This is my exact irrational GAS problem right now. I bought a cheap Fallout and quite like it, but remain unconvinced that short scale is for me at all…. And yet I’m having real trouble with this, despite it being (a) really expensive and (b) an 11 month wait to get one.

Heavy bass? What's that? -> comfortable straps!
dmckee replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I’ve moved away from the Levys nylon ones I’d used forever in the last few years. Old age I guess. 😞 Tried a few different ones - including his one - but I think I found it a bit stretchy. Maybe not this one, but I really didn’t like ones that had a bit of a feeling of your bass being on a thick piece of elastic. 🙂. I eventually settled on these: https://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/accessories-c2/straps-c54/mono-m80-the-betty-sharkskin-guitar-strap-black-long-47-56-p7422 No stretch, but very comfy. -

I tried Tidal for a while - great sound quality, but not as comprehensive a range as Apple Music, nor (and this is what killed it for me) did it really work at all via CarPlay. Ended up using Apple Music in the car and Tidal at home for a while. Maintaining 2 was too much bother. Cancelled Tidal.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!

I had similar thoughts with the one I got too, to be honest. 3 or 4 little things that added up to overall dissatisfaction, but I had a chat with Andertons and they offered me a £50 refund if I kept it, taking it down to £300, so I decided to keep it. Gave the neck a bit of a light sanding, polished the frets, put on some Ultralites, a set of Status flats, and I’m pretty happy with it now (other than nut probably needs replaced). Ultralites have taken the weight down to 8.7lbs and totally sorted the minor neck dive it had. -
I think Ed Friedland’s custom USA Fallout is pine. He asked for lightweight and that’s what G&L chose. So, you’ll hopefully be fine!

I have Cobalt flats on my other basses but you can’t get them in short scale, so….. to save a bit of money I’ve ordered a set of Status flats. Just waiting on them to arrive. The other ones I’d really like to try are the Labella 760s, as recommended by Ed Friedland. I had Labella white nylon tapewounds on a bass for a while. Really liked them but worried they’d be too loose for me on a short scale. -

Well, when they did weight them, they told me they all weighed 9.2lbs. Mine arrived yesterday. Not weighed it yet, but that seems about right. Enjoying it so far - it’s been a while since I had a short scale so enjoying the slight weirdness! Waiting on some flats arriving and have ordered Ultralites to reduce weight a bit and hopefully sort the mild neck dive. Here it is, next to a couple of its big brothers. 😃 -

Thanks everybody. Still rummaging…. Oddly, I just came across Status Hot Wire flats that seem to be only £18 a set. Suspiciously cheap! -

Cheers @Obrienp. Any flatwounds string recommendations? I have EB Cobalt Flats on my regular basses but they don’t have short scale. Quite like their amount of tension. Tried TIs once and they were def too floppy. Looks like Chromes, Labella Deep Talkin or maybe Dunlops? -

SO, I spoke with Andertons and they offered to weigh the 3 surf green Fallouts they have in the warehouse. All 9.2lbs. Still not light by any means, but….. have ordered one anyway! Arrives tomorrow. 😃 -

I too have G&L Fallout GAS. I wrote to Andertons to ask about weight of the surf green one they have for £349 new just now (which is a crazy good deal) but they said it was 10.2lbs!! That’s too heavy for ANY bass, never mind a short scale IMO. I’ve had a few great G&Ls over the years, but their Tributes often seen to be inordinately heavy. Shame. has anyone ever found a light-ish one? -

Lovely American Special P bass, that was converted to fretless with a thick slab of ebony by a previous owner. Finish is the ‘hand-rubbed’ nitro satin honeyburst, that I believe there was only a short run of for Guitar Center in the US. The fretless mod was done (I think) by Brook guitars in Devon (that’s from memory - could be wrong). It was done really nicely, onto the original neck, even preserving the original nut. As well as that mod, I’ve done a bunch of upgrades, to try and get it close the Tony Franklin signature fretless. It now has a Hipshot Kickass bridge, Hipshot USA Ultralite tuners, a Jazz pickup, DiMarzio DP126 pickup set (that’s the Model P and Model J - Tony has the Model J in his original I think) and Dunlop strap locks. It has the original volume and tone (tone is Greasebucket as far as I know, which I really like), plus a 3 way switch for either pickup or both - again functionally the same as the 3 way slider on the TF. All work done by Chris McIntyre here in Edinburgh, so top quality. I don’t have the weight right now - will add later - but it’s not heavy. Around 9lbs I think. I’m told the body is 1.8” thinner than a usual P, plus obviously I have the Ultralites on there, which also means it balances perfectly on a strap now. Good opportunity to get something very close to the Tony Franklin signature fretless P bass, for a fraction of the price, in a great finish. It has a few little marks on the body (that finish makes it a bit easier for that to happen - can do closeups for anyone interested, plus a bit of wear and 1 scratch on the scratchplate (that is what they’re for eh?) - but condition excellent other than that. Neck is immaculate. Only selling as I have a case of GAS for something else. In an ideal world I’d have both!

I do fancy trying one of these. What’s it like for weight?

Beefing up the bridge pickup on a P/J bass, open to ideas/mods etc

I have a Nordy MM4.2 in my single coil P and I have a single/parallel/series installed. It’s louder than the coil coil QP. -

Bit of a feeler this one as not sure I want to sell….. I’d been chasing one of these basses for ages and finally found a second hand one (2011 I think) earlier this year. When I got it though, it needed a bit of work. The electrics weren’t working well - it was all a bit noisy and to be honest, I didn’t really like the 2 volumes, 2 tones and pickup selector switch arrangement that it came with. In conversation with my local tech (Chris McIntyre in Edinburgh), we decided that he’d replace all the wiring with a custom John East Uni-Pre, which he’s installed really neatly as you can see from the pics. (His integration of the battery into the cavity cover is brilliant). The pre-amp is flat response so it doesn’t change the core tone, but what the bass now has is master volume, master blend, bass, treble and passive tone with a push/pull on that knob to switch between active and passive. (Obviously it has all the internal config stuff that you get on a John East, like treble and bass frequency settings, pre-shape options etc). The frets also needed stoned, so Chris did that too. It plays beautifully now. Despite all this work, I’m just finding the tone a little too ‘soft’ for me. I’ve tried many times to find the perfect hollow body actually, but I’ve yet to find one that really does it for me tonally. I’ve been looking into custom pickups, but I’ve already spent quite a bit and I think I’m just realising that the hollow body sound is just not for me. In terms of condition, you’ll see there are 2 small dings on the body, one front and one back but otherwise it’s great. Lovely translucent burgundy colour. The neck is perfect. The balance of the bass is also perfect. (I did try one once that was neck heavy – this one is not). I bought it second hand for £800 and I’ve spent another £400 on it, on the pre-amp, installation and fret stone, so I’m losing money here obviously. I think they retailed at £1399 although they’re not for sale now. It comes with its own hard case (I haven’t got round to adding pics of that yet) plus I have a Warwick Starline Hollow Body gigbag that I can also sell with the bass, or I’ll do that separately if necessary. I’m sure it’ll make a lovely bass for someone, and the changes I’ve made are a genuine upgrade I think. It’s just not for me. Also, not really interested in trades, other than maybe a Fender Dimension HH that I've quite fancied trying for a while.... -
For that M2000, BD say NECK WIDTH AT NUT: 1 1/4". 😂
