixing it.

  3. Price: £300

Squier Classic Vibe 50s Precision Bass in Lake Placid Blue. Made in China in 2008; one of the original run. I bought this recently but I don't need it.

I've done some work in tidying it up as there were a few things that needed doing; most of the mismatched screws have been replaced with proper pickguard screws, the tuners were quite hazy so have been cleaned as best I can, the bridge was disassembled, cleaned, and oiled and is fully working though some rust and pitting remains. I've added some push-on flat top knobs, a spare neck plate, and a rosewood finger rest and given it a polish to remove the gunk that was on there.

There are a few dings around the body but the neck is in good shape. A couple of jobs that need attending to are the rust on the pickup pole pieces and a loose jack socket cup that I'll try and look at over the next day or two. It comes with both bridge and pickup ashtrays and includes a basic rectangular hardcase that is in good nick. I have a box so postage is available, or it can be tried out and picked up in Glasgow.

Agreed but when I play with my thumb (like Sting) the La Bellas really do dig in more. I play both basses very similarly. The tension on the Mustang flats is a lot less but when I play the same string on one of my P bass, again no problem.

I have my hofner tuned half a step down for this weekends gig, but still I feel it's going to be a bit sore

Funny, I've always found Fender flats to be very high tension and inflexible, and thought La Bellas were the opposite

I've gone at least one year without buying or selling any instruments, which is an achievement in itself, but since the beginning of the year I feel I've been again thinking that I should change my gear and suddenly my playing with improve (or something like that)

A few years ago I bought a 71P on this forum. It's been serving me very well, but I keep wondering, with prices going up, if we're now at a point where I should just move it on.

Thinking that I should also have a less valuable instrument to drag around rehearsal and live venues, I then bought a Sandberg VS4 (again here) about a year ago. Very comfortable neck, perhaps a touch too trebly for my taste.

What else would one want from a P! Well... enter 2024, suddenly I'm thinking I should really sell both and get a 60s specs P, and of course there happens to be a custom shop in Sherwood green on sale :/

When I test the water with my wife she just tells me it looks just like what I have already, and probably she's right. Some part of me thinks if I do start buying and selling again I'll end up regretting both losing the vintage instrument and the very comfortable Sandberg neck, while on the other hand I have this little voice in my head saying it's a great idea and I could just have one P instead of 2. What I definitely don't want is end up with 3

I know I'm not alone out there, so is there a way out of the circle of GAS?? How do you guys stop tinkering and just focus on improving your playing (and not your gear)?

The part in bold is irrelevant, given that feel and sound are the two most important factors in buying an instrument. My OH thinks all my basses look the same, even though they're different shapes and colours.

  6. For a while it was just me and my JV Precision. It was a bit knackered when I got it so I'd restored it and it was definitely a keeper (famous last words). Soon enough though, I had ideas on a P build and once that was done, the JV was usurped by the new one and relegated to it's case. The bitsa was then overtaken by a new and shiny Telecaster Bass for a month or so, and then a Squier CV 50s Precision appeared at my door and now that's the only one that gets picked up, and it cost a fraction of the others. Three smashing basses, all sitting in gig bags under beds.

  7. Price drop to £275.

Squier Classic Vibe 60s Stratocaster in Lake Placid Blue with matching headstock. 2013 model, made in China with rosewood fingerboard (not Indian Laurel). I've only had this a week but I'm not gelling with it. It's in excellent condition for it's age, barely a mark on it. I've replaced the pickup covers, backplate, and knobs with Fender parchment ones as the originals had gone very yellow. I have a switch tip as well but it doesn't fit. It came with a trem arm but the threads on it are quite chewed so it's not really of any use. Restrung with D'Addario NYXL 10-46s.

  8. As I've had a couple of queries, here are some potential (very specific) trade/PX options (cash either way):

    - Squier Matt Freeman Precision

    - Squier Classic Vibe 50s Precision - White Blonde (original Made in China version)

    - Fender Vintera Telecaster Bass - white

    - Fender MIJ 51/55 P - would especially be interested in a pink paisley or blue flower one.

If I think of anything else I'll add it to the list

  9. I had a CV (rather than VM) Bass VI. I found the spacing much too narrow at the nut, but I switched the bridge to a Staytrem and didn't have any issues with the trem or intonation. I really liked the sound of it with La Bella flats on it, but I really struggled to get on with it.

  10. @ead my newly-acquired luggage scale says the weight is 4.23kg, or 9lb 5oz. 2 of my other basses are 4kg or under which probably explains why this one feels heavier (because it is), but I was surprised to find that my Telebass is heavier, even though it doesn't feel it to me. Maybe it's to do with the distribution of the weight as the Telebass has a smaller headstock and lighter tuners.

Could you expand on "not lightweight" please.  How heavy is the bass?

I'll sort out some proper scales and get an accurate weight, but using my not-so-accurate measurements, it's about 5kg. To be honest, I never really thought much of it until I got a bass that's a good bit lighter, so in comparison it feels much heavier than what I'm used to.

I had one of those a few years back and to my surprise it had a quarter sawn neck! Does yours have one as well?

I had to Google exactly what a quarter sawn neck was as I've seen it referred to but never really knew what it meant, but it seems like it is. The grain runs vertically/slightly in the diagonal when I look at the end of the headstock and heel

  13. I had two basses delivered about a month apart recently. Both times the boxes were freezing cold but there was zero chance I was waiting 24 hours to open them. Both were whipped out of their packaging as quickly as I could and even though they were both cold to the touch and took a while to come up to a normal temperature, neither of them had any issues with the finish
