1. Just been watching some IOW festival stuff on the TV and it appears that the bassist from Kasabian is using a capo. What's all that about, then? I thought it was only our skinny string brethren who needed stuff like that.
2.
... and I was just wondering how many of us have actually FULLY succumbed to G.A.S and just leapt in and bought our dream instrument perhaps before we've 'earned' it? (I'm not sure I put any stock in the concept of 'I'm not good enough to play this/that yet)
I have. When I was 19 years old, on a very low wage, I went to a guitar shop to buy a £50 guitar. This after much thought, premeditation, etc - at the time I couldn't play guitar, but I wanted to learn. Too late: they sold the last one, but allowed me to console myself by playing some of the more expensive stock. A few hours later I walked out of the shop with a £200 second-hand Fylde, and a 2-year finance deal for £10 a month. At the time this was about 10% of my wages. 30 years later, I've still got that guitar. It's one of my prized possessions and I still play it every week, if not every day. In fact I think I'll go and have a burst on it now. It's a very different world now though. I can't believe the amount of debt that today's students are taking on. If it had been like that I'd certainly never have gone to university, and i guess neither would warwickhunt! The shop BTW was Sounds Acoustic in Chester Rd Manchester, next door to Muir Music. Some of the old-timers from the North-West might remember. Muir Music was the Burman stockist, but that's another story for another day!
3.
That's an average of 48 hrs/pw over a 17 week period (or the period of employment if less than 17 weeks) Which is something you can opt out of if you want.
I stand corrected. Thank you. Not sure why I thought it was 4 weeks, maybe I was talking to someone who had negotiated a different reference period. However, if he's 16 years old he can't work more than 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week. I don't understand why so many people don't seem to be able to grasp this basic fact!
4.
Sorry to be a killjoy but i'm just wondering if it is legal for a 16 year old to work 9 hrs a day 6 days a week?
You're right. According to http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/YoungPeople/Wo...twork/DG_066272 assuming that the OP has left school, at 16 he's limited to working 8 hours a day, max 40 hours a week. It's also in breach of the European Directive on Working Time, which limits you to an average 48 hour week over a period of 4 weeks. GreeneKing, how come you're being paid less than 5 quid an hour when the UK minimum wage for workers over 22 is £5.35 ?
5. Gentlemen, thank you for your excellent advice which I intend to take. I'll leave it as it is for now. Sticking a 10" in it would require building a new front panel, which I'll consider if the original driver gives up the ghost.
6.
It's not, and stop calling me Shirley.
Sorry ;-) I thought it couldn't be that simple. At this point, I'll probably have to own up to wanting to do something that is frowned upon, if not beyond the pale. I have an old HH Bass Baby 15" cab, which is very well made, nice and compact if I didn't want to carry bigger and heavier cabs, but only rated at 100W. It goes against the grain to accidently damage the driver by shoving too much power through it, and I was thinking about putting a more highly rated driver into it. The cab is sealed and the volume is about 45l, probably way too small for a 15" driver by Bill's reckoning . But it doesn't sound too bad at low volumes with the existing unbranded driver. The sensible thing is probably to get rid of it, but I don't imagine it's worth a lot and I've grown rather fond of it over the years.
7.
Vas represents the equivalent volume of air to have the same spring compliance as the woofer. Basically the higher the Vas, the larger the cab needs to be to get full bass response (i.e. resonant frequency of speaker in cabinet equal to resonant frequency of speaker in free air).
Welcome back Alex, what would we do without you? Thank you for that explanation, which even a numpty like me can grok. According to Eminence's web site: Deltalite II 2515 - Vas 204 litres Recommended enclosure sealed: 42.5 - 48 litres Basslite C2515 Vas 260 litres Recommended enclosure sealed: 45 - 82 litres ! Hmm. Something doesn't seem to add up here. Finally I'm beginning to understand what Bill means when he says that designs don't specify big enough cabinets for the driver parameters. So in order to get the optimum bass response, you need a cabinet volume equivalent to the VAS ? It can't be that simple, surely.
8.
The Basslite Vas is very large and makes the driver one of the least desireable of the Eminence neo line. The Deltalite II 2515 and Kappalite 3015 are far superior.
Thanks Bill, I'd like to ask what the significance of the Vas is, but I'm not sure I'd understand the answer! The Delta Lites are easier to get hold of, but are 8 Ohm rather than 4 Ohm which is what I would have preferred. As far as importing it goes, Eminence UK were actually quite helpful, happy to have Eminence US stick one on the next shipment provided I went through one of the dealers, their suggestion being blue aran. usspeakers.com sell the basslite for $99 , plus $66 shipping, 3.9% tax, 17.5% vat, handling fee, it's starting to get expensive! What a great country we live in.
9. The Eminence Basslite C2515 seems just about ideal for a small reconing project that I have in mind. 300W 4 Ohms and very light weight. http://www.eminence.com/guitar_speaker_det...mp;SUB_CAT_ID=5 The only problem is that Eminence UK don't import them, and it's hard to find any reviews or information other than what is on the Eminence web site. I'll talk to Blue Aran about importing one, and I could import one myself. In the meantime, does anyone know anything about this range of drivers?
10.
I can see that it was a HUGE mistake to join this forum.
Well, one of the nice things about this forum are all the new features, specifically the 'Ignore posters' feature.
11. In the interests of balanced reporting ... I'm not going to comment on the cabs, but I'd avoid the amps like the plague. My son bought one (despite me telling him not to!) and I'm less than impressed. It is incredibly noisy (loud hiss, not mains hum) and unbelievably cheaply made - pots soldered straight on to the PCB, etc. He was lifting it out of the car one day and just snagged one of the tone controls, and the knob flew off, having sheared the pot shaft clean off. This time we got lucky with superglue, but these things are so fragile that they shouldn't be taken out of the house.
12. Count the number of turns and divide it by the length of the threaded portion of the screw. If it's a very small diameter screw with a fine thread, an overhead projector sometimes comes in handy to blow up the picture. If you can measure the external diameter, you can usually also work out the minor diameter (the diameter of the root of the thread). With OD, minor diameter and pitch it should be possible for anyone who knows about screw threads to identify the thread.
13.
Very true. 4 string basses could probably get away with it, but in the modern age of 5 and more string basses, older style valve amps just won't cut it.
Um. My Burman guitar combo has exactly the same transformers as my Burman bass head, and they both definitly cut it when it comes to 5 string basses. Generalise at your own risk. As far as Mr. Torres is concerned, I have nothing but praise for him. I had a long and interesting chat (well , for me it was interesting) with him at the London Guitar Show . DBA, I think you're fortunate to work with him.
14. WinISD it is! Thank you folks. I tried using the basstalk search function and came up empty-handed. Maybe I made a smelling pisstake! Do people still check their PMs on basstalk?
15. One of the people who doesn't seem to have found his way here from basstalk is alexclaber . That's a damn shame, not least because I'm trying to find the software which models cabinet performance for various driver dimensions. Alex posted about this on more than one occasion. I've been looking for the posts on basstalk but I can't find anything useful. Can anyone else point me in the right direction?
16. You need to have a chat with that nice Mr. Torres!
17. Has anyone here come across the new EA Micro 300 ? With the current exchange rate, I'm very tempted. http://www.urbbob.com/ea_heads.html#micro300 This amp doesn't have the same tone shaping system that the iAmp 200/350/500/800 use. Do any EA users want to comment on how useful that system is?
18. Colin Hodgkinson. There's a tab tutor with a CD called 'Bassmaster', you can get it on-line from the Bass Centre http://www.basscentre.com/
19. If you don't get any joy in Naarge, Paul Glazebrook in Kesgrave near Ipswich is a dead whizz with amps and doesn't charge nearly enough. He revalved both my Burmans and I can certainly recommend him.
20. It's definitely good news for my accordion! Imagine getting out the old squeezebox for a crafty practise a couple of days after a gig and having stale ciggy fumes blasted out of the bellows.
21.
I know it's just a name, but if it had been me , I'd have expanded on the bassworld idea and registered www.bassplanet.co.uk, which is currently available.
Great minds think alike, Bassbloke! I also looked up basstastic, but that appears to be given over to some bizarre pastime involving drowning worms on the end of a bit of string!

Octave Pedle

I have the EBS one and I'm very happy with it. Recommend you try one out first though.
23. Further to the thread in the General Bass Discussion forum, I note that both the 'Off Topic' forum and this forum 'Site Issues and News' do not appear unless you are logged in to the site. If you just browse to the site without logging in, you only see three forums in the first group instead of five. Is this deliberate?
