  1. I really like the look / idea of that Catalinbread SFT! Will check it out on youtube tonight, I'm looking for something to give a little bit of valvey grind without being really gnarly (a bit like the bass sound at the start of chelsea dagger if that makes sense)...

The Lomenzo is absolutely superb sounding but does way more than I need, I'd rather have something that just does the job I want 'really well' so I'm using it in its' sweet spot rather than tickling a pedal that can do loads more than I'm asking it to

Tried tweaking the EQ centre of the mid pot ? (But now I can't remember if it was possible or it was pickup output you van change !)

Indeed you can alter the eq centre of the mid pot, haven't tried that yet on mine, I think it's default is 600Hz (you can set it to 275Hz / 600Hz / 900Hz / 1100Hz)

  3. Hiya matey,
I have a 55-02 and get plenty of top end through my genz shuttle 9 and epi 112 cabs...a few questions spring to mind...
    What strings do you use?
    How old are they?
    What amp setup and eq?
Have you got lots of pedals?
Does your signal chain start/end with a buffered pedal?

Another thing to think about is if you're gonna be switch back and forth between those two comps is a sneaky we A/B box to easily switch on the fly without tap dancing or simple choosing the TC with presets.

Keep us posted on how you get on :)

Thanks matey! Loads to consider here...

In the meantime I've agreed a trade -my ebs for an aguilar tlc- which will give me a bit more control in general...and something new to try

So, Fender USA pickups in the Vintage... a very marked difference!
Before it had a nice enough sound, even if not very "Jazzy". Now it's clearly a Jazz. I was surprised it made so much difference. It sounds a bit "woody". It reminds me of a roadworn Jazz a friend of mine has. Do they have the same type of oickups?
The strings are pretty old, over a year I'm told, but it still sounded pretty good tonight at rehearsal.
I will play with this on the gig on Friday :)

Ah, the age old 'electronics make more difference than the wood' adage strikes again!

  6. BigRedX that vibracell looks amazing, what a great concept!

I've had four MM rays, two 4 strings a 5 and a fretless 5, all good, the ray5 stayed with me as my main bass for a good while but ultimately they had to go, the 4's weren't thick enough sounding and I always wanted more from the 5's...

I've bought/traded/sold maybe 30 basses in the last 20 years and don't regret saying goodbye to any, they all felt/sounded good when I got them but their time was done and my needs had changed.

I like my Lakland 55-02 and it does what I need just now, that may change if the music I play changes again...if only I could have (and had room to store) about 10 basses!

My gorgeous sounding and playing '61 p-bass copy is getting the least airtime so might have to go purely for space reasons which is the wrong reason to sell I think!

    Joe Meek Floor Q
    Markbass Compressore

Thanks for the superb answer 51mon, will have a proper look at the Joe meek as it runs on normal power rather than a 12v supply like the markbass so will more easily slot into my setup...
