I've heard that titanium drum symbols (while looking cool) don't sound very nice. But that's just on the grapevine. Surely these things are going to be uber-expensive as well?

One thing I can think of is about the market place: Each post is displayed in the order of the last action (or reply), as with all the others. It would be good to be able to order the items in a date/time posted (as well as the above system) - i.e. looking at things that went on sale yesterday above something that was on sale a week ago but is being bumped or commented on. Just a thought.

It's more session work I'm after. And I do have a very good friend down there who's got a good many contacts - she's very business savvy. I'm also going to take whatever comes, so if it's originals work, then it may work out. I'm also looking forward to being closer to the bass gallery.

I'm just getting over this problem. It's probably Tenosynovitus - the inflamation of the tendon sheath at the base of your thumb. I'm just resting it at the moment, and making damn sure I do a proper warm up when I do start playing again! I do have an older brother who's living in Clapham and working as a web developer in a nice company, so I at least have a place to start living and someone who knows about the general costs etc... I've also got a very good friend who lives near Brick Lane who's doing the singing thing. But I must mention that I'm not slagging off Yorkshire - it's a good place. Cheers for the advice everyone, I'll let you know how it gets on!

Cheers for the advice guys. I knew you'd help! It's an interesting one. I just feel that I'll be holding off something I want to do staying in Leeds- yes, it has a good music scene and plenty of musicians (very good ones too), but I think I'll just get stuck. It will be expensive and difficult, especially since we're in some kind of economic crisis (although when there's a recession, there's then a boom, hopefuly), but I feel I can make it work. It'll just be Kiwi's 110% work and commitment. Is there anyone here who has had this experience- moving to london and slowly working towards a career? But also, I'm not so naive as to think that there are [b]only[/b] opportunities in London. Also, any ideas as to where to move? I've done no research into this aspect, as I've only really started thinking about it recently.

This is a particularly difficult one for me to resolve on my own, and I thought asking the bass community for there advice and words of wisdom would be the best idea. I'm currently up in sunny Leeds, studying at the Leeds College of Music. I'm now in my third year, and graduation looms (although not after a stint of hard work). I'm undecided about whether to stay in Leeds, or move down to London. I'd be developing a bass playing career in either place, having already developed some good skills though the years, and made a good deal of friends who are doing similar things. The real question is, do I need to move to London to put myself in a place of opportunity (as well as tough competition)? Advice would be gratefully received...

I'm studying at Leeds College of Music. He teaches bass there... he's into his metal and metal jazz etc... I think he lives in bradford.

I was shown this track by my bass tutor. I have never heard any of their stuff before. He wants me to transcribe the main riff, a task not easily done, but my strength lies in transcription. I wondered if anyone wanted to try it. It'd be a good practice for anyone feeling rusty and wanting a challenge.

Hello there Double Bass aficionados! I've got a tricky problem with my NS EUB. The action on it is pretty low, something which I think needs changing. And I've read on here that to get a more effective tone, the action needs to be higher. At the moment, I seem to be getting a lot of string buzz on the open E and a little bit less on the A. It's happening on the top of the fingerboard, next to the nut. It seems to me that the nut just isn't as high as on a normal Double Bass. Any suggestions?

I'm not usually one for these types of post, and I'm not really that much of an active user on this here forum, but here goes... I've been playing electric for about 6 years and have been dabbling in the old Double for a while, but today I had my first proper lesson on Double Bass and I have to say I'm hooked! Just thought I'd let you all know.

This is a good website for rhythmic reading skills. [url="http://www.rhythmpatterns.com/"]http://www.rhythmpatterns.com/[/url] Also, if you're taking a laptop and can use a program (or if you've got a mac, a piano widget) and do some transcription of some songs without your bass. This is always invaluable. It'll force you to try and imagine what's going on in the bass line and will help to make it easier to pick up songs. Enjoy the stay!

I only just heard it'd changed, after hearing something a couple of months ago about Sound Control disappearing. I've heard it's a good bass selection now. I'm glad to hear that they've got some Clovers in there now, I've been drooling over the walnut Avenger 5 for a while. Do they have that one in stock? I'd really like to see what they're like. -

I've been told that Joseph's Well no longer exists for this reason, along with a few others. It also means that bigger venues or bands are charging big money for tickets. For example, I saw that Extreme are playing at the new Carling Academy, but the tickets were listed on one website at £70! I'm as much a fan of 80s hair metal as the next guy, but I'm not sure I could fork out that much. I'm not personally up on exactly what's going on, and how this is exactly effecting the industry, but it doesn't look very good. -
I did start reading that sentence thinking he was talking about scores, I had to read it twice. This is fascinating. The question I want to ask is does this help in any way when trying to improve one's sight reading? Surely the mention of looking too far ahead and 'overloading' the brain, among other points, could be useful pointers. Planethead, Where did you find this article? Was it in a journal?

I wish I knew as well. It sounds like a good one. I learned the bass line a while back and my Boss OS-3 couldn't handle anything below a low A, but the bass on the recording goes at least to a low F#. Although I seem to remember it sounding like he turned it off for some of the sections. Does anyone know of a pedal that can handle that kind of really low note?
