1. A combination of all 3 work best. What we tend to do is email first, then ring (to see if the land lord is in) and then actually visit the pub. It might be a bit of a pain in the arse, but its worth it - we only really go out to new venues now - we put the hard work in for the first couple of years, and now we get repeat business. One tip - if you "cold visit" a pub - make sure the landlord (or whoever) is in BEFORE you order a drink - you dont want to commit yourself to drinking a lonely pint if the landlord isnt - if he (or she) is in, then order your pint. One thing to remember is not to give up. We tried to get in with a pub once for 3 years (we had been bad mouthed by another band) - eventually we got in thru a friend of a friend that recommended us to the pubs landlord. We played our first gig there, and was offered NYE - and 5 gigs a year there, so it was worth all the effort. Most of the time you dont really need a demo either - just a good sense of humour and a good price. You could always try "supporting" another covers band to try and get in at notoriously difficult places - again, we've had to do that a few times. Just dont give up.
2. I cant do this, but ive always been interested - the band i am in turned down a stint on a cruise ship when we first started. However - everyone refers to "ship life" - surely you just wake up, have breakfast, maybe learn a song/rehearse, gig, and go to bed - am i wrong?

5. I auditioned as a bassist for a band once that "used to be sh*t hot, and were reforming - minus original bass player". I had been playing for about 6 years at the time and been in a few bands and knew most of the songs. Thought id show off.. I turned up with my full rig to this rehearsal studio (at the time i had a 2x10, 1x15 and 300w trace head, as well as a couple of basses and all my effects) I waited in the room and set up whilst they were coming in - I saw a couple of small unnamed practice amps on the floor, and they got their squiers out and we "blasted" through a few of the songs and something just werent right. I asked everyone during the break what their highlights were, big gigs etc - whilst the "lead" guitarist was going more and more red. Turned out that the drummer had only had about 3 lessons and had been playing for about a month. The singer was "good at karaoke", other guitarist hadnt played in front of a crowd before, and the other guitarist (that asked me along) had been in a band and played one half set of covers at a mates party once. I promptly packed up and left.

12. no, not much at all - just the constant rising cost of petrol, insurance, tax and MOT's and then who pays for anything to be fixed if it goes wrong? Your better off making contacts with a van hire place and getting a parent to drive it.
13. Well, following on from this, ive setup a spreadsheet that details EVERYTHING i have to spend as day to day - strings, accessories, insurance, publicity, rehearsal, and then ive got gig spend - food, drinks (both alco and non alco), distance from home to studio to pub back to studio and back home - at 45p per mile as per hmrc business rates. Then a total received minus total spent and a +/- and so far (since April 2012) - ive made a profit of £4.34. I cant do it since we started (2006) cos ive not got records.
14. Its a covers band - there are no leaders really. We book gigs together, and split all the dough equally - i provide insurance and publicity
15. So, one thing ive learnt is to keep a note and receipt for everything. Now - do i just do this for the earnings I receive, or totally for the band; IE - Gig at X pub = band gets paid £200. Out of that £200, we all get £40 (£200/5) Do i just record MY expenses, and leave it to the rest of the band to do their own?
16. All seems to echo what i pretty much thought..keep it coming though!
17. My thoughts exactly! Ive considered doing things like keeping Petrol receipts, and receipts for strings, straps, picks etc just to prove that its for expenses and not additional income. I play maybe once/twice a month for money
18. Hello, A lot of venues we are playing at the minute are asking for us to sign receipts for tax purposes. This hasnt happened to us before. What are the implications of not declaring the £50 odd quid a night I make from gigging to the tax man? Do I/We Need to? The £50 odd quid barely covers costs, let alone provides an additional income. Thoughts please!
19. For Sale; Trace Elliot AH 150 SMC Bass Head - Carpet covered monster - have had this for about 3 years now and its been a faithful servant to me and never let me down. Its sat on top of my 1153 matching carpet covered cab - again, good condition, slight bit of rusting on the plate at the back but nothing too serious, its not corroding and the inputs work fine - speaker still sounds great. Pics available to anyone that wants em. No trades - collection/delivery around Leicestershire only - £300.
20. Hi - selling on behalf of a friend, so no trades; Hartke HA3500 Bass amp head - Offers welcomed around £200 Bought brand new about 12 years ago, so this has been gigged a LOT. Currently being "used" as a spare. The power amp has been fixed previously but it's fully working. These amp heads were prone to developing broken solder joints due to the robotic soldering in the korean factory. It has a bi-polar power stage so it gets quite hot which is why you should always check that the fans work on these amps. Mine has been fixed for a while now and its all working as it should be. It has a few scratches and rack rash to the chassis but the front panel is in good condition. All led's, sliders and knobs are present and working. Comes with rack ears but at the moment it has all the trim/corners/handles etc fitted. Ive noticed one of the rubber feet has gone missing but if you plan to mount it in a 2U rackcase this wont be an issue. A cheap and cheerful but very powerful amp. Its a good first amp for gigging with and I doubt there are many venues where it wouldnt be loud enough. Trace Elliot 1153 15" 400 watts RMS 8ohm Bass Cab (Unbadged) - Offers around £250 Says it all really.
