I was going to have a shot of that one at lunchtime today but wasn't able to make it over. If it's still there on Tuesday when I'm next in the office I'll have a swatch.

I tried one today; unfortunately not the charcoal as it had been sold, but they had fiesta red in stock. Nice build quality, great sound, but the matte finish on the neck is not for me.

Guy, I’ll make it worse. It was the one in GG Glasgow that I tired!

If it's a copy of a 60's bass it'll be a glossed neck, but the nitro finish neck gloss that everyone seems to hate will probably be mostly missing as it was on my RW Flea Jazz. I'm lucky to not get sweaty hands, so it's never bothered me.

I like gloss necks. I hate it when necks have a satin or sanded-back finish. The more poly, the better.

  4. Spotted this on Instagram this morning. The Charcoal Frost looks great, but I'd want to check out the neck on it. I know everyone was a big fan of the original road worn models from 10 or years ago but I had the 50s precision neck on a build and I really didn't get on with the finish on the back.

I watched Anthony's video the other week. They're undoubtedly good value, and great basses if you want to play in a 60's/early 70's outfit.

Nice to see they've fixed the awful bright yellow "vintage" neck tinting they were doing a few years ago, too.

They still do that tint but it's on the Indonesian ones. These are Chinese, like the original classic vibes, though the serial points to it being a different factory.

I'll definitely check these out. I'm a big fan of the original CVs and I really like my Vintera Tele Bass so I'd be interested to see what the Squiers are like.

Were not some of the ‘80’s Squier Ps 32”scale?

Yes, I believe they did a series of these in the E-serial period (1984-1987). I've always wanted one. I once found one local to me. I made an offer and the seller accepted, but between all emails he got about the bass he lost mine and he sold it to someone else. I found out from their NBD thread on a Dutch forum :dash1:

Those 1980s MIJ Fenders and Squiers are fantastic. I have little experience with the basses, but a 1985 E-series Squier Strat has been my number one for many years. Best €175 I ever spent.

There were medium scale JVs as well:

How does that type of Fender pickup compare to a Gibson mudbucker?

I played a 70’s SG bass in Wye Fret a couple of weeks ago and now I want a mudbucker bass!

I've got a Vintera Telecaster Bass and it's a hard pickup to define. It's not overly muddy, certainly has more focus to it than my old EB-3, but it's not as articulate as a P Bass. It drives my amp with very little effort. "Built for power, not for speed" is how I saw them described once.

I've got a white Matt Freeman Squier precision with Seymour Duncan upgrade that I'm looking to move on for about £350 in a hardcase.

Excellent condition, hardly gigged, non-smoker etc etc etc

Bargain. I've had four of them over the years, one was my main gigging bass for years. I bought one at the end of last year but I've gotten used to lighter basses and rounder radiuses in the intervening years so could really gel with it unfortunately.

  9. I'm looking at something with a Pau Ferro fingerboard but I've never tried one before. The colour of the wood notwithstanding (I find it to often be too light and streaky for my taste but the one I'm looking at is quite dark and even), what's the grain and texture like compared to the traditional rosewood? I've tried instruments with Indian Laurel fretboards before and really didn't like it; it felt very dry even when it had been recently oiled and had a very open grain that you could comfortably stick a fingernail into.

You've piqued my interest - solid colour or trans refin? Picture?

It was a black poly finish to match the body of my Squier Bass VI.

One day ill have the cash and my JV will be refinished in Sherwood Green by Dave Wilson.

Dave's done three basses for me (and one headstock). Thoroughly recommended.
