1. Is this bloke serious or taking the pi##?? Either way, he need's shooting lol Jesus save me....
2.
After I joined a band one time the drummer kept going on about the previous bass player. Lazy, bad ear, poor technique, 'flashy' gear, unreliable and a 'totat twat to work with' (the drummer's words). The band even had to pull out of a gig while they were sound-checking when the drummer stood on the guy's bass lead and they'd had a massive row. Yes, it was his brother he was talking about.
I can't say my brother had anything bad about my playing, it was just about general band stuff.. I also had someone stand on my lead in a gig, we managed to fix it with beer mats and duct tape lol
There you go! I love it when that happens. Or in my case, if it happens.
Yeah me too, I walked in feeling like the under dog, and they couldn't praise me enough :-) very happy :-D
3.
Well done mate - go for it! It sounds like your bro-based band is in a very deep rut, so have fun with something new, but don't burn any bridges.
I've left on good terms and I think they wouldn't hesitate if I said I wanted to play with them again. This new band is in a different league, plus it's more the kind of music I want to play, and it's original too.. Can't wait to start laying down my own baselines :-D
4. Quick update on the audition I had tonight.. In their words "I blew them away" Now that's a decent enough comment to inspire me :-)
5. Thanks for all the great advice fellow BCers, sorry for slow reply, been learning tracks for the audition, it's tomorrow so I've not had much notice lol on a down side I broke the battery terminal on my main bass changing the battery.. Looks like a busy day tomorrow fixing my bass and playing with settings for tracks :-) This has given me the enthusiasm back That I needed, just hope it works out for the best :-D
6. Well, I just had a message for an audition for an originals band, I think this could be something to to get my teeth into :-) so I'm going to try out for them with a back up plan of starting another band or finding another band if it doesn't work out :-)
7. I've been in a band with my brother since I started playing bass about eight years ago. It was my first band and that was the reason for me picking up a bass.. For the past year or more, I lost the inspiration to pick up my bass outside of band practice every tuesday, the main reason being we ended up going round in circles, drop tracks, and then end up playing them anyway, we'd make lists of new covers to learn, but I was the only person that ended up learning them, then we never done them anyway and it all became very frustrating. Then there's the usual band brother arguments and it seems to of ended up that I can't make any constructive criticism in the band with out it ending with us falling out.. This has happened again in the past couple of weeks, except this time I've left the band.. Now I'm struggling to inspire myself to pick it up again and debating selling my gear and giving up. BUT it almost feels like I'm cutting my arm off, it's become a big part of me I really don't want to loose.. One option I thought of, is sell it, and buy different gear? Another option is start a better band? Join an existing band is another option? Or just give up and keep the money in the bank... Just thought I'd put this out there and see if anyone has been through the same, what did you do to recreate the spark and passion? Sorry if I'm wittering on :-)
8. Greetings JX.. If you like your bass deep and want to downtune, try using bigger strings :-)
9. That's a lovely looking Rick. I'm yet to try one..
10.
It's not as bigas you might think. They made them pretty compact. Can get that, my head and my guitarists ac30 in the back of my fiesta!
Me and lead guitarist fitted my 410 cab, a marshall 412 cab, a flight case with his head, plus my amp, guitars and 2 basses plus other bits, all in the back of a Corsa lol Only thing was we had to take his wheels his cab lol
11. My brother turned up with a HH combo 115 tonight. Was in great condition, will take it to my next practice and see what its like.. Looks like its 100w so i'll see how it copes.. Anyone else had one of these????
12. I got a GK MBX 410 and tha copes well with the 2 marshall half stacks and a loud drummer.. They do sound good for the money, plus with 212 cab it'll be more flexable.. I think that option has potential..
13. Well I take it to practice next week and see how it copes.. Not too worried about doing anything to it for the minute.. It works fine at the moment plus I could connect my other cab if I need to.
14.
The one with the scoop bin and the VS head? I think everyone ends up ditching the cab and using the head as a standalone.
Yeah thats the one, pretty good nick too, I did try and post a pic.. I'll post it when i'm on my laptop
15. So my brother has not long left after dropping off this combo as an early xmas present.. All I know is its 100w solid state amp and he bought it for £10 :-) I've wired it up and the only thing is the handle rattles It made it sound like the speaker until I took the handle off!! So, has anyone owned one or used one in the past.. I don't see there very often!! :-)
16. Right, i was having a discussion the other day with someone and they suggested that i should start learning how to read music.. Ok, i mainly play in covers bands, but is reading music actually useful?? I thought i'd put this to everyone on BC.. Is it worth me learning how to read music, will it be beneficial to what i do? Will this give me a better understanding of time signatures and timing? I mainly play rock, thinking of getting into a bit of funk too.. Will this help me develop as a player? I can read tab... Any help or advice will be appreciated Thanks
17. Well, it's certainly given me more of a reason to try something different anyway
18. Yeah i think i will, he's definitely going places!!
19. I'd have to agree with you there, kinda makes you jealous to think he's that good after 6 years though!
20. So i was going to start a thread about the bassist in Incubus and thought it's someone who doesn't get much attention, So on my little surfing trip on youtube i found this lad who i think is brilliant, i think he's sweedish and been playing 6 years. Comments below.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D45OMeDlALA
21. one of my bands play two of them amd the other band plays one.. I really don't understand why i'm in two cover bands lol
22.
I'll avoid anyone called The Dangleberries then!!!
You got to have a sense of humour to call yourself a dangleberry!! Plus, its worth going to see them once! It would be funny to go see how deluded they really are, not only that if their over confident an rubbish thats even funnier!! Got to be worth it just the once!!
23. I went to an audition just over a week ago, although they never said they were gig ready. I was given their set the night before and they could play every song on the list! I was very impressed, and they like my bass playing! It's bad they asked you for money on a audition! Good that learned a whole bunch of songs at short notice! Keep up the work!
24. I was given a set list of 24 last saturday and asked to try and learn as many as i could in one evening for a sunday audition :-\ (luckily it was only a 2 hours) Like everyone else has said, listen to the song and get the structure down and pick out the root notes, download the tabs as a reference. Personally i pick the root notes and add in my own fills for variation. If its a well know bass line i'd use the tab to get it close to the original. Another good point of reference is youtube, get some ideas from other people, and ifs its a cr*p video its a good moral boost ;-) Good luck and happy playing
25.
why cant you kick him out? if someone isn't pulling their weight, they are out of the band, best friend, family, or anyone. it might seem harsh, but i wont waste my time with anyone who isn't willing to put the effort in. it isn't an easy thing to do either. but needs must sometimes.
As much as i would like to, its his band so i cant really kick him out, plus he would never forgive for doing that and would more than likely create a family fued as everyone else would take his side and not see it from my perspective. In saying that i did have an audition for another band tonight, the drummer is fantastic, no egos anywhere to be seen, managed to do 10+ songs in their set list in 2 hours! Got another practice wednesday! I think i found a decent drummer!!
