1. Welcome MandShef! Nice to have another Sheffield-er on here too!

I envy your DB skills (recent convert to upright things but nowhere near classical abilities - I pootle along with shuffle/blues/folk type stuff)

Wow. You could buy one of these instead:

http://www.ebay.co.u...8#ht_674wt_1270

.... and they're made of real wood.... (they are fab by the way)

Yep, I had a rosewood one and it was superb!

Welcome to Basschat! Not sure how to call you - if you're female it's a bit strange to call you Bernard :)

Welcome!

Melchett: It appears he wishes to marry a girl called Bob.
Queenie: It is a very odd name for a girl, isn't it? Girls are normally called Elizabeth or Mary.
Nursie: And Donald...
Queenie: Mouth is open Nursie, should be shut.
Nursie: Thing is true, sweet one. I had three sisters and they were called Donald, Eric and Basil.
Queenie: Then why is your name Nursie?
Nursie: That ain't my real name.
Queenie: Isn't it?
Nursie: No.
Queenie: No, what is your real name then?
Nursie: Bernard.
Queenie: Suits you, actually.

4. Ricky and I agreed a trade very easily and with great comms throughout, the cash adjustment was smoothly done and instant and my new toy arrived this morning (next day!).

A top gent! I only hope he likes his new toy too!

Andy, just to add to the discussion, you're in Sheffield? You're practically in throwing distance of Shuker. Not that you should base your decision solely on that, but it may help!

I think generally everyone will have their personal preference and for me, other luthiers may or may not have put me off a custom with them in the past for one reason or another . I'm delighted with my basses and would recommend them way over and above basses twice the price, that are mere pretenders to the throne. ;0) ;0)

Anyway, I hope you get a chance to play as many basses by different luthiers as possible as well as going to see the companies in person to meet and discuss your dream bass. Most luthiers should be able to show you examples of their work and give you an opportunity to test some. If i were nearer, i'd be happy to let you take a look at my customs.

Good luck!

Thanks matey, I know I'm really near John, his body shapes don't quite tickle me the way ACG do, doesn't mean I wouldn't prefer them to play over an ACG as have never met either! He's even a friend of a friend so I really should pop over for a chat!

I reckon your basses would scare me as I can't get on with more than 5 strings (neck too wide or strings too close together!), I would be interested in trying any through neck Shuker 5's that are local?

Thanks for the kind words. It is not me who is ill but I need to see how the current situation pans out before committing to further order both for my sake and the customer. I hope to have a better idea of when new orders will be on the cards again by the end of July. However as stated on the website I am more than happy to talk about new builds and put together quotes.

Alan,

Hope all gets sorted very soon for you!

7. Thanks all for your input and shared wisdom!

I do really like the look of the ACG which is a definate starting point, I'm in no position to place an order anytime soon but am beginning to formulate ideas about what I'd like...

The Letts basses look really nicely done but somehow don't cause that flicker of desire in me

I did try a Sei in the gallery and thought it lovely furniture but not really my cup of tea...

Does anyone around Sheffield have a Shuker thru Neck Deluxe + 5 or an ACG Recurve 5 that I could try?

8. I'm beginning to seriously consider having a bass built for me by a UK builder, I really like the look (and sound) of some of the custom jobbies that I've seen around here, I like Shuker and I love the look of ACG, I could get much the same sort of thing from either but it's difficult to know who to approach if you've never met any of their work in person...

I daresay there are folks on here who've had experience of the build process; communications; build quality; playability; sound quality; value for money etc from each of the many UK builders out there...I've listed the 3 that came quickly to mind...my current favourite would be ACG but I've never met one so can only go on the pictures and enthusiasm folks have for them...

opinions please...(removes lid from worms can and walks away...)

I have a Markbass one which velcros around your cab handle then around your bass/guitar neck (it doesn't vecro to you cab) - if that's what you mean... I always forget to take it with me though. :D

yeah that one, I haven't got one but I've seen them and thought they looked cool, not much use if they're always left at home though...back to square one on the op then!
