  1. Long day yesterday. A corporate function (belated staff Christmas party) in Somerset. Big crowd, nice stage, we were well looked after all day.

Only problem was poor onstage sound and the organisers (who controlled the FOH level) while happy to have the DJ shaking the walls, had the band so quiet we could hear people chatting on the dance floor 🤷🏻‍♂️

    For me it's a

    Tuner

Compressor (Based on MXR Dyna Comp)

    Frequency Split @ 200Hz

    High goes through

    Octave (Based on OC-2)

    Distortion (Based on Dude pedal)

then joins the Low and both enter

    Reverb for some 'room simulation'

All of the above run on a MOD Dwarf audio processor (https://mod.audio/dwarf/), as does an MP3 audio player for our drum backing tracks.  I'm starting to build a plugin that aims to behave like a Beat Buddy to drive a cajon generator to replace the backing tracks.

I've also a Morningstar MC6 MkII and a small expression pedal to MIDI the hell out of the system.

It all sounds sweet running into a TE Elf -> PJB C4.

I've recently acquired an amp head that has direct input to the power amp which is very neutral, so I am starting to play with some neural models of different amps/cabs on the Dwarf.

    Sweet!

Awesome! pretty good explanation to be honest  Do you not find any low end or "weight" lost when it's on?

Nope. I follow it with a Harmonic Booster and set the tone there

I can't decide whether I prefer mine on or off!  One minute it's an always on sweetener, the next I'm using it as an occasional drive.  What do you feel it adds, Stew?  Seeing someone else say what I think I hear may help sway me either way!

I've always wanted that 60s / early 70s bass sound which is compressed but still fat, a little broken or overdriven but kind of organically so. Like the limitations of character of the older equipment made it rather than through effects.

    This has got me close

  5. Just sound checked on a rather nice sized stage.

The JPTR sounds righteous. The missing link in my sound. Top diode engaged, compressor before it, gain about 11 o'clock.

    Gorgeous.

With the clipping stages on or off?
    how’s yours @TbirdnTalman?

I've tried each of the clipping stages, they change so much with the gain I need to get it at volume in context to really decide.

Without them I don't really hear much happening

    Cheers, bud.

Thansk for the help with the plethora.  Ive got it pretty dialled in now as far as operation.

Stil need to figure out how to control the C4 and the plethora simultaneously with the DMC. I know there's a way!

    Good luck with that 😂

My midi skills never really got off the ground

  8. JPTR Jive arrived this morning after a long ride from Germany.

First impressions are all very positive.

It may be what I've been searching for. Certainly sounds like a bass straight into the desk of an old reel to reel tape recorder.

Live test will come on Thursday.

  9. Standard January pub gig last night. Improvement on the previous visit to this venue, but still quite quiet.

The germs are running me and the singer a bit ragged right now, but we got through.

Used a tidy little rig which I do like.

I've heard lots of tales of companies holding their Christmas parties in January, often just because of lack of availability of venues (i.e. everyone argued about who was going to organise it long enough to not be able to book anywhere before Christmas), but a Wednesday definitely seems like an odd one even though the reasons are sound.

My guess is they lose the least revenue on a Wednesday afternoon in January. Bearing in mind at least three of their venues were closed to facilitate the event.

    Either way I'm happy

  11. Yesterday was a strange one:

    A gig on a Wednesday.

A gig on a Wednesday in January.

A Christmas party gig on a Wednesday in January.

A well paid Christmas party gig on a Wednesday in January.

An afternoon, well paid Christmas party gig on a Wednesday in January.

A pub chain closed its doors to the public and bussed its staff from other locations around the country to their Birmingham venue. So in essence, a staff party for bar staff and management who are too busy over the Christmas and New Year's holidays to do it then.

Went really well apart from the weird matinée vibe of working in the afternoon.

Well, that is some notable achievement, @stewblack, especially for NYE. How depressing.

But I'm guessing it's the pub management team that has the serious issues that need looking at here, nothing to do with the band whatsoever.

    It was extremely depressing.

  13. Had one of those Basschat service station meetings with Tom (A303 for anyone who's counting) and he is a thoroughly nice chap.

Pain free transaction throughout, I'm more than happy to recommend this most excellent Basschatter.

  14. Bandeoke residency in Bristol last night. Crazy busy, crowd right in the mood, only played Valerie three times as well which was a bonus.

I really enjoy these gigs. The barrier between audience and performers is totally broken down.

You know that guy ? The one at every gig who comes up and yells 'play Wonderwall'? Well instead of shaking your head and saying sorry mate it's not on the set list and continuing with your prog ska interpretation of My White Bicycle to the understandable derision of the crowd, you just say yes mate, of course, get up here and sing it with us. People feel invested, part of the evening, and we have no clue what we'll be asked to play (except Valerie of course) which keeps us fresh.

  15. I've had a busy December gigging with various bands and accompanied by a disgusting cold.

Last night we were in a very odd, labarinthine place made up of many small nooks and booths on at least four different levels. We were crammed into a rather pleasant but tiny corner and I ended up sat like a Jackanory narrator in a luxurious armchair.

It was heaven. So exhausted from my germ ridden life on the road I got to recline and play in comfort.

Also my ears were in perfect proximity to the bass cabs so I could hear just how good it sounded.

I used the Demon FX D7K Ultra as a preamp and played my Reverend Triad bass on the middle pickup.

    It was glorious.
